CDAs tasked on grassroots development, empowerment

Residents of Oshodi, Mafoluku, Shogunle, and Ewu Tuntun communities (OMSE) in Lagos have tasked their newly appointed executives on grassroots developments in the communities.

The residents gave the charge, yesterday, at a programme held at Oshodi-Isolo Council in Lagos, tagged: ‘My Role as a Community Leader in Advancing Development in the Community.’

The programme, which focused on leadership roles of the newly-appointed executives of the Community Development Associations (CDA), stressed on the various functions of community leaders in providing grassroots development and advancement of the society.

Speaking with The Guardian, one of the event organisers, Olawale Ayinde, stressed the need for the newly appointed CDA chairmen to be more involved in issues and activities happening in their communities, take their leadership responsibilities seriously and serve as intermediaries between councils and the people, when necessary.

“They should know that the task ahead is not for jamboree but a serious one, as individuals living in these communities expect positive results in proffering grassroots development,” he added.

Chief Executive Officer of Centre for Children Health Educations, Orientation and Protection (CEE-HOPE), Betty Abbah, in his address, told the CDA leaders to speak up in the face of injustice.

She added: “We can bring about peaceful change in our communities. We should see ourselves as leaders and change makers and always speak up when issue arises.”

A public affairs analyst and one of the guest speakers, Gbola Oba, advised the communities not to wait for councils for their development, but rather take proactive steps towards their own betterment. (Guardian)
