Money laundering: Court adjourns Mompha’s trial till Dec 19 (Punch)
Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court stting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday, adjourned till December 19, 2023 further hearing in the alleged N6bn fraud trial involving social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission made this known on its Facebook page.
Mompha alongside his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited, was arraigned by the commission’s Lagos Zonal Command, on January 12, 2022 on eight charges bordering on conspiracy, retention of proceeds of criminal conduct and laundering of funds obtained through unlawful activity, among others. Court frees 2 suspects detained for 4 years (Punch)
The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, on Tuesday, released two suspects who had been in custody for four years without being tried.
Four years after their incarceration, the two suspects were brought before the court for the first time, for their arraignment over alleged keeping unlawful society and possession of hard drugs (weed), but they were released by the court.
The defendants, who had been in prison custody since 2019 without being arraigned, were Friday Uche, charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery; Usman Abdullah, charged with unlawful society membership and Sulaman Isah, charged with possession of a hard drug (weed). Read more
2 nabbed over alleged gang rape in Lagos (Punch)
Two persons, Joy Chigozie and Musa Salihu have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command in connection with a gang rape at Airport Road, Kirikiri area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened on Sunday around 6 p.m. but was reported on Monday around 10.30 p.m. to the Kirikiri Police Station.
The 29-year-old victim was lured by one of the suspects of the gang rape, who is still at large, to his alleged aunty’s shop where she was made to drink an alcoholic substance until she was drunk. Read more
Police arrest 2 for allegedly robbing skitmaker (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command said it arrested two suspects, Sunday Osagie and Ayodele Adeolu, for allegedly robbing a skitmaker, Ekwutousi Philo.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Rapid Response Squad unit of the Lagos State Police Command and shared on its Facebook page on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Philo had made a video which has since gone viral on October 20, alleging that she was robbed by some policemen in the Alapere area of Ketu, Lagos State. Read more
How cult group killed Lagos Baale’s son, witness tells court (Punch)
Inspector Usang Otu, a police prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of three alleged members of an unlawful society group called ‘IBILE ’(cult group) over the alleged murder of one Owolabi Ajibola, on Monday, told the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square how he investigated the case.
Otu said that it was during the investigation that he discovered that the person who came to make a report of the case of conspiracy and murder was the father of the deceased, Baale Idowu.
The defendants who are alleged to be members of an unlawful society group called ‘IBILE’ and accused of killing the deceased are Jemilu Adamu, Babatunde Gbenga, and Jimoh Idris. Read more
Father defiles 12-year-old daughter (Punch)
A police Prosecution Witness Inspector, Glory Eyo, on Monday, narrated to the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos how a father, Abdullah Abiodun, allegedly defiled his 12-year-old daughter.
Eyo who was led in evidence by the state prosecuting counsel, Olushola Sholeye, told the court that the minor was defiled by her father in the Badagry area of the state.
The witness also told Justice Abiola Soladoye that it was the defendant’s son, Usman (a younger brother to the victim), who caught his father in the act and raised the alarm. Read more
Motorists accuse police of using hoodlums for extortion (Punch)
Motorists have accused some policemen of conspiring with hoodlums to extort them at the Berger and Oshodi areas in Lagos State.
During a visit to Oshodi and Berger on Monday, PUNCH Metro observed that hoodlums asked commercial drivers for N300 to be provided to the police.
Speaking in separate interviews with PUNCH Metro, some commercial drivers alleged that the police officers would make it difficult for them to transport passengers in the park if they did not pay their daily dues to the hoodlums.
Teacher accused of sexually assaulting 7-year old pupil (Nation)
An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court heard yesterday how a teacher, Ngozi Igwe, allegedly assaulted a seven-year-old pupil in the classroom.
The teacher is facing a lone count charge bordering on sexual assault by penetration before Justice Rahman Oshodi.
Led in evidence by the state counsel, Ms Bukola Okeowo, the JS2 pupil, now 12 years old, who testified virtually, told the court that the incident happened when she was seven years old and the defendant was her teacher in primary three. Read more
Naira Marley, Sam Larry file N40m suit (Nation)
Detained Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, a.k.a. Naira Marley and his associate, Sam Larry, have filed a N40 million breach of fundamental human rights suit before a Lagos High Court, Igbosere.
Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN), who filed the suit on behalf of his clients, is suing the Nigeria Police for breach of his clients’ right to personal liberty.
Joined as respondents in the suit are: Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Waheed Ayilara, Deputy Commissioner of Police Homicide Section Panti, and the Chief Magistrate Court One Yaba. Read more
Bricklayer gets 2 life sentences for defiling 13-year-old girl (Guardian)
An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Wednesday sentenced a bricklayer, Gabriel Awaye to two life sentences for defiling a 13-year-old girl in his room.
Delivering judgment, Justice Abiola Soladoye, held that the prosecution proved the ingredients of the two counts charge of defilement and sexual assault against Awaye
Soladoye said that the defendant, by his audacious sexual recklessness, was not fit to be in the community of civilised people and should be locked away for life.
