The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has identified low immunisation coverage, poor sanitation, and malnutrition as the primary causes of the resurgence of polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases in Lagos State.
Chief of the UNICEF Lagos Field Office, Ms Celine Lafoucriere, disclosed this on Tuesday during the 2025 World Immunisation Week and Advocacy Walk for Polio, organised by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with UNICEF.
The advocacy walk mobilised policymakers, community leaders, influencers, youth advocates, development partners, and hundreds of citizens to raise awareness and inspire urgent action to end polio and strengthen routine immunisation. Read more

Soldier to die by hanging for killing lover (DailyTrust)
A General Court Martial sitting at the Headquarters, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, has sentenced one Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for killing his girlfriend, identified as Miss Hauwa Ali.
The court martial, presided over by the President of the court, Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari, also sentenced one Private Abubakar Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment for robbery that was committed at a popular Mall in Enugu.
Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Jonah Unuakhalu, told journalists in Abuja that the sentences were handed to the two culprits following the conclusion of their trials for murder and robbery respectively. Read more

US promises support for Nigeria’s war against drug trafficking (ThisDay)
The United States has promised to support the ongoing war against drug trafficking and illicit substance abuse in the country.
The promise was given on Monday by the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), which commended the operational successes of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and efforts of its Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd).

Commissioner Adam Silver and Byron Spruell, the NBA’s president of league operations, both acknowledged Monday that the league is having discussions with the NBA Players Association and broadcast partner NBC over replacing the All-Star Game’s current format with an international competition next season.
“Our All-Star Game will return to NBC next season in the middle of their coverage of the Winter Olympics,” Silver told The Athletic. “Given the strong interest we’ve seen in international basketball competitions, most recently in last summer’s Olympics in Paris, we’re discussing concepts with the players association that focus on NBA players representing their countries or regions instead of the more traditional formats that we’ve used in the past.” Read more
