Drug Trafficking: NDLEA arrests Italy-bound physically challenged man at Lagos airport (DailyTrust)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 53-year-old physically challenged man, Ehiarimwiam Osaromo Emmanuel, at the departure hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos, for drug trafficking.
Ehiarimwiam was arrested on Sunday, August 28, on his way to Italy, via Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.
The spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday in Abuja that Emmanuel, an indigene of Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, concealed 5,000 tablets of Tramadol 225mg in his luggage.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect is a frequent traveller who often travels with lots of bags containing mainly food items, body cream, hair attachment and drinks. Read more
Unkempt Man found on parked aircraft, arrested in Lagos airport (Channels)
An unkempt man has been found at a parked aircraft in Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital.
The man, said to be middle-aged and unconscious, was found on Sunday morning during a pre-flight inspection at the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2.
Channels Television gathered that the suspected stowaway was arrested and taken in for interrogation.
In a statement issued by the airline, the aircraft last operated Abuja-Lagos at 7.30 pm on September 3, 2022 and was securely parked at the apron following a post-flight inspection. Read more

At the moment, Difas Schools based in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos, is the target of a negative campaign, blackmail and attack from a faceless group known as Lizzy Anjorin Warriors Fans.
According to the founder and Director of the school, Taiwo Dimeji Jojolola, the school’s only sin was advertising on Alujo Fm, an online radio station.
Most painful, Jojolola said, is the fact that this whole negative campaign is coming at a time when the school is finally settling down to reap the fruits of its years of hard work, patience and dedication.
She began: “Recently, it came to our notice after we placed an advert on an online radio station known as Alujo Fm that an attempt was being made to defame the character and integrity of Difas Schools on social media. Getting to the roots of the matter, we realised that the threat was coming from a group called Lizzy Anjorin Warriors”. Read more

Researchers have said that respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are the main causes of hospitalisation in Lagos State.
This was revealed by Dr. Obuks Ejohwomu (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Nwabueze Emekwuru.
The duo said this during a two-day event organized by the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (a division of NSE) in collaboration with the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Manchester Branch, UK and the SQUARE project led by the University of Manchester and CAR-NASRDA, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

Lagos Commandant says passage of PCN bill will benefit country (Guardian)
The Lagos Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), Mr Kuforiji Williams, on Sunday appealed to the nation’s legislators to expedite action on the passage of the PCN bill.
Williams, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said the passage, and its assent would put members of PCN in a better position to contribute effectively to ensure the safety of Nigerians.
He said the PCN, now a non-governmental organisation, would be able to do more if the bill becomes law.
Williams said that given the present situation of the country, there was the need to mobilise more men into the nation’s security architecture. Read more
Terrorists attack Borno mosque, kill Imam, 3 others (DailyTrust)
Terrorists have attacked a mosque in Borno, killing the Chief Imam of Gima and three other worshipers.
The attack, which occurred on Friday, also left many people injured as the terrorists invaded Ngulde community of Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
Daily Trust gathered that the terrorists, numbering about 20, launched the attack early in the morning on Friday by opening fire on worshippers who had finished their Fajir prayers at the Mosque.
The terrorists also looted livestock and foodstuff and set ablaze two vehicles in Ngulde community, which is located at some part of Sambisa forest in the state. Read more
2 bodies recovered from Lekki building collapse (Punch)
Emergency responders have recovered two dead bodies from the rubbles of a building that collapsed in the early hours of Sunday in Lekki, Lagos State.
Zonal Coordinator South West, National Emergency Management Agency, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said this to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.
Farinloye said the seven-storey building under construction collapsed at Oba Idowu Oniru Street, Lekki.
He said operations were ongoing to rescue the remaining trapped persons under the rubbles. Read more

Nwandugo who disclosed this during an interview, in Abakaliki, on Sunday, said he worked seriously for the victory of Dr Edward Nkwegu of the Labour Party, who he said, was the preferred candidate of Mr Elechi.
Recall that Mr Elechi lost the PDP structure to his then deputy Governor, David Umahi, which made him to move his loyalists to Labour Party to back Mr Nkwegu to defeat Umahi, but lost out in the end.

9 dead, 10 injured in Abuja auto crash (Punch)
Nine persons have been confirmed dead and 10 others injured in a fatal auto crash on Yangoji-Abaji road in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The Federal Road Safety Corps spokesperson, Mr Bisi Kazeem, confirmed this in a statement on Sunday.
Kazeem noted that the crash involved a Toyota Hiace Bus with vehicle registration number KTG-450 KQ and Howo Sino truck on the Yangoji-Abaji road at about 06:05am on Sunday.
He added that the crashed bus was coming from Osun State and heading to Katsina State, but unfortunately crashed into a stationary truck. Read more

Hollywood newcomer Barack Obama was awarded an Emmy for narrating his Netflix documentary series Our Great National Parks, the Television Academy has announced.
The former two-term US president had already won a pair of Grammy Awards – for audio versions of his memoirs The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from My Father so he now only needs an Oscar and a Tony to complete the EGOT – an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
According to an Entertainment Weekly tracker, only 17 people have achieved an EGOT, including Mel Brooks, Whoopie Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn and – most recently – Jennifer Hudson.

Fraser takes on his most substantial role in a number of years with Darren Aronofsky’s latest, in which Charlie is slowly eating himself to death while struggling with congestive heart failure. An English teacher who holds online courses (with the camera off), Charlie eats to escape the pain of losing the love of his life, his former night-school student Alan, with whom he began a relationship after leaving his wife and then eight-year-old daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). Over the course of a week, he tries to reconnect with Ellie.
“I developed muscles I did not know I had,” Fraser told journalists at a press conference in Venice on Sunday, ahead of the movie’s world premiere.
“I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating. Belfast misses out on hosting Irish music festival Fleadh Cheoil (BelfastTelegraph)
Belfast has missed out on hosting Ireland’s largest traditional musical festival after organisers confirmed the Fleadh Cheoil will return to Mullingar.
The Northern Ireland capital was in the running to host the annual festival alongside Wexford but next year’s event will take place in Co Westmeath in the Republic.
Mullingar hosted the Fleadh last month with hundreds of thousands attending to enjoy the 150 competitions on show.
This year marked a return for the festival after it had been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Read more
Germany to invest additional 65b euros in new energy, inflation relief plan (Global)
Germany will invest an additional 65 billion euros (dollars) in a new round of measures aimed at easing the sting of inflation and high energy prices for consumers, the country’s governing coalition announced Sunday.
“Germany stands together in a difficult time. As a country, we will get through this difficult time,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a Sunday news conference with leaders from the Greens and the pro-business FDP, the two coalition partners of his center-left Social Democrats.
Among the measures announced Sunday are additional one-time payments to help consumers cover energy costs, a planned price cap on a basic amount of energy consumption for families and individuals, and a successor to the country’s popular “9-euro ticket” for nationwide public transit.
Scholz said he’s “very aware” many Germans are struggling to cope with the rising prices and that the government is prepared to help. “We take these concerns very, very seriously,” he said. Read more
Doping: Commonwealth gold medallist Nwokocha provisionally suspended (Punch)
Nigerian sprinter, Nzubechi Grace Nwokocha, who won gold in the 4x100m relay at this year’s Commonwealth Games, has been provisionally suspended for the use of banned substances, the Athletics Integrity Unit said on Saturday.
Nwokocha, 21, ran the anchor leg in Birmingham last month as Nigeria beat England and Jamaica to take gold.
“The AIU has provisionally suspended Nigerian runner, Nzubechi Grace Nwokocha, for the Presence/Use of Prohibited Substances (Ostarine & Ligandrol) (Article 2.1 and Article 2.2),” the body said in a statement on Twitter.
Ostarine and Ligandrol are both anabolic agents prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Read more

Premier League to review controversial VAR calls against Newcastle and West Ham (ESPN)
The Premier League will review as a priority with Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the refereeing body, two controversial VAR decisions which saw Newcastle United and West Ham United have crucial goals disallowed on Saturday.
Newcastle thought they had scored the 51st minute when Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell put the ball in his own net. But Lee Mason, one of two full-time VARs in the Premier League, advised referee Michael Salisbury to rule out the goal for a foul by Joe Willock on Vicente Guaita.
However, Willock appeared to be pushed into the Palace goalkeeper by Mitchell. The game finished goalless.
West Ham also had a goal chalked off when Jarrod Bowen was penalised for fouling Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy just before Maxwel Cornet scored what would have been a last-minute equaliser. Read more

Max Verstappen claimed a 10th Formula 1 victory of the season in his home Dutch Grand Prix, after a late safety car restart overtake on Lewis Hamilton.
After Valtteri Bottas ground to a halt at Turn 1 on Lap 55 of 72, Hamilton cycled to the lead as Red Bull pitted Verstappen who was required to make a second pitstop to use another compound of Pirelli tyre.
The cars were ordered through the pitlane, with Mercedes electing not to put Hamilton on a fresh set of tyres, but changing George Russell to Softs.
Hamilton restarted on Lap 60 in the lead, with Verstappen behind and Russell in third – but the Dutch driver roared past on the restart to take the lead and pull away for a fourth consecutive win and second in succession at Zandvoort.
Rafael Nadal cruises to 18-0 over Richard Gasquet (TennisHead)
Rafael Nadal is into the fourth round of the US Open after a routine win against perennial adversary Richard Gasquet.
The 22-time Major champion has now beaten Gasquet in all 18 of their tour level meetings stretching back to their first encounter in 2004, Nadal winning 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Moreover, Gasquet has failed to claim a set off Nadal for 13 straight matches now, 34 sets in a row, since their fifth battle at the 2008 Canadian Masters.
