Doctors threaten nationwide strike over unresolved demands (Nation)
Medical services across Nigeria may face a total shutdown by Thursday as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to begin a nationwide strike if the federal government fails to meet its demands before the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum.
The association, which represents doctors nationwide, issued the warning over unresolved issues surrounding remuneration and welfare.
NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, stated that the association would be left with no option but to withdraw services if its demands are not met by July 23. Read more
Supreme Court orders retrial of man sentenced to death (Guardian)
The Supreme Court has affirmed the lower court judgment ordering a retrial of a man, Yahaya Ibrahim, convicted and sentenced to death for culpable homicide by a Kano State High Court.
The five-man panel of justices, in a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, dismissed Yahayaโs appeal against the Appeal Courtโs decision for lacking in merit.
The apex court held that the Appeal Court sitting in Kaduna was โright in so holding and ordering that the appellant be made to face a fresh trial to offer his plea since his plea was not taken on the amended charge.โ Read more

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has strongly criticised UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, over her recent comments on Nigerian citizenship, describing her remarks as a display of โutter ignoranceโ of the countryโs legal provisions.
Falanaโs reaction followed Badenochโs statement during an interview where she claimed, โI canโt give it [Nigerian citizenship] to my children because Iโm a woman,โ and described acquiring Nigerian citizenship as โvirtually impossible.โ
In a rebuttal on Monday, Falana cited the Nigerian Constitution, clarifying that Badenochโs children are Nigerian by birth, regardless of their place of birth or their motherโs gender. Read more

Less than 30 days to the commencement of the highly anticipated rollout of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas trucks by the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, industry stakeholders have signalled an alignment with the refineryโs plan to begin direct fuel distribution to marketers and critical sectors of the economy from August 15, Sunday PUNCH reports.
Checks revealed that as of Friday, no fewer than 25 marketers had signed up with Dangote refinery for the direct fuel distribution deal.

At least 19 people have died and 164 were injured after a Bangladeshi air force training jet crashed into a school campus in the capital, Dhaka.
Footage from Milestone School and College in the northern suburb of Uttara shows a huge fire and thick smoke, after the aircraft slammed into a two-storey building.
The armed forces said in a statement on Facebook that the F-7 jet experienced a mechanical fault after taking off for a training exercise just after 13:00 local time (07:06 GMT). The pilot was among those killed, the air force added. Read more

Jake Larson, the 102-year-old veteran who garnered over a million followers online as “Papa Jake,” died over the weekend, his family confirmed.
“Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young,” McKaela Larson, Papa Jake’s granddaughter, wrote in a post on his TikTok. “Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end.โ

One of the Tunisian athletes involved in a road accident on Saturday night, Saai Imen, rose from her sick bed, yesterday, to win a gold medal at the ongoing third CAA African U-18/U-20 Championships in Abeokuta.
Saai Imen was among the five Tunisian athletes (one male and four female) that were involved in the road accident on Saturday evening while returning to the Games village at the Redeemed Camp along the Lagos- Sagamu expressway.
The athletes were initially stabilised at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, before being moved for further and more advanced treatment at a specialised medical facility in Lekki, Lagos. Read more
