Court orders Evans to return 233k Euros ransom (Nation)
The Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) has ordered billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike alias Evans, to refund the sum of 233,000 Euros ransom he obtained from one of his victims, Chief Donatus Dunu.
Justice Olukayode Ogunjobi also ordered the convicted kidnapper to pay N50m as general damages in favour of the claimant.
Evans abducted Duru, a pharmacist, on February 14, 2017 for ransom and held him hostage.
Duru subsequently escaped from captivity, but not before Evans demanded and obtained €233,000 from his captive. Read more
Lagos orders coroner’s inquest into Chrisland School pupil’s death (Nation)
Lagos State has ordered a coroner’s inquest to ascertain the cause of death of Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, a 12-year-old pupil of Chrisland School, who died on February 9.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) gave the directive in a statement yesterday. He assured the people that a thorough investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause of Whitney’s death.
Onigbanjo said: “A Coroner’s Inquest has been requested, in line with Section 14 and 15 of the Coroners’ Systems Law, Laws of Lagos State 2015, to determine the cause and circumstances of death. By Section 14(1)(d) of the Coroners’ System Law, a report of death shall be made to any of the agencies for the report of death or the office of the Coroner, and be subject to post-mortem examination where there is reasonable cause to believe that the cause of death was violent, unnatural or suspicious. 1 injured in Lagos eatery attack (Nation)
Suspected robbers on Sunday shot a security man at the Lekki branch of Chicken Republic.
The incident, it was learnt, happened about 3pm while the outlet was tending to customers. The sudden attack was said to have caused panic as people scampered to safety at the sound of gunshots.
Unconfirmed reports said the gunmen carted away valuables.
Chicken Republic, in a post on its social media handles, said it was an attempted robbery. It also confirmed that a member of its staff was shot and rushed to the hospital for treatment. Read more
Lagos engineer seeks court protection against alleged land grabber, Police (Nation)
An Engineer, Mr. Samuel Oladele, has asked an Ikeja High Court to protect his life from the some officers of the Nigeria Police and suspected land grabbers.
He said there has been persistent threat to his life by the Nigeria Police and suspected land grabbers.
His prayer is contained in a fundamental rights suit number: ID/14897/MFHR/2023 filed before an Ikeja High Court through his lawyer, Adetayo Bello.
The applicant is praying the court to stop his continued harassment and intimidation by the men of Nigeria police. Read more
PDP chieftain, Dapo Sarumi’s aide shot dead in Lagos (Punch)
Police in Lagos State have commenced an investigation into the death of Toyin Adeniji, one of the aides of prominent Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Chief Dapo Sarumi.
Adeniji, 47, was reportedly shot dead by suspected cultists in the Agege area of the State.
It was gathered that the deceased was at the front of his house at Oyewole Road, Agege when the gunmen invaded the area and shot him at close range.
Seven other persons, who were outside of the PDP chieftain’s house in Agege narrowly escaped death as the gunmen shot sporadically. Read more
Nollywood actress Omoseyin gets N5m bail, trial begins April 3 (Punch)
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday, admitted a Nollywood actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, to bail in the sum of N5m with one surety in like sum.
The Nollywood actress was charged with alleged tampering and spraying of the new naira notes
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission brought a two-count charge against Omoseyin, who was arraigned on Monday, before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke.

MAPOLY undergraduate accuses Lagos policemen of extortion (Punch)
A student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Sanni Faruk, has accused some policemen attached to the Meiran Police Division in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State of extorting N155,000 meant for his hostel fee.
The student said he was heading to school from home on Sunday, February 12, when the officers stopped the bus he was in at the Abule Egba area of the community. He said the policemen asked him to alight and searched him.
Faruk, who said nothing was found on him, further disclosed that the officers took him into their van and drove him to their police station, where he was asked to transfer the money to an account. Read more
Court remands man for defiling neighbours’ daughters (Punch)
A 44-year-old man, Paul Ndedigwe, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic and Violence Court for allegedly defiling three of his neighbours’ underage girls.
The defendant is facing three counts of defilement preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.
Ndedigiwe was alleged to have lured the girls to his apartment and allegedly defiled them.
The state prosecuting counsel, A. R. Abolade, told the court that the incident happened at Ifelodun Street, Amukoko area of Lagos, where the suspect resides with the girls’ parents. Read more
Man sent to prison for defiling 3 daughters, assaulting wife (Punch)
A 35-year-old man, Femi Afolabi, has been remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre by an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly defiling his three daughters, all under 10, and assaulting their mother.
The Magistrate, Ms. Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take Afolabi’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
She adjourned the case until March 7 for the DPP’s advice.
The police charged Afolabi who resides in Onipanu in the Ilupeju area of Lagos State with two counts of defilement and assault. Read more
Man to die by hanging for armed robbery (Punch)
Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Nojeem Badmos, to death by hanging for armed robbery.
Badmos was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery, preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.
According to the prosecution, the offence of conspiracy and armed robbery contravened the provisions of Sections 299 and 297 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
When the matter came up on Monday for judgment, the state prosecuting counsel, Mrs Adebanke Ogunde, announced her appearance while Mr Ajibade Benson appeared for the defence. Read more
Defilement: Probe begins as father dies fighting suspect (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the driver of Luyol Secondary School, Iju, Jacob Fatokin, for allegedly killing a father who accused him of sexually molesting his daughter in the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim’s parents, after being notified of the driver’s illicit act against their daughter, visited the school to tender an official complaint against the driver.
The owner of the school, after listening to the parents and the pupil who narrated her ordeal in the hands of the driver, reportedly questioned the driver, who denied the allegation.
Enraged by the development, the pupil’s mother, while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, said her husband slapped the driver, adding that the situation degenerated into a scuffle between the driver and her husband. Read more
Pastor bags life jail for impregnating 2 sisters (Punch)
An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic and Violence Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a 51-year-old pastor, Nduka Anyanwu, to life imprisonment for defiling and impregnating two teenage sisters.
Justice Abiola Soladoye handed down the sentence after finding Anyanwu guilty of the offence.
Anyanwu was arraigned on April 17, 2022, on two counts of defilement by the Lagos State Government.
The offence was said to have been committed between 2019 and August 2020 at Arowojobe Street, in the Oshodi area of the state. Read more
Church founder arrested for drug trafficking (Punch)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested the founder and General Overseer of Seraphic and Sabbath Assembly, Lagos, Nnodu Azuka; a student of Emmanuel College of Theology, Samanta, Ibadan, Udezuka Udoka, and their freight agent, Oyoyo Obasi, over an attempt to export methamphetamine and skunk consignments.
The items were said to have been concealed in kegs of palm oil and were meant to be moved through the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
According to a statement on Sunday by the Director, Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, Nnodu was arrested on Saturday at his church located at No 1, Sabbath Close, Ijesha area of Lagos, following the arrest of Obasi and Udoka on Thursday at the Lagos airport. Read more
Pump-action guns found in Ogboni leader’s Lagos house (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday declared wanted the leader of a fraternal institution, Ogboni, Tajudeen Bakare, for threatening public peace and possessing guns in the Surulere area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement posted on Twitter, said policemen, while acting on actionable intelligence, stormed Bakare’s residence.
He explained that during the sting operation, Bakare narrowly escaped.
Hundeyin said, “Following the emergence of a video earlier this week showing a man wielding a pump-action rifle and threatening public peace, the CSP Yinka Egbeyemi-led Rapid Response Squad, working on actionable intelligence, carried out a sting operation on the residence of the man in the Surulere area of the state. Soldier stabs Lagos trader to death over N100 (Punch)
A yet-to-be-identified soldier has allegedly stabbed a ticket agent, Ibrahim Ikudaisi, aka Guardian, to death over N100 ticket in the Oshodi area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Ikudaisi was visiting stores to demand N100 levy from different traders in a market in Oshodi when one of the traders refused to pay him.
The trader’s refusal to oblige to Ikudaisi’s request reportedly led to an argument and in the process, the soldier intervened to prevent the ticket agent from collecting the money from the trader.
It was learnt that the argument degenerated and in the process, the soldier brought out a knife and allegedly stabbed Ikudaisi in the chest. Read more
Alleged Defilement: Lagos State closes case against Dr. Olaleye (Independent)
Lagos State Government on Friday told a Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja that it has closed its case against the Medical Director of Cancer Care Foundation, Dr Olufemi Olaleye, charged with defiling his wife’s 16-year-old niece.
The state Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Babajide Martins announced this to the court after the prosecution had called six witnesses.
Defence counsel, Mr. Babatunde Ogala (SAN), however, informed the court that defence had filed a no-case submission.
Justice Ramon Oshodi consequently closed the prosecution’s case and adjourned until March 16 for adoption of written addresses on the no-case submission.
