Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Imo West Senatorial district. Okorocha polled 141,117 votes to defeat his opponent Senator Hope Uzodinma who got 1,359 votes. The Nigerian Army, in conjunction with other security agencies, conducted a show of force in Dikwa Emirate in Borno on Saturday to demonstrate their commitment to protect the people. Egypt bans former presidential candidate from traveling abroad (Independent)
An Egyptian judge has issued an order banning a former presidential candidate from traveling abroad over suspicions he may be linked to a case alleging foreign financing to harm national security, state news agency MENA reported on Saturday. Khaled Ali, a prominent rights lawyer who ran in the 2012 presidential election, had not previously been part of the case, in which several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are accused of receiving foreign funds. Ali, who has denied any involvement, told Reuters on Saturday that he “had not been summoned for questioning in that case at any time during this period”. Read more
Magnitude 5.9 earthquake hits northern Haiti (CNN)
At least 10 people were killed after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Haiti on Saturday night, according to Haiti’s civil protection agency. Another 135 people were injured and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, the agency wrote on Twitter Sunday. Read more
