Court convicts 8 for illegal waste dumping (Guardian)

The Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, has convicted eight individuals for indiscriminate waste dumping along Ejigbo Road.

The offenders were arraigned after their arrest on June 28, 2025, based on credible intelligence and community reports of persistent illegal dumping in the area.

Delivering judgement, the court imposed varying sentences. Four convicts were fined N20,000 each, with an option to perform community service, while the remaining four, facing a three-count charge, were fined N75,000 each or given the alternative of custodial sentencing. (Read more)

Cleric jailed 53 years for sexually assaulting 14-year-old daughter (Punch)

A 45-year-old pastor, Ndukwe Ogbu, has been convicted and sentenced to 53 years imprisonment for defiling and sexually assaulting his 14-year-old daughter by penetration by a Lagos State Sexual Offences Court, sitting in Ikeja.

Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe ruled that the prosecution had proved beyond a reasonable doubt all the elements of the charges against Ogbu.

During sentencing, on Monday, the judge held, “The evidence presented leaves no room for doubt. The convict’s actions are reprehensible, and justice must be served.” Read more 

NDLEA arrests Ex-Footballer, ‘Business Partner’ over alleged attempt to smuggle Cocaine (Channels)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested an ex-international football player and his businessman partner over an alleged attempt to smuggle a consignment of cocaine into Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos.

The NDLEA said the business partner was arrested upon his arrival at the Lagos airport on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

In a statement by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, it said a search of his carry-on bag revealed 37 wraps of cocaine weighing 800 grams concealed therein. (Read more)

Man dies by suicide shortly after acid attack on girlfriend (Guardian)

A 43-year-old man, Pere Faruk, has reportedly died by suicide shortly after allegedly pouring acid on his girlfriend during a domestic altercation on Lagos Island.

The incident occurred at about 5:40 p.m. on June 30, at No. 8 Messy Street, Lagos Island.
This was disclosed by Zagazola Makama through their official X handle.

He stated that the deceased’s younger brother, Pere Jeli, who resides nearby at No. 9 Igbosere Street, was informed of the incident and immediately raised an alarm. (Read more)

Lagos vows to prosecute indiscriminate waste disposers (Punch)

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that individuals who dump refuse on roads and in communities across the state face the wrath of the law.

The spokesperson for the ministry, Adekunle Adesina, disclosed this on Tuesday while reacting to enquiries by our correspondents over the refuse dumps in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

One dead, three injured as truck crushes bus in Lagos (Vanguard)

A truck crushed a commercial minibus, popularly called Korope, on Old Ipaja Road near Agbotikuyo, Lagos, on Sunday morning, killing the driver and injuring three passengers.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. when a fully loaded 40-ft Mack container truck with registration MUS 729 XY suffered brake failure and rammed into the minibus heading toward Iyana Ipaja, Alimosho. This tragedy comes just two days after a separate accident where two BRT buses collided at Cement Bus Stop, also in Alimosho, leaving many passengers — including a media practitioner — hospitalised.

Confirming the crash, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and praised the quick action of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers. (Read more)

Lawyer, one other bag N5m bail in suspected fraud trial (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has granted bail to a lawyer, Emmanuel Umukoro, and one Taiwo Aribe, who were arraigned for allegedly defrauding a man of N10,800,000.

Justice Adesanya admitted Umukoro, the first defendant, to bail on self-recognisance after he told the court that he was called to the Nigerian Bar between 1988 and 1989.

The second defendant, Aribe, was granted bail in the sum of N5m, with two sureties in like sum. The judge directed that one of the sureties must be a blood relation and that both must reside within Lagos State. (Read more)
