CSOs protest in Lagos over high cost of living (Channels)
Members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Monday trooped to the streets of Lagos to protest the high cost of living and soaring food prices.
Videos on social media showed protesters under a human rights group identified as the “Take It Back Movement” carrying placards with various inscriptions in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos State.
The Lagos Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade had on Sunday cautioned the protesters against disrupting commercial activities. But during the demonstration hours later, police officers were spotted at the protest grounds providing security. The protesters took their grievances as far as the Maryland axis of the state. Fire destroys 50 shops at Kano market (Punch)
A midnight fire has destroyed over 50 shops and property worth N150 million at Yan Katako Market Rijiyar Lemu area of Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
Speaking to newsmen, the chairman of the market, Alhaji Mamuda Abdullahi, explained that the blaze started at about 1am on Monday.
He pointed out that the conflagration destroyed over 50 shops containing plywood, foam, spray machine, chairs, and other carpentry tools. Read more
Biafra: Court fixes March 19 to decide Nnamdi Kanu’s bail (Tribune)
Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed March 19, 2024, for a ruling in the application by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, seeking to be admitted to bail in the terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
Justice Nyako fixed the date on Monday after taking arguments from Kanu’s new counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, for bail for his client and Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), who stood for the Federal Government and objected to the granting of bail to the IPOB leader.
While Chief Awomolo took over the case from David Kaswe (SAN) from the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja for the prosecution, Kanu also engaged a new team of lawyers led by Pam Ejiofor and Alloy Ejimakor, who took over the case from Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Ifeanyi Ejiofor, without adducing any reason for the change. Scores killed as rival bandit groups clash in Zamfara (Leadership)
Scores of bandits have been killed as a result of a heavy gun fight between two rival groups around Hayin Alhaji to Munhaye forest of Tsafe local government area in Zamfara State.
A local, Mohammed Sanda, said that the two bandit groups engaged in a supremacy battle on Saturday, leading to many casualties from both camps.
According to Sanda, a group of bandits from the neighbouring Katsina State had invaded some communities in Zamfara State with the intention of kidnapping the residents. Read more

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has urged President Bola Tinubu to roll out economic policies that will ameliorate the hardship currently being experienced in the country.
The Council, which is the apex youth body in Nigeria, through its President, Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, said it was worried about the rising cost of living, noting that many students are finding it difficult to feed.

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has condemned the brutal assassination of Mr Silas Onyima, the President-General of Umuoji Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Soludo however directed the State security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to apprehend the culprits and ensure swift prosecution of those responsible of criminal act to deter future recurrences.

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has asked the 11 newly inaugurated justices of the Supreme Court to expect more criticism and verbal assaults over their judgements.
Justice Ariwoola, who made the declaration on Monday shortly after administering the oath on the justices, charged them to be guided by their conscience and guide and filter every thought.

A pregnant woman who was pushed off Arthur’s Seat by her husband helped to jail her murderer with her last words.
Fawziyah Javed, 31, and her unborn child died after Kashif Anwar shoved her over the cliff in Edinburgh in September 2021.
Anwar, 29, denied murder but he was found guilty last April.

Lebanese security officials say Israel has targeted eastern Lebanon for the first time since the war on Gaza began in October last year.
At least two people were killed on Monday after Israeli military planes carried out three air strikes on the outskirts of Buday village near Baalbek, a Hezbollah stronghold in the Bekaa Valley about 100km (62 miles) from the Israel-Lebanon border.

A top Ukrainian official says Russia may soon be invited to participate in a peace summit on Ukraine’s terms.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, made the statement during a press conference on Sunday. Ukraine is already participating in a summit to discuss a vision for peace in Switzerland, though Russia will not be in attendance.
“There can be a situation in which we together invite representatives of the Russian Federation, where they will be presented with the plan in case whoever is representing the aggressor country at that time will want to genuinely end this war and return to a just peace,” Yermak said Sunday. Taliban release 84-year-old Austrian man detained in Afghanistan last year (VOA)
An 84-year-old Austrian man who traveled to Afghanistan last year and was arrested there was released by the country’s Taliban rulers, the Austrian government said Sunday.
The Austrian Foreign Ministry in a statement identified the man as Herbert Fritz and said he arrived in Doha, Qatar from Afghanistan on Sunday afternoon. If necessary, he will be given medical treatment before continuing on to Austria, it said.
A spokeswoman for the Austrian Foreign Ministry told the Associated Press that the man had been held in a prison in Kabul. Read more
