Policeman standing trial over murder of Lagos lawyer knows fate on April 3 (Vanguard)
A Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, on Tuesday, adjourned till April 3, 2023, for ruling in a no-case submission filed by a police officer, Drambi Vandi, charged with the murder of a Lagos-based lawyer.
Vandi is standing trial on a one-count charge of shooting the Lagos lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, to death on December 25, 2022, at Ajah area of Lagos.
The defendant had on arraignment pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him by the Lagos State government. Read more
Graduate jailed 2 years for impersonation, internet romance scam (Vanguard)
An Ikeja Special Offences Court, yesterday, sentenced a graduate, Pul Dogun, to two years in prison for impersonating a US military officer and engaging in an internet love scam.
Justice Ramon Oshodi sentenced Dogun to two years at the Kirikiri prison, following his plea bargain to an amended charge of impersonation.
Justice Oshodi said: “I have listened to you and your lawyer’s allocutus but I do not agree that your guilty pleas are timing.
“The only reason I am inclined to grant non-custodial is that I can see you are remorseful. I hereby sentence you to two years imprisonment.” Read more
Police begin investigation into alleged arson at Lagos spare parts market (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Police Command has started an investigation into the suspected arson attack at the Akere Motor Spare Parts Market, Tolu, Olodi Apapa in Lagos on Wednesday morning.
In a statement, the police spokesman in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin said though the fire was put out around 3 am, a 65-year-old security guard lost his life in the incident.
Meanwhile, traders at the market have lamented the loss of several millions of naira. Reports have it that some group of gunmen came around 2:30 am and set the market ablaze, killing a man identified as the security guard.
Similarly, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in a statement earlier on Wednesday said the deceased male adult had a “gunshot injury”, fuelling suspicion that the fire was a deliberate attack on the market. Read more
Man in court for stealing N10m from Lagos company (Punch)
A man, Folarin Ajayi, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba, in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N10m from a company, the United Parcel Services, in the Gbagada area of Lagos State.
Ajayi, who was arraigned before Magistrate O Obasa, is facing one-count bordering on theft preferred against him by the police.
The police, Inspector Cletus Monjok, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in the Meiran area of the state. Read more
40-year-old man arraigned for averting justice (Punch)
A 40-year-old man, Ademola Agunbiade, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba, in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, for allegedly averting the course of justice.
Ademola, who was arraigned on March 6, 2023, before Magistrate S. O Obasa, is facing one-count bordering on preventing the course of justice preferred against him by the police.
The police, Inspector Akinsanya Florence, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in the Meiran area of the state.
According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is punishable under Section 971(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Read more
Soldier nabbed for alleged drug trafficking in Lagos (Punch)
A 49-year-old soldier, Olanrewaju Lawal, has been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos State for alleged trafficking of tramadol and other illicit drugs in the state.
Lawal who was arraigned before Justice Akintayo Aluko is facing six-count bordering on conspiracy and unlawfully engaging in the transportation of the banned substances.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s prosecutor, Lambert Nor, who is the head of NDLEA’s legal/prosecution department of the Lagos State Command, told the court that the defendant and others now at large, have been operating a drug trafficking organisation between September 15, 2022, till January 12, 2023, when he was arrested at Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos State. Tenants receive death threat from herbalist, tackles landlord (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a landlord, Okechukwu Chukwunahi, over what it described as ‘trial by ordeal’ after his tenants reported that he took their names to a shrine following a misunderstanding at their residence in the state.
Chukwunahi, 44, who is facing two-count bordering on conspiracy and trial by ordeal, was arraigned before an Ojo Magistrate’s Court in the state.
The prosecution counsel, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 21, 2023, at Ira Quatres, Ojo, Lagos. Read more
Ex-politician, wife clash over child’s custody, father-in-law’s detention (Punch)
A legal practitioner, Ndidi Iyamu, has accused her ex-husband, identified simply as Elakhe, of allegedly conniving with policemen in Lagos State to arrest and detain her 70-year-old father for hours in an attempt to take custody of their son.
PUNCH Metro gathered that after the couple’s marriage was dissolved by the court in 2018, the custody of their only child was granted to Iyamu.
The mother of one said ever since she was granted custody of the child, her ex-husband had been deploying different tactics, including using the instrumentality of the police to take custody of the 11-year-old child. Read more
Whitney: Chrisland seeks autopsy review, inquest begins April 4 (Punch)
The hearing of the Coroner Inquest set up to ascertain the cause of death of a 12-year-old Chrisland International School pupil, Whitney Adeniran, who died on February 9, 2023, during the school’s inter-house sports activities at Agege Stadium, Lagos will commence hearing in the matter on April 4.
The Coroner Magistrate, Olabisi Fajana, fixed the date on Monday after entertaining submissions of all lawyers who appeared before the Magistrate Court, sitting in Ogba.
Counsel for the deceased family, Femi Falana (SAN), told the court that they were unable to file a witness statement as instructed by the court at the last adjourned date.
Falana informed the court that the magistrate’s registry refused to process the enrolling of the witness statement because there was no provision for filing of coroner processes. Read more
Freight agent jailed 5 years for drug trafficking (Punch)
The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State has convicted and sentenced a 55-year-old freight agent, Oyeyemi Sharafadeen, to five years imprisonment for exporting several banned substances.
Justice Chukwuejekwu Aneke handed down the jail term after Sharafadeen pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful export of the banned substances preferred against him by the National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency.
During his arraignment, the NDLEA prosecutor, Augustine Nwagu, told the court that the convict was arrested on January 9, 2023, with the banned substances, which he planned to export to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Soldiers shoot 15-year-old boy, keke operator dead in Lagos (Punch)
The family of a 15-year-old boy, Pelumi Sulaimon, have been thrown into mourning after soldiers attached to Operation MESA allegedly shot him dead around Makoko, in the Yaba area of Lagos State.
According to residents in the area, the soldiers were hired by political thugs to carry out a reprisal on their opponents in the community on Sunday, February 26.
PUNCH Metro gathered that when the soldiers got to the community, they started shooting indiscriminately and in the process, a stray bullet hit Pelumi who was on his way to buy drinks for his friends to celebrate his birthday. Read more
Police to arraign 6 Lagos robbers (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of six members of two armed robbery gangs for allegedly dispossessing members of the public of their valuables in the Ajegunle and Alaba-Rago areas of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, said a locally-made gun, a motorcycle, and two phones were recovered from the suspects.
Noting that efforts were on to arrest other fleeing members of the two gangs, Hundeyin said the suspects would be charged. Read more
NDLEA nabs India-bound businessman with 9.40kg heroin at Lagos airport (Guardian)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have arrested a businessman, Kingsley Celestino, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, over 9.40 kilogrammes of heroin concealed in false bottoms of his two travelling bags.
Kingsley, a business class passenger on Qatar Airline flight was arrested at Terminal 2 of the MMIA on Saturday 4th March on his way to India. Though a native of Nnewi South Local Council of Anambra State, the 49-year-old was travelling with a Guinean international passport.
Spokesperson for the Agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement, yesterday, said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect frequently travels to India on business class tickets. Read more
