Police intensify patrol to curb cult activities (Nation)
The Lagos State Police Command said it has intensified patrols to prevent members of the Black Axe Cult group planning to hold their annual July 7 celebration from wreaking havoc.
It said the cultists had earlier been warned to steer clear of Lagos as they planned to celebrate Boogie Night in many parts of the country and beyond.
A statement by spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the command embarked on a show of force to boost public confidence and also sound a warning to cultists that security agencies the state would fish them out.
Adejobi said: “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has re-echoed his order to officers and men of the command to intensify efforts in resisting and curtailing any act of lawlessness, oppression and intimidation from any group of individuals who might want to engage in any unlawful gathering or celebration of whatever kind. Woman who allegedly poured hot water on sales lady docked (Independent)
One Mrs Rasheedat Adeleke has been arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate Court, Yaba for allegedly assaulting her 29-year-old sales lady at the Ikotun area of the State.
The defendant, Rasheedat was arraigned on a two-count charge by the Nigerian Police in response to the report by the Directorate for Citizens Rights, Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
The defendant who own Super King Supreme Store at Ayodele Ogunkoya street, Ikotun, was said to have assaulted and inflicted injuries on Miss Bukola Akinola, 29-year-old by pouring hot water on her on the 28th of May, 2021 at Moriano Close, Saint Saviour Primary School Bus-stop, Ijegun Road, Lagos.
In count one, Rashidat Adeleke and others in May 2021 at No. 15 Adebisi Awolola, Ikotun, Lagos did conspire together to commit felony contrary to section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Read more

A Yoruba traditional worshipper, who identified himself as an “Ogboni King”, has become the butt of jokes — no thanks to a trending video, showing he may have lied over his role, and that of his group, in the Yoruba nation rally of July 3, in Lagos.
The rally and the Lagos Police Command’s bid to foil it, citing grim security reports and decreeing it wouldn’t allow any protest on account of those reports, are too fresh to bear recounting. Long and short: the rally held, though not in the grand form it was conceived; and the Ogboni King took part in it — and got nabbed.
Indeed the man, who later introduced himself as “Kabiyesi Tajudeen Olanrewaju Bakare, of renowned Ogboni Abalaye, known and called all over the world as ‘Ajamajebi‘ ” — Yoruba for who fights but is without blame, for he is always on his right — negated the very ethos he claimed. Read more
Man tortured by Lagos police dies in Ogun hospital (Punch)
The family of a labourer, Livinus Onyekaba, has demanded justice for him after the police in Lagos allegedly tortured him into a coma which led to his death.
Our correspondent gathered that some policemen from the Okoko Police Station arrested Livinus on June 10, 2021, for allegedly trespassing on a property in the Ojo area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that after spending some days at the police station, 59-year-old Livinus was transferred to the police command headquarters, where he was allegedly tortured into a coma.
His daughter, Olivia, told our correspondent that he was released on bail to the family when his health deteriorated. Read more

As controversy rages over the actual age of Jumoke Oyeleke, the lady allegedly killed by police’s stray bullet in Ojota during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on Saturday, July 3, 2021, the family has kept mum over the issue.
The once boisterous Ojota home of the Oyelekes was a shadow of itself when The Guardian visited yesterday. There was eerie silence in the compound located at No. 50, Bayo Oshinowo Street, Ojota, as residents spoke in whisper.
Bayo Oshinowo Street is less than 15 minutes drive from the makeshift shop where Jumoke was killed. Apart from occasional musings from family members, a cat breastfeeding her twin kittens and a white dog moving around in the compound, the atmosphere around the street was moody. Read more
Lagos maritime union members in three-day gun battle over money (Punch)
Residents and traders in the Second Gate area of Tincan Port, along the Apapa Expressway, Lagos State, have been living in fear due to ongoing clashes between factional members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, which have left scores of people injured.
Guns, cutlasses and other weapons were reportedly freely deployed by the groups during the fight, which started last Friday.
Our correspondent, who visited the area on Monday, gathered that the warring factions were led by two members, identified simply as Tao and Kunle.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Tao, who was in charge of taking money from cargos operating outside the Second Gate area of the port, brought Kunle to assist him in the operation. Read more
Police arraign 47 Yoruba Nation activists for alleged public disturbances (Guardian)
The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned the 47 Yoruba Nation agitators, arrested last Saturday before a magistrates’ court in Yaba, Lagos.
They were arraigned for allegedly going against the law enforcement agency’s orders and caused public disturbances across the state.
It was learnt that the police had also sought an ex parte order to detain the demonstrators for another 21 days. Spokesman for the Lagos Police Command, Olumuyiwa Adejobi , could not be reached for response on the arraignment as calls and messages sent to his phone were not returned.
Meanwhile, six legal practitioners, led by a former president of the Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Olasupo Ojo, and Oladapo Kayode, have reportedly waded in to prevent further detention of the agitators. Read more
Police foil hoodlums clash in Lagos (Vanguard)
Police in Lagos State, on Monday, foiled preliminary violence in Mile 12 and Owode-Elede area of the state.
Eye witnesses’ account said the incident occurred at about 10 am around Mile 12 under the bridge when some suspected miscreants from Mile 12, Adekunle and Owode – Elede axis were noticed pursuing one another with dangerous weapons.
A trader, Madam Kolawole Aminat said the incident caused apprehension within the area as many traders hurriedly parked their wares while commuters scampered for safety.
She said people made telephone calls to their relatives to avoid the axis while vehicular activities were disrupted for some time. Read more

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babjide Sanwo-Olu has ordered immediate thorough investigation into the death of a lady allegedly killed by a stray bullet in Ojota, Lagos, during the Oodua Republic Mega Rally on Saturday, July 3, 2021.
Recall that the victim, simply identified as Jumoke Muriano Adeeko, was allegedly killed by a stray bullet when policemen fired gunshots to disperse the crowd that gathered at Gani Fawehinmi’s Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos, venue for the rally.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, who announced the order in a statement, on Sunday, said, A Coroner’s Inquest has immediately been requested in line with section 14 and 15 of the Coroners’ Systems Law, Laws of Lagos State 2015, to determine the cause and circumstances of death.

Lagos task force nabs 71 miscreants, impounds 227 motorcycles (Punch)
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has arrested 71 suspected miscreants and impounded 227 motorcycles plying prohibited routes during a raid on black spots in the Oshodi area of the state.
A statement by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Femi Moliki, said the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered the task force to rid Oshodi of traffic robbers and miscreants who harassed and dispossessed motorists and commuters of their belongings.
The statement read in part, “The agency’s team, which was led by its Chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, at dawn, raided and combed Oshodi Oke, Oshodi Underbridge, Toyota, Fatai Atere, where many ex-convicts, drug addicts and peddlers were arrested around 5am to 6am.
“Jejeloye, on reaching the agency’s headquarters in Oshodi, personally screened the suspects one after the other before releasing five of them. Read more
Court remands 3 for alleged armed robbery (Vanguard)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded three men in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly robbing two men of their phones valued at N270,000.
The defendants – Nnaemeka Udeh, 22; Obinna Onovoh, 23; and Arinze Eze, 26 – are being tried for conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and armed robbery.
Magistrate Mrs O.A. Layinka, who did not take the defendants’ plea.
Layinka directed the Police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
She adjourned the case until July 19 for DPP advice. Read more

The mother of the 14-year-old girl killed allegedly by a stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on Saturday has expressed sorrow on receiving the news of her daughter’s death.
Agitators for Yoruba self-determination had gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota amid the presence of armed policemen and soldiers.
This was after the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeen Odumosu, had addressed newsmen at the venue, where he announced that no rally is allowed in the state.
However, his announcement was defied by the agitators who flaunted their banners and chanted all sorts of slogans to express their determination towards the breakaway of the Yoruba group from Nigeria. Read more
1 dies, scores injured as hoodlums invade Lagos community (Vanguard)
One person was reported killed and scores injured on Saturday when suspected hoodlums believed to be land grabbers attacked residents of Isiu community in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The traditional ruler of Isiu, Oba Olukayode Raji, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incessant attacks on the community started since he became the king on Aug. 24, 2020.
“The hoodlums shot sporadically to disperse and scare residents who were going about their lawful duties.
“I am calling on the police IG and CP Lagos State to help restore peace and safe my community from the hands of hoodlums and landgrabbers,” the Oba said. Read more

Wife laments Lagos school proprietor’s whereabouts 28 days after N1.5m ransom payment (Punch)
The past four weeks have been traumatic for the family members of Femi Oluwadeko, the proprietor of First Trust School in Adamo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, unsure of whether their breadwinner is alive or dead.
Fifty-year-old Oluwadeko and a teacher in his school, Chioma Oladapo, were reportedly kidnapped during a visit to the former’s poultry at Salebo, Imota, around 7am on Thursday, June 3, 2021.
While Oladapo reportedly managed to escape from the kidnappers’ den, her boss’ whereabouts remained unknown even after the family paid N1.5m in ransom. The abductors were said to have initially demanded N100m.
City Round learnt that the abduction was reported at the Imota Police Division and the case was later transferred to the tactical squad at the state police command headquarters in Ikeja. Read more
Igboho’s men dare police over Lagos rally (Nation)
Agitators for Yoruba nation appear to be heading on a collision course with security agents in Lagos today.
The agitators vowed yesterday to press ahead with their rally in spite of police warning that they should desist.
Olayomi Koiki, spokesman for the embattled Yoruba youth activist and one of the prime movers of the agitation Sunday Igboho, said the rally would go ahead as planned.
Organisers of the Lagos rally and the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), also insisted on going ahead with the rally today.

Alleged killer of Super TV CEO booked apartment with fake name, Jewel (Punch)
A preliminary police report on the alleged murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, has shown that the prime suspect, Chidinma Ojukwu, used the name ‘Jewel’ to book the short let apartment on Adebowale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase I, Lagos, where Ataga was killed.
The report also indicated that several calls placed to a phone number with which 21-year-old Ojukwu booked didn’t go through after Ataga’s body was discovered in the room on Wednesday, June 16.
Ojukwu, a 300-level Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, had reportedly checked into the service apartment with Ataga to have fun.
What started as an amorous encounter however went awry under the influence of drugs as Ojukwu reportedly stabbed her lover multiple times with a knife. Read more
Yoruba Nation: 14-year-old drink seller killed by stray bullet in Lagos (Punch)
A yoghurt seller, identified simply as Jumoke, has been killed by bullets reportedly fired by a security operative dispersing Yoruba Nation agitators at Ojota, Lagos State.
Our correspondent, who sighted the girl’s corpse, observed that bullets had ripped open the victim’s stomach. She is said to be 14 years old.
She was reportedly displaying drinks at a shop when the bullet hit her.
Her body has been covered with a piece of cloth as a crowd gathered at the spot. Read more

Despite the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, agitators for an independent Yoruba nation moved their campaign to the social media platform on Saturday as many others defy police to hold a physical rally in Lagos on Saturday.
Days before, the leader of the secessionist group Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, was declared wanted by Nigeria’s secret police.
The Department of State Services also paraded 13 persons arrested at Igboho’s Ibadan home during an early morning raid on Thursday. Two persons were killed during the raid.
On Friday, police in Lagos insisted it would not allow the protest planned by Sunday Igboho’s group to hold. Lagos police boss Hakeem Odumosu said he feared the rally could degenerate into the sort of violence the state saw in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality last October. Yoruba Nation: Police deny killing 14-year-old girl, claim no shot fired (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has denied claims that a 14-year-old girl was shot and killed by the police during the Yoruba Nation rally on Saturday.
The police made this known in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, in Lagos, Olamuyiwa Adejobi, titled, ‘Re: Alleged killing of 14-year-old girl at Oodua rally in Lagos’.
The statement read, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to a news making rounds that a 14 year-old girl was hit and killed by police bullet today 3rd July, 2021 at the venue of the Oodua Republic Mega Rally in Ojota, Lagos.
“The Command hereby wishes to debunk the rumour and state categorically that it’s a calculated attempt to create confusion and fears in the minds of the good people of Lagos State and the country at large. Read more
Kidnap kingpin, Evans, to continue trial July 9 (Punch)
Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned the trial of Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, till July 9, 2021, for the continuation of defence.
Evans, along with his co-defendants, Uche Amadi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba, had previously been arraigned before Justice Oshodi on August 31, 2017, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping. The gang was alleged to have kidnapped Donatus Dunu, the Managing Director of Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
According to the prosecution, Dunu was kidnapped on Ilupeju Road, Lagos State, on February 14, 2017 and the defendants allegedly collected €223,000 as ransom from Dunu’s family. Read more
Lagos court remands boy, 13, for allegedly defiling 11-year-old girl (Punch)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Friday remanded a 13-year-old boy (name withheld) in a correctional home, for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.
The Magistrate, Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take the juvenile’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
She adjourned the case until August 17 pending legal advice from the DPP’s office.
The Prosecution Counsel, Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in March at his residence. Read more
Court remands man for alleged attempted murder (Guardian)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a 33-old-year-old man, Saheed Odusote, in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for alleged attempted murder.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take the defendant’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
She adjourned the case until Aug. 25, for DPP’s advice.
The defendant, who resides at Iju, Lagos State, is being tried for conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful group and attempted murder.
The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the defendant and other persons still at large committed the offences in April at Iju-Ishaga, Lagos State. Read more
Businessman in court for locking, beating wife (Punch)
A businessman, Biola Idris, has been brought before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ita-Elewa, Ikorodu, for allegedly assaulting his wife.
It was gathered that the victim on June 16, 2021, made a complaint to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team that Idris allegedly locked her up in their factory and assaulted her.
According to the DSVRT, the victim sustained grievous injuries in the process.
The DSVRT, in a statement, said the matter was referred to the Owutu Police Station and the suspect was arrested.
The statement read in part, “The victim was immediately referred for medical attention and the team assisted her in preserving the evidence of the assault. She disclosed that this was not the first time her husband would physically, emotionally, verbally, and economically abuse her. Read more
Police raid black spots, arrest 144 male suspects in Lagos (Vanguard)
Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one hundred and forty four (144) male suspects.
The suspects were arrested during the raiding of blackspots in Ebutte Meta area of Lagos State on Wednesday 30th June, 2021 by a combined team of operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Command’s Special Squad and Taskforce.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson Lagos State Police Command CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said that “the raid was at the instance of the intelligence reports and the special request for assistance from the neighborhood to dislodge criminals hibernating in some of the shanties in the area”. Read more
We’ll sanction errant officer over bizman’s bleeding wife – LASTMA

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Olajide Oduyoye, has said the officer involved in the alleged extortion of a Dubia-based businessman, Jude Eze, will be dealt with according to the state’s civil service rules.
PUNCH Metro had reported that a combined team of policemen and LASTMA officials arrested Jude last Friday in the Akowonjo area of the state for seat belt infringement and drove off with his bleeding wife, Sophia.
It was reported that Sophia was bleeding and could not use the seat belt, but attempts to explain to the LASTMA personnel proved abortive as they allegedly impounded Jude’s vehicle with his wife inside.
The father of four had told PUNCH Metro that while he was pleading with the officials to allow him to take his wife to hospital, one of them jumped into the car and drove away. Read more
Why we’ve not taken Super TV CEO’s suspected killer to court – Police (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has explained why it has not taken Chidinma Ojukwu, the prime suspect in the killing of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to court.
The University of Lagos undergraduate and Ataga reportedly lodged in a service apartment in the Lekki area of the state and the corpse of the latter was discovered in the room the following day.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, told one of our correspondents on Wednesday that Chidinma would be taken to court after the police had concluded their investigation.
“We will take her to court when we finish the investigation; we are still investigating,” he stated. Read more
Court remands Lagos ex-vice council chair, Shakiru, over alleged cocaine export (Tribune)
Justice Ayokunle Faji of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has remanded a former vice chairman of Lagos Island Local Government Area (LGA) Asekun Sakiru Kehinde in prison custody for allegedly exporting 1.000 kilogrammes of cocaine.
Justice Ayokunle made the order after Kehinde pleaded “not guilty” to a one-count charge bordering on the offence.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the defendant was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a charge marked FHC/L/99c/2021.During the trial, NDLEA prosecutor Abu Ibrahim told the judge that Kehinde committed the offence on June 7, 2021, during the outward clearance of passengers on a Virgin Atlantic Airlines flight from Lagos to London-Heathrow, at the Departure Hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos.
