The Kano State Police Command has reiterated the ban on all Durbar activities across the state during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, citing security concerns.

Daily Trust reports that the announcement comes just hours after the Kano Emirate Council issued a circular inviting traditional leaders and their horsemen to participate in the annual Sallah Durbar festivities.

In a statement released on Sunday and jointly issued with sister security agencies, the police congratulated Muslim faithful and law-abiding residents ahead of the Eid celebrations, while urging strict adherence to public safety directives. Read more

23 teenagers terrorising Lagos community to face trial (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday said it would prosecute no fewer than 23 teenagers who were arrested for allegedly terrorising the Ishaga, Awolowo and Ojuwoye markets in the Mushin area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to Hundeyin, the police had received complaints from members of the public that some young persons were terrorising traders and residents alike in the areas. Read more 

Tinubu confers national honour on Bill Gates (Channels)

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates.

The conferment took place on Tuesday in Lagos as part of Gates’ ongoing visit to Nigeria to discuss key health and development initiatives.

The Chief Of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has appealed to the government and people of Benue State to support the military with credible and timely information to end the attack on  innocent citizens of the state by suspected herders and other militia groups.

Oluyede  made the appeal when he met with the  state governor  in  Makurdi, yesterday.

Police arrest dismissed soldier for fraud, impersonation (Guardian)

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended a dismissed soldier, Michael Musa, for alleged impersonation, fraud, and theft within the state.

In a statement issued yesterday, the command disclosed that a case of criminal breach of trust, fraud, and theft was referred from a Magistrate’s Court to Tudun-Wada Police Division on May 27, at about 2:30 p.m.

Three victims reported that on May 12, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a man dressed as a soldier approached a Point of Sale (PoS) shop near Musa Bello Primary School in Bida, deceitfully collected N120,000, and fled.. Read more

First Lady seeks synergy against cervical cancer (Nation)

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday urged development partners, private sector players, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and academic institutions to commit their resources, expertise, and innovation to the national campaign for the elimination of cervical cancer.

Mrs. Tinubu spoke at the official unveiling of the Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria (PECCiN) at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Chinese national couple charged with smuggling crop-killing fungus into US: ‘Potential agroterrorism weapon’ (NYPost)

A Chinese national couple was hit with criminal charges Tuesday for allegedly smuggling a dangerous fungus into the US capable of destroying crops and poisoning humans and livestock.

Zunyong Liu, 34, was caught by US Customs and Border Protection officers attempting to smuggle Fusarium graminearum –  a biological pathogen considered to be “a potential agroterrorism weapon” – into the US via the Detroit Metropolitan Airport last July, according to a criminal complaint filed in a federal court in the Eastern District of Michigan. 

Liu initially made false statements about his visit to the US and his knowledge of the pathogen before admitting to law enforcement that he was bringing the noxious fungus to his girlfriend, 33-year-old University of Michigan lab researcher Yunqing Jian, according to authorities.  Read more

In the ongoing New York trial against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs for sexual assault, trafficking, and racketeering, the rapper’s former assistant has testified that she never told his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura to leave him “in the way I wish I could have.”

The assistant, identified only by her first name of Mia, has been giving evidence over the past days of the trial, alleging that Combs abused her in a plethora of ways over the time she worked for him, including physically, emotionally, and sexually.

Mia claimed in her most recent testimony on June 2nd that “I was never out of his grip,” and that she was expected to have constant communications with Combs at every hour of the day, explaining, “It’s way more complex than that” when questioned by the defence why she didn’t tell her loved ones about the alleged abuse while it was occurring. Ukraine hits Putin’s bridge to Crimea with underwater bomb attack (Independent)

Ukraine has targeted a bridge linking Russia to the occupied Crimean peninsula in the latest long-range attacks against Moscow.

Ukraine’s security services, the SBU, said on Tuesday that it had hit the Kerch road and rail bridge linking Russia and the Crimean peninsula with explosives below the water level.

In a statement, the SBU said it had used 1,100kg of explosives that were detonated early in the morning and damaged underwater pillars of the bridge, which has been a key supply route for Russian forces in Ukraine. Read more

Trapped dog rescued from nearly 30-foot mine shaft (UPI)

Firefighters in Australia came to the rescue of a wayward dog who found his way into a 26-foot-deep mine shaft.

The Country Fire Authority in Victoria said a Labrador named Ted wandered off his owner’s property with a Labradoodle named Penny on Thursday and the dog duo made their way to Pronk Track in Trentham.

Penny was found Monday standing vigil next to the mine shaft that now contained her adoptive brother.

“When we arrived, as you would expect, Penny was quite agitated, but luckily one of our firefighters knew the owners because they lived next door to them,” Trentham Fire Brigade Capt. David Wheeldon said in a news release. Read more 

El Salvador convicts army officers for 1982 killing of 4 Dutch journalists (AlJazeera)

Three former officers in El Salvador’s military have been convicted for the killings of four Dutch journalists during the Central American country’s brutal civil war in 1982.

Former Minister of National Defence Colonel Jose Guillermo Garcia, 91, former police Colonel Francisco Moran, 93, and ex-infantry brigade commander Colonel Mario Adalberto Reyes Mena, 85, were found guilty late on Tuesday by a jury in the northern city of Chalatenango, a lawyer said.

The Diario El Salvador news outlet reported that the three former officers – none of whom was present in court – were sentenced to 15 years in prison each for the killings. Read more

A brace from Rashidat Ajibade was all the Super Falcons of Nigeria needed to earn a comfortable 2-0 victory over the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in a friendly international on Tuesday.

Former world No 5 Max Homa carries own bag at US Open qualifier after split from caddie (Guardian)

Max Homa stood out more than usual on Monday in a US Open qualifier filled with PGA Tour players. He was the only one carrying his own bag.

Homa didn’t have a caddie and didn’t feel like talking about it, regardless of how much attention it was getting on social media.

He and his caddie of two months, Bill Harke, are no longer together, according to a person informed of the split who said only that Harke “lost his job.” Homa himself didn’t offer much insight. Read more 

Alcaraz storms through to semi-final with Musetti (BBC)

Defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz produced a dominant display to beat 12th seed Tommy Paul and reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros.

The second seed needed only 53 minutes to establish a two-set lead, losing only one game in the process.

American Paul offered plenty of resistance during a more competitive third set, but Alcaraz, 22, broke again for a 5-4 lead and quickly wrapped up a 6-0 6-1 6-4 victory. Read more
