Catholic priest remanded for impregnating teenager (DailyTrust)
Rev. Fr. Nwaigwe Stephen, a Catholic Priest in Anambra state, has been remanded for allegedly raping and impregnating a teenager.
An Awka Chief Magistrates’ Court, otherwise known as the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court , Anambra State remanded the priest in prison till December 6, 2023.
The magistrate ordered the prosecutor to transmit the original case file to the office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Anambra State. Read more

NIPOST raids 32 unlicensed courier operators in Lagos (ThisDay)
The combined enforcement team of the Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department (CLRD) of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), and the police from the Force Criminal Investigation Department Alagbon (FCID), has commenced its fourth quarter enforcement operation nationwide, beginning from Lagos State.
The team, at the weekend clamped down on over 32 unlicensed courier operators in Lagos and made some arrests.
During the raid, which lasted for hours, some unregistered and unlicensed operators of courier and logistics services were arrested and handed over to the FCID for prosecution proceedings, which commenced the same day of the Lagos clampdown. Read more
United Airlines faults ‘‘bad weather’’ over diversion of Abuja-bound aircraft to Asaba (Vanguard)
United Nigeria Airlines flight has explained why one of its aircrafts destined for Abuja on Sunday landed in Asaba, the capital of Delta state.
The airline, in a statement signed by its Head Corporate Communications, Achilleus Chud-Uchegbu, claimed the incident was as a result of bad weather in Abuja, so the pilot temporarily diverted the flight to Asaba.
It said the pilot was aware of the temporary diversion and had been briefed accordingly. Read more

The Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, has said the newly assented 2023 Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Bill by President Bola Tinubu will facilitate research, development and production in the defence sector and aid the growth of the local industry in the manufacturing of defence gadgets and equipment.
The 2023 DICON Bill, sponsored by the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson will provide a comprehensive regulatory framework for the regulation of the manufacturing, distribution, storage, and disposal of defence articles in Nigeria.
The Defence Minister stated this during a visit and tour of the manufacturing facility of Equipment and Protective Applications International Limited in Ogun State, in the company of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana and several other senior members of the Ministry. Armed robbers invade Ogun poly communities, shoot students (Punch)
Some suspected armed robbers have invaded the Ipara-Remo and Ode-Remo communities, hosting some students of the Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State, just as some students were shot with female students allegedly sexually molested.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspected robbers stormed the communities around 1 am two Fridays ago and last Sunday, shooting sporadically and entering into students’ hostels to cart away their belongings, molest some female students, and also shoot some others, among which was Francis Dwumfour, leaving him in a critical condition.

Irish novelist Paul Lynch wins 2023 Booker Prize with “Prophet Song’’

Irish author Paul Lynch who previously described his novel Prophet Song as being informed by “the sense of liberal democratic slide” has won the 2023 Booker Prize.
The 46-year-old, who lives in Dublin, was presented with his trophy by last year’s winner Shehan Karunatilaka, at a ceremony held at Old Billingsgate, London.
He is the fifth Irish author to win the award, worth £50,000 (€57,563), according to the Booker Prize, following Iris Murdoch, John Banville, Roddy Doyle and Anne Enright. Read more
Sierra Leone president says ‘most leaders’ of unrest arrested (AlJazeera)
Sierra Leone has arrested most of the leaders of an armed attack in the capital that has prompted the government to declare a nationwide curfew, the country’s president has said.
“Most of the leaders have been arrested. Security operations and investigations are ongoing,” President Julius Maada Bio said on national television on Sunday following armed clashes in Freetown after what the government said was an attack on a military armoury.

Death toll from flooding in Somalia climbs to nearly 100 (CNN)
The number of people killed by floods from heavy rains in Somalia has risen to 96, state news agency SONNA said on Saturday.
“Somalia’s flood death toll climbs to 96,” SONNA said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, adding the figure had been confirmed by Mahamuud Moallim, the head of the country’s disaster management agency.
Like the rest of east and Horn of Africa, Somalia has been battered by relentless heavy rains that began in October, caused by the El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole weather phenomena. Read more
3 students of Palestinian descent shot in Vermont, USA (RNZ)
Police and federal agents searched for a gunman who shot and wounded three college students of Palestinian descent in Burlington, Vermont, in what investigators suspect was a hate-motivated crime, US authorities said.
A man with a pistol shot the three victims on the street near the University of Vermont on Saturday evening and then ran away, Burlington police said in a statement.
Two victims are US citizens and the third is a legal US resident, all 20 years old, police said. Two of the men were wearing a keffiyeh, the traditional black-and-white checkered scarf of Middle Eastern dress, at the time of the attack, police said. Read more
