Rampaging cultists hack 3 to death in Lagos (Punch)
Tension has begun to brew among residents and business owners in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State after three residents were killed in a suspected cultists’ attack.
PUNCH Metro learnt on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Sunday and Monday. The victims were identified simply as Agbara, Butcher and a plumber whose identity had yet to be ascertained.
It was gathered that Agbara was attacked and killed in the Lagos Street area of the community on Sunday. (Read more)
4 arrested over ₦500m work visa scam in Lagos (TheNation)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four individuals linked to a massive visa scam amounting to ₦500 million, targeting over 100 unsuspecting Nigerians with false promises of overseas employment.
The suspects — Blessing Wefsutu (27), Chineye Christian (36), Archibong Udeme Ifereke (23), and Maurine Peter (25) — were all identified as staff of an education consultancy firm based in the Ago Okota area of Lagos.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) following a transfer of the case from the Ago Okota Division, where the initial complaints were lodged. Lagos construction site sealed after crane crushes worker to death (Punch)
The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed off a construction site operated by Monterosa Construction Company in the Lekki area, where a worker, Rotimi Adesina, was killed by a crane.
PUNCH Metro gathered on Sunday that the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday while Adesina, believed to be the crane operator, was working on-site. He was reportedly rushed to the Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase One but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.
Confirming the tragedy in a statement exclusively obtained by PUNCH Metro on Sunday, the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, disclosed that the site had been sealed and an abatement notice served to avoid any further fatal incident pending the completion of a full investigation. Footballer hacked to death during training session in Lagos (Punch)
A footballer identified simply as Kamo has been hacked to death by unidentified assailants in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred on Thursday morning while the deceased was observing his routine training session at a popular local football ground known as “Centre Field”.
It was gathered that the late Kamo, who is a goalkeeper for a grassroots team, B-Unit Football Club, had finished his morning drills when some male adults accosted him on his way home. (Read more)
Court dismisses Iyabo Ojo’s N1bn defamation suit against Lizzy Anjorin (Vanguard)
A Lagos High Court sitting in Osborne, Ikoyi, has dismissed a N1 billion defamation suit filed by Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo against her colleague, Lizzy Anjorin.
Justice Olabisi Akinlade, who presided over the matter, held that the suit was incompetent due to procedural defects and a fundamental flaw in the originating processes. The court also ordered Ojo’s lawyer, Dr. Olabimpe Ajegbomogun, to pay N500, 000 to Anjorin’s lawyer, Barrister Ademola Olabiyi.
The case, marked LD/ADR/5292/2023, was instituted by Iyabo Ojo, who sought N1 billion in damages for alleged defamation. However, Anjorin’s counsel, Olabiyi, filed a preliminary objection, arguing that the suit failed to comply with mandatory pre-action protocols required under the Lagos State High Court Civil Procedure Rules. Drug kingpin nabbed as NDLEA uncovers drugs hidden in microwaves (Punch)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos have arrested a drug suspect, Ezenwegbu Chike, and recovered 23 parcels of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 11.3 kilograms, hidden in microwaves imported from Thailand.
The illicit substance, which came in as part of a consolidated cargo via Ethiopian Airlines from Bangkok through Addis Ababa, was intercepted on Monday, July 7, following credible intelligence.
A statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said the suspect, Chike, was arrested in connection with the consignment. (Read more)
2 men docked for alleged damage, theft of iron rods worth N1.01m (Vanguard)
Two men, Gbadamosi Adamu and Abdulrasaq Sanni, on Thursday appeared before an Ikorodu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly damaging an uncompleted building and stealing iron rods worth over N1.01 million.
Adamu, 20, and Sanni, 30, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and malicious damage. They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecutor, Asp Aminu Isaac, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 4 at the Radio Itamaga area of Ikorodu, Lagos. (Read more)
Man remanded for illegal firearm possession in Lagos (Punch)
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the remand of a 30-year-old man, Ogunjimi Mayowa, at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre over charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke issued the remand order following Mayowa’s arraignment by the Department of State Services on three counts bordering on conspiracy, unlawful possession of a locally-made pistol and three live cartridges.
At the defendant’s arraignment, the prosecution counsel, Mr. M.O. Bajela, informed the court of the pending charges and requested that they be read to the defendant for his plea to be taken. (Read more)
