Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died in a London clinic.
His longtime media aide, Garba Shehu, confirmed the passing in a brief statement issued on Sunday afternoon.
Shehu’s statement read: “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.” The statement was signed with the date: July 13, 2025.
No further details were provided regarding the cause of death.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, had a history of seeking medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
A retired Major General, Buhari previously ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president three decades later.
He was notable as the first opposition candidate in Nigerian history to defeat an incumbent president.Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
