Carpenter bags life jail for raping neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter (Punch)

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old carpenter, Tayo Akinboyewa, to life imprisonment for having unlawful sexual intercourse with his neighbour’s 12-year-old primary school pupil.

The judge said he was satisfied that the prosecutrix (victim)’s testimony that Akinboyewa had sexual intercourse with her was corroborated by the medical report.

He said that the prosecution had proved the charge of defilement against Akinboyewa. Read more

#EndSARS protester arraigned for alleged rifle possession (Punch)

Three years after the #EndSARS protests, one of the protesters who is still being held in prison, Rasheed Bolaji Wasiu, was on Tuesday arraigned before the Lagos State High Court at the Tafa Balewa Square for alleged possession of firearms.

Wasiu, who has been in Kirikiri Medium Security Prison in Lagos since 2020, was arraigned before Justice Yetunde Adesanya.

He is facing a count of possession of firearms preferred against him by the Lagos State Government. Read more

Blood on Chidinma’s dress matched Ataga’s DNA – Expert (Punch)

Dr Richard Somiari, a forensic expert in the alleged murder trial of Chidinma Ojukwu, on Tuesday, revealed that the DNA blood sample found on Chidinma’s red dress matched that of the victim, Michael Ataga, the late Super TV CEO.

Somiari, who is a director and consultant for the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, gave the evidence before the Lagos State High Court, at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Ojukwu, a 300-level, Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, is being prosecuted for the murder of Ataga, alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu and one Adedapo Quadri. Read more

NDLEA destroys 304,436kg of illicit drugs in Lagos (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, on Tuesday, destroyed a total of 304,436kg kilograms and 40,042 litres of illicit substances seized from parts of Lagos and Ogun states.

Speaking at a ceremony where the seized drugs were publicly destroyed in Badagry, Lagos State, the Chairman of the agency, Brig Gen Buba Marwa (retd), said the open destruction of the seized illicit drugs followed court orders.

He further called for more public support for ongoing efforts by the NDLEA and other stakeholders to curb the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.

Soldier in custody for allegedly stabbing motorcyclist in Lagos bar (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified corporal in the Nigerian Army was said to have allegedly stabbed a commercial motorcyclist simply identified as Saheed Isa with a knife at a lounge at Itamaga in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred on April 13 at about 3:00 p.m.

It was also learnt that the soldier allegedly stabbed Isa as a result of a misunderstanding.

1-year-old baby burnt in Lagos community attack – Police (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a one-year-old baby during an attack at Egan Oriomi, in the Otto Awori Local Council Development Area of Ojo, Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that some residents of the community who got caught up in the attack also sustained varying degrees of injuries.

While speaking with our correspondent in an interview, Hundeyin said, “There was an attack on the community on Saturday morning. They burnt houses and there was a baby found in the burnt houses. When the police got there, they saw houses that were burnt and shops looted. Some members of the community also sustained gunshot wounds.” Read more

Lagos police arrest 1,019 suspects in 6 days (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command said on Sunday that a total of 1,019 suspected miscreants were arrested in different parts of the state in six days.

Two Netherlands citizens to be arraigned over alleged $1.4m theft (Punch)

Two citizens of the Netherlands, Eline Holtes and Henricus Jacob De Kok, are slated to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos on April 17, 2024, over alleged $1,407,373 theft.

The charges, brought by the Police Force Criminal Investigation Department, include conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, and stealing.

Lagos dispatch rider nabbed for allegedly fleeing with N1.7m iPhones (Punch)

The Lagos Police Command has apprehended a dispatch rider, Matthew Odah, for fleeing with three iPhones worth N1.7m meant for delivery.

This was disclosed in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Sunday.

Hundeyin said the dispatch rider was supposed to deliver three iPhones worth N1.7m, to a client, but he fled with them. Read more

Lagos seeks help in identifying woman assaulting baby in viral video (Punch)

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has appraled to the public for assistance in identifying a woman captured in a viral video assaulting a baby for urinating on the floor.

The agency condemned the act in a post it shared on its verified X handle @LSdsva on Saturday and urged the public to help locate the woman.

In the video which went viral on Saturday, the woman was seen beating the baby with a rod while disregarding the child’s cries. Read more

Court sentences Bobrisky to 6 months in prison (Punch)

The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Friday, sentenced controversial crossdresser, Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine for abusing the naira.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro, while sentencing the convict, said the judgment would be a deterrent to others who are found abusing and mutilating the naira.

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) on Wednesday, April 17, conducted clearance operations on the pedestrian bridges at Ikate Elegushi and Agungi along Ajah.

Court fixes June 10 to commence trial against Lagos pastor (Nation)

Magistrate Antoinette Dirisu of the Magistrate Court in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos, has fixed June 10, 2024, to commence trial against a Lagos-based Pastor, Jude Ojo.

The 57-year-old clergyman was arraigned before the court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, perversion of the course of justice and aiding the escape of the suspects.

The arraignment was consequent to a petition written by a traditional ruler of the Otumara community in Lagos, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye to the Lagos State Police Command, alleging a threat to his life. Read more
