Court remands 2 over alleged fraud, cyber crime

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, ordered the remand of Kayode Seun,19, and Godwin Festus,22, in the Ado-Ekiti correctional centre over alleged fraud and cyber crime.

The defendants, whose addresses were not given, are being tried for alleged conspiracy, fraud, cyber crime, unlawful possession of car and bribery.

The police prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 22 at 10:30 a.m., in Ikere-Ekiti.

According to him, the defendants committed the offences of conspiracy, fraud, cyber crime and having possession of one Mercedes Benz CLA car reasonably suspected to be stolen.

Oriyomi said that the defendants were also being tried for attempting to bribe police officers with the sum of N485,000.

He said the offences are punishable under Section 8 and 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act, 2006, Section 13 and 14 of the Cyber Crime Act, 2015 and Section 430 and 98 (A)(b) of the Criminal Code Act, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendants in a correctional centre, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The pleas of the defendants were however not taken.

Counsel to the defendants, Iyanu Olumuagun, who earlier stood for the defendants later withdrew her appearances for personal reasons.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Olarewaju Owoleso, ordered the remand of the defendants in the correctional centre, pending the issuance of legal advice.

He adjourned the case untill June 6 for mention.(NAN)
