The bustling city of Lagos is set to come alive with a week-long celebration of Nigeria’s independence and cultural heritage. Kukuruku Inc., in partnership with Freedom Park Lagos, has announced the commencement of the annual Freedom Party Week, scheduled to run from September 27 to October 1.
The event, which coincides with Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary and the 14th year since the establishment of Freedom Park, promises a diverse array of cultural experiences. Visitors can expect live music performances, dynamic dance routines, compelling drama presentations, and thought-provoking spoken word events.
According to a statement by the event’s project coordinator, Raymond Bola Browne, “This year’s Freedom Party Week is not just a celebration, but a reflection of our nation’s journey and our continuous strive for liberty and unity. It’s a platform for artists, thinkers, and leaders to express themselves and inspire others, fostering a sense of community and national pride.”
The festivities will kick off on Friday, September 27, with performances by DJ Browne, Kunle Ayo and Dede Mabiaku on the Big Stage. The following days will see a mix of established and upcoming artistes across various genres, including poetry, spoken word and music. Notable performances include Mahogany, Sage, Abbey Trombone and Sikiru Lemon.
A highlight of the event will be the Fashion Runway by AOAFRIQ Clothing on September 30th, followed by a Fashion/Drama presentation by Crown Troupe/Royal Bards. The celebration will culminate on Independence Day, October 1st, with a special Children’s Party and performances by Tenstrings Music Institute.
Browne emphasised the significance of the event, stating, “As we revel in the arts and the expression of freedom, we also remember the importance of this occasion. It’s a time to look back at our past with respect and forward to our future with hope.”
Freedom Park, once a colonial-era prison, now stands as a symbol of liberty and cultural expression in Lagos. The Freedom Party Week aims to showcase this transformation and celebrate the progress Nigeria has made as a nation.
The organisers have extended an open invitation to all Nigerians and visitors to join in the festivities. With its rich programme and historical significance, the Freedom Party Week is poised to be a memorable celebration of Nigerian culture, unity, and independence.
