Ahead elections, Customs intercepts military wares, explosive-making chemical in Lagos(Leadership)
Ahead of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria, the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has intercepted military camouflage and 450 units of explosive-making chemical also known as carbide, smuggled into the country.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, the acting Controller of the Unit, Hussein Ejibunu, said the 68 pieces of smuggled military wares were seized in January and 47,750 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), worth N517.9 million.
Ejibunu, a Deputy Comptroller of Customs, also handed over seized 2,135 wraps of marijuana weighing 1,163 kg to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), saying that the Unit was out to tackle the economic menace caused by recalcitrant importers and agents.Read more
Ipaja community cries out over encroachment on recreation centre (Guardian)
Residents of ‘B. Street’ in Shagari Low Cost Housing Estate, lpaja, Lagos, have asked the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to intervene over illegal conversion of a popular recreational centre in the community into a housing project by some developers.
They alleged that the community was not consulted in the conversion of the location, which served as a recreational spot for youths for over four decades.
Residents thereby demanded that the authority should halt ongoing efforts to convert the centre into other uses.The community said a major cause for concern is that such change of use will deprive many of the youths and the elderly of access to sporting activities, which might impact negatively on health conditions and community spirit in the area.Read more
Police parade 2 ex–convicts, other for robbery (Guardian)
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested two ex-convicts for robbing a passer-by on Olowopopo Way, beside Otedola Bridge.
The suspects, 33-year-old Osazee Festus; 23-year-old Martial Anthony, both ex-convicts, and Osinachi Nwachukwu were arrested.
The suspects were arrested in the early hours of Saturday, February 4, 2023.
According to the Lagos State Police Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the trio, wielding a cutlass, accosted their victim at about 6:20 a.m. and dispossessed him of his Samsung A19 mobile phone. Read more
Abdulwahab Babankanti declare Ogboni leader wanted for displaying gun (Guardian)
The Lagos State Police Command has declared wanted one President of the supreme body of Ogboni Association Worldwide (Oba Ogboni Agbaye), Tajudeen Olanrewaju Bakare, who was caught on video wielding a gun in broad daylight.
Following the emergence of a video earlier this week showing him wielding a pump action rifle and threatening public peace, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), working on actionable intelligence, carried out a sting operation on the residence of the man in the Surulere area of the state.
Found in the suspect’s residence were three pump action rifles, one Beretta pistol magazine, one expended 9mm ammunition, one expended and three live cartridges and a picture frame of the suspect. Read more
EFCC arrests Gbajabiamila over fraud as court adjourns case (Guardian)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, arrested 63-year-old Suleiman Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila was last year arraigned on a two-count charge for defrauding a United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Lateef Adeyemo, of the sum of N 30 million.
According to the charge, Gbajabiamila, who presented himself as an estate agent in 2021, fraudulently collected and converted to his own use, the money meant to purchase a two-bedroom flat for Adeyemo between September and October 2021. Read more
Again, EFCC arraigns social media influencer, Adeherself (Punch)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday re-arraigned a social media influencer and comedienne, Adedamola Adewale alias Adeherself, for alleged N7.9 million internet fraud.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adewale was charged alongside two others at large, on a three-count of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretences, attempt to obtain money by false pretences and retention of proceeds of criminal conduct.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.The EFCC counsel, Mr Samuel Daji, informed the court that the case was re-assigned, and urged it to remand the defendant pending commencement of trial. Read more
Lagos businessman defrauds customer of N2.5m(Punch)
A businessman, Joseph Friday, has been arraigned at the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, for allegedly defrauding his customer, Peter Onuorah, of N2.5m around Okobaba Sawmill, in the Ebute Metta area of the state.
Friday was arraigned on two counts of theft.The police prosecutor, Orobosa Osagie, told the court that the defendant committed the crime sometime in March 2022, adding that Onuorah paid him the N2.5m to supply him with timber. According to Osagie, the offences are punishable under Sections 341(1) and 287(9) (b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015. Read more

A 21-year-old man, Femi Gbenga, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos State, for allegedly beating a man, Bola Adesanya, to a pulp in the state.
Gbenga, who is facing three counts bordering on the breach of peace, causing injury and threat to life preferred against him by the police, was accused of using a stone and bottle to hit Adesanya till he lost consciousness.

Hoodlums remanded for murder, rape in Lagos(Punch)
A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ebute Metta, Lagos State, has ordered the remand of two suspected area boys, Idris Ayinla, aka Western, and Gbenga Taiwo, aka Sooku, for alleged murder, rape and armed robbery, in the Oyingbo and Yaba areas of the state.
The Lagos State Police Command arraigned the defendants before Magistrate Folarin Williams on eight counts of attempted murder, murder, rape and armed robbery on Friday.
The defendants were accused of stabbing one Ojo Emmanuel to death with a knife on September 22, 2022, around 1:15 pm at Kano Street bus stop, Herbert Marcauley Way, in the Yaba area of the state. Read more
Father defiles 10-year-old daughter in Lagos (Punch)
Following the arrest of a lecturer over an allegation of having unlawful sexual intercourse with his biological daughter in Lagos State, the state Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has decried the rise in such cases in the state.
The Executive Secretary for the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement, said the agency got to know about the development when the victim’s mother reported the case to officials of the agency.

A 31-year-old man, Atandare Idunnu, was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s court sitting at Ogba, Lagos State, for unlawfully possessing a locally-made pistol.

A man, Ibrahim Dauda, has allegedly killed his brother, Tunde, during a fight over N1,000 at their residence on Amusa Street, off Community Road, in the Obadore area of Igando, Lagos State.

Man arraigned for burning wife, brother-in-law to death (Punch)
A prosecution witness, Mrs Uche Uwalaka, on Monday told a Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, that a murder suspect, Benjamin Ogudoro, who allegedly burnt his wife and brother-in-law to death, has caused her family a lot of pain.
Uwalaka, sister to Chinyere Ogundoro and Ifeanyi Edeziem who were burnt to death by her husband, Benjamin said her mother is late and currently in the mortuary as a result of pain, and shock arising from the incident of the loss of her two children on the same day.
The witness, who was led in evidence in chief by the Director of Public Prosecution, Dr Babajide Martins, stated that the action of the defendant has led her only brother’s wife to become a widow and her late sister’s four children stranded.
Housewives, school teacher arrested for drug trafficking (Punch)
Operatives of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the NAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State, have arrested a pregnant woman, Mrs Sylvester Onome, after 800 grams of skunk were allegedly discovered concealed in two small radio sets she was sending to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect was arrested on Monday, January 30.
“Another housewife, Mrs Okpara Chizoba, was arrested at her residence at 37, Obashola Street, Ijesha, Lagos, on Friday, January 27, following the seizure of 300g of skunk hidden in a bag of crayfish she was sending to Dubai, UAE, through a freight agent. Read more
Lagos tenant escapes after storing hemp, landlord jailed (Punch)
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sentenced a 51-year-old landlord, Saheed Ojomu, to five-year imprisonment for allowing his tenant to use his shop to warehouse cannabis.
Justice Daniel Osiagor handed down the sentence to the convict after he changed his not-guilty plea to guilty.
The convict was arrested over the banned substance found in one of his shops on March 31, 2017, by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Lout drags Lagos conductor to death over ‘‘police fee’’ (Punch)
A lout, Daramola Olanrewaju, has reportedly caused the death of a bus conductor, identified only as Michael, while trying to collect a N500 ‘police fee’ from him at Ketu Bus Stop, Lagos State.
Olanrewaju was allegedly working for some policemen attached to the Ketu Police Station when the incident happened on Friday, February 3.

Police arrest Yoruba Nation protesters, seize food items (Punch)
No fewer than 10 Yoruba Nation agitators have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command over an alleged plan to embark on a protest in the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a post on Twitter, said the agitators were arrested while setting up a camp for the protest in the Alausa area of the state.
Noting that an investigation had commenced into the case which was transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba, Hundeyin said the command would not tolerate any form of lawlessness in the state. Read more
