CBN reports all-time high remittance inflows of $553m for July (BusinessDay)
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reported a significant increase in remittance inflows, reaching $553 million in July 2024, a 130 percent increase from the corresponding period in 2023.
This figure represents the highest monthly total inflows on record and reflects ongoing efforts by the CBN to enhance liquidity in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, the apex bank said in a statement signed by Hakama Sidi-Ali, acting director, corporate communications, CBN.
The substantial growth in remittance receipts is attributable to policy measures introduced by the CBN to enhance liquidity in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market. Read more
NLC mobilises for indefinite strike over Police summon of Ajaero (Sun)
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it has instructed its members across the country to initiate an indefinite strike starting at midnight if any harm comes to its President, Joe Ajaero and other leaders.
The decision follows an invitation from the Nigerian Police Force for Ajaero to answer questions regarding allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and treason.
In a communique released after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the NLC condemned these accusations as politically motivated and a clear attempt to attempt to undermine its role. Read more
Man dies while undergoing 19-day dry fast in Lagos – Police (Nation)
The Police Command in Lagos State has confirmed the death of a 58-year old unnamed man while embarking on a spiritual fasting.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
Hundeyin said that the incident happened in the Alagbado axis of the state on Monday at about 6am. Read more

In a tragic turn of events, Rt. Hon, Harford Oseke, the former Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, has passed away.
The incident occurred on Monday when Oseke, who was engaged in his regular exercise routine at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the state capital, suddenly collapsed and died.
Efforts to revive him proved futile, and he was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. His body has since been taken to Apex Medical Centre in Awka. Read more

NANS condemns killing of Kwara student, Mojisola (Tribune)
National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the gruesome murder of Mojisola Awesu, a 21-year-old student of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, calling for a thorough investigation to unravel those behind the heinous crime.
NANS Senate President, Mr Henry Okunomo, made this known in a statement signed on Tuesday, in Kano.

Police arrest woman for diversion of company’s N3m (Punch)
Operatives of Lagos State Police Command have arrested and detained a 25-year-old woman for allegedly diverting N3 million belonging to a company into her account.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos.
Hundeyin alleged that the suspect (name withheld) and her other co-workers, in a catering company, conspired and diverted money realised from the sale of the company’s products into their personal accounts. Read more

Ogun Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, described the death of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr Olaniyi Ijalaye, as devastating and a rude shock.
The late Ogun REC reportedly died Monday evening in Abuja after attending a meeting convened by the Commission at its headquarters.

Ian McKellen has said he is dealing with “agonising pain” following his fall from the theatre stage in June, and that he now “avoids going out”.
In June, the actor, 85, lost his footing and fell from the stage at the Noël Coward in the West End during a performance of Player Kings. He was rushed to a hospital, while the audience were evacuated from the venue and the rest of the performance was cancelled.

The 18-year-old previously filed for her legal name to be changed from Shiloh Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Jolie on her birthday in May, and published an announcement of the decision in the Los Angeles Times as part of the legal process.
According to California law, a judge can only approve a petition to change someone’s name one month after they have published legal forms in a newspaper. Shiloh’s petition was granted on Monday (19 August), as per official court documents obtained by TMZ. Read more

On Monday, Aug. 19, Stockholms Auktionsverk announced that the belongings of the Swedish DJ and producer will be auctioned off in person and online to support his namesake charity. All of the items were donated by his family.
The performer, born Tim Bergling, released a total of three studio albums over the course of his career and embarked on three major tours. He retired from touring two years before his death at age 28, citing health reasons. Pokrovsk families with children to evacuate under mandatory order from Ukrainian officials (PBS)
Ukrainian authorities on Monday ordered families with children to urgently evacuate the eastern city of Pokrovsk, where the Russian army is bearing down fast despite a lightning Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.
Local authorities said Russian forces are advancing so quickly that families must leave the city and other nearby towns and villages from Tuesday. Around 53,000 people still live in Pokrovsk, officials say, while some have already fled their homes as Russia’s army menaces.
Pokrovsk is one of Ukraine’s main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region. Its capture would compromise Ukraine’s defensive abilities and supply routes and would bring Russia closer to its stated aim of capturing the entire Donetsk region. Read more

The Israeli military says it has recovered the bodies of six hostages in an overnight operation in Gaza.
The recovery came as the United States, Egypt and Qatar are trying to mediate a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Chelsea agree Felix fee, Gallagher to join Atletico (BBC)

Jannik Sinner, the No 1 men’s tennis player, has been found to bear no fault or negligence for two failed anti-doping tests after twice testing positive for the banned substance clostebol in March. An independent tribunal last week determined that Sinner had been contaminated with the substance through his physiotherapist.
Neither of Sinner’s positive anti-doping tests had previously been published. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) organisation consulted with scientific experts and then took the case to an independent tribunal headed by Sports Resolutions. Read more
