Customs collects N1.172t at Apapa Port in 2023, decorates promoted officers (Guardian)
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) collected N1.172 trillion in revenues from Apapa Port in 2023.
Area Controller of the NCS at the ports, Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba, made the declaration on Wednesday in Lagos during the decoration of newly-promoted officers and men of the command.
He noted that the officers decorated on Wednesday contributed immensely to attaining the revenue collection. Read more

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has sacked the boards of Union Bank, Polaris Bank and Keystone Bank.
The apex bank in a statement signed by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Sidi Hakama, said “this action became necessary due to the non-compliance of these banks and their respective boards with the provisions of Section 12(c), (f), (g), (h) of Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, 2020.”
It added that “the Bank’s infractions vary from regulatory non-compliance, corporate governance failure, disregarding the conditions under which their licenses were granted, and involvement in activities that pose a threat to financial stability, among others.” Read more
Supreme Court decides Kano, 6 other Gov’ship disputes Friday (Leadership)
The Supreme Court has fixed Friday, January 12, 2024, for judgement in the Kano State governorship election appeal.
Also, barring last-minute change of plan, the apex court will deliver judgement in six other governorship disputes before it.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of a new board and management team for the National Hajj Commission (NAHCOM).
The appointment is pending confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

The Headquarters, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has arrested two of its personnel captured in a trending video involved in torturing a civilian.
A statement from the Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, said Army viewed with dismay the unprofessional conduct of the officers involved in the act.
The 6 Division stated that the Nigerian Army, which believes in the respect of the citizenry, would not condone any form of infraction from its erring personnel. Read more

Alabama can carry out nation’s 1st execution using nitrogen gas, judge rules (NBC)
Alabama will be allowed to put an inmate to death with nitrogen gas later this month, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, clearing the way for what would be the nation’s first execution under a new method the inmate’s lawyers criticise as cruel and experimental.
U.S. District Judge R. Austin Huffaker rejected Alabama inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith’s request for an injunction to stop his scheduled Jan. 25 execution by nitrogen hypoxia. Smith’s attorneys have said the state is trying to make him the “test subject” for an untried execution method, and are expected to appeal the decision.
The question of whether the execution by nitrogen gas can ultimately proceed could end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. Read more

Food Network star Darnell ‘SuperChef” Ferguson was arrested on multiple charges, including strangulation, burglary and terroristic threatening in Kentucky, according to multiple news reports citing officials.
On Tuesday, Ferguson, 36, was booked into the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections, online booking records show. WHAS 11, WDRB and Courier Journal report that in addition to the aforementioned charges, Ferguson also faces misdemeanour charges of assault, menacing, criminal mischief and theft-receipt of a stolen credit or debit card.

1 dead, 5 abducted after Somali al-Qaeda affiliates attack UN helicopter (Fox)
Fighters with al-Qaida’s East Africa affiliate al-Shabab attacked a United Nations helicopter that made an emergency landing Wednesday in territory controlled by the extremists in Somalia, killing one passenger and abducting five others, officials said.
The minister of internal security of Galmudug state in central Somalia, Mohamed Abdi Aden Gaboobe, told The Associated Press by phone that the helicopter made the landing due to engine failure in Xindheere village. He said six foreigners and one Somali national were on board and one was shot dead while trying to escape. One was missing.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed that “there was an incident involving a U.N.-contracted helicopter that took place today in Galmudug.” He said that for the safety of those on board he would not provide other details except to say that “response efforts are underway. … We’re fully engaged on the issue and trying to resolve it.” Read more

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface will begin rehabilitation on his groin injury after undergoing a successful surgery, the club has confirmed.
The injury forced Boniface out of Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON squad and was replaced by Terem Moffi on Tuesday after he sustained the injury during their training camp in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
