Court rejects Emefiele’s request for foreign medical trip (Sun)
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), yesterday, rejected an application by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, seeking its permission to travel to the United Kingdom for medical check-up.
Emefiele is standing trial before Justice Hamza Muazu on an amended 20-count charge bordering on procurement fraud, obtaining by pretence, and forgery allegedly committed while in office as governor of the apex bank.
Among others, the prosecution alleged that Emefiele forged a document titled: “Re: Presidential Directive on Foreign Election Observer Missions”, dated January 26, 2023, with Ref No. SGF.43/L.01/201 and purported to have emanated from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The Loyola College Old Boys’ Association, has concluded plans to hold the school’s 70th anniversary lecture, on July 19, 2024, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, Lagos, at 11:00 a.m.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, will deliver the lecture titled ‘Reconstructing the Nigerian Economy for Sustainable Growth and Investment’.

Another House of Reps Member, Ekene Adams, dies (Leadership)
The House of Representatives has lost yet another member, Hon. Ekene Abubakar Adams.
Until his death on Tuesday morning after a brief illness, Adams was chairman, House Committee on Sports, and representing Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency of Kaduna State.

Lagos opens new community health centre (Punch)
The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, on behalf of the state government, launched the newly built Iraye-Oke Primary Health Centre, facilitated by Hon. Wale Raji representing Epe Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives.
A Tuesday statement noted that the health centre, which was completed in 2023, became operational on Monday following its staffing by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In her address during the ceremony, Adeleke described the event as a timely intervention for the residents of the area and the state. Read more
Lagoon School urges parents’ involvement in children’s education (ThisDay)
Members of the management team of Lagoon School, Lekki, Lagos, have appealed to parents to engage actively in their children’s education by asking questions and participating in school seminars offered by counselors and psychologists.
They said this while speaking with THISDAY during the school’s open house, and sent-forth ceremony for the senior secondary three students, organised by those in senior secondary two.

Police in Kenya use tear gas to break up new protests calling for the president to resign (ABC)
Police in Kenya hurled tear gas canisters on Tuesday to break up protests in Nairobi and several other towns and cities accusing the president of poor governance and demanding his resignation, despite his dismissal of nearly the entire Cabinet last week.
Businesses in Nairobi remained closed for fear of a repeat of the looting that occurred during demonstrations last week, when protesters stormed into Parliament and several were killed by police.
Demonstrators blocked major roads including the highway to Namanga on the outskirts of Nairobi, where they lit bonfires on Tuesday morning. Demonstrations were also reported in the towns of Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret. Read more
Elizabeth Bay Productions gets financing, WestEnd Films first-look deal (THR)
Elizabeth Bay Productions (EBP), whose principal is publicity firm DDA founder Dennis Davidson and whose team includes executive producer/producer Grant Hill, known for his collaborations with director Terrence Malick and the Wachowskis on various The Matrix films, has struck a financing agreement with FilmHedge and entered a first-look deal with U.K.-based sales company WestEnd Films.
The new partnership with Atlanta-based finance platform FilmHedge will provide financing for the production house’s film and TV slate. EBP’s film projects include The Dimona Affair, a whistle-blower story inspired by true events, written by Fred Schepisi (Six Degrees of Separation, Roxanne, A Cry in the Dark) from a story by Morris Rosmarin. Schepisi will also direct, with Jeff Wilbusch (Unorthodox) playing the male lead and producing alongside Schepisi, Simon Moseley and Davidson. Read more

Gambia upholds ban on female genital mutilation (DW)
Gambian lawmakers on Monday upheld a 2015 ban on female genital mutilation (FGM), despite pressure from religious traditionalists in the West African country.
Lawmakers rejected a controversial bill, introduced earlier in 2024, that sought to enshrine “female circumcision” as a religious and cultural practice.
Following months of heated debate, legislators ended the bill’s chances by rejecting all its clauses and blocking any further vote. Read more

Reports in Italy claim that PSG doesn’t want to spend more than €100m for Super Eagles and Napoli ace Victor Osimhen, but according to Il Corriere dello Sport, the Partenopei hope to reach an agreement with the Ligue 1 side within the next ten days.
Osimhen is expected to leave Napoli this summer, but the Partenopei are still waiting for a club willing to match the striker’s €130m clause.

Mexico, Lozano part ways after early Copa América exit (ESPN)
Mexico has parted ways with men’s team manager Jaime “Jimmy” Lozano following an underwhelming group stage exit from the Copa America, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, the FMF said that Lozano turned down a demotion to stay on as staff for a new head coach.
“Jaime Lozano was offered, along with his coaching staff, a contract until 2030, in which during 2024-2026 they will accompany a more experienced head coach towards our World Cup, and later it would be Jaime himself who would retake the reins of head coach in the 2026-2030 process,” the FMF said.
