Eko Atlantic City ready in October 2019 – LASG (Punch)
The Lagos State Government on Thursday said the phase six of the Eko Atlantic City would be completed in October 2019. The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, stated this in Ikeja during the briefing of his ministry to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration. He said “the Nigeria’s premium rising smart city situated adjacent to Victoria Island” was designed to stand on 10 million square metres of land reclaimed from ocean and had six phases of implementation. He said, “Phase one and two have already been completed with roads, potable water to the World Health Organisation’s standard, fibre optics advanced telecommunication facilities and over 10,000 trees planted the city. Ambode deserves second term, says women’s group (Nation)
The Lagos Women for Akinwunmi Ambode (LAWAA) has urged women to support the second term bid of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. The group said Ambode had demonstrated a clear commitment to effective and proactive governance which had made Lagos an investment magnet and he should be rewarded with a second term. LAWAA convener Chief (Mrs) Kemi Nelson encouraged the women to spread awareness of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) collection, with which they can cast their votes for the incumbent in 2019. Nelson, who is also All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader (South West), spoke at rally held at Ikeja, where members of the association from five Local Government Areas (LGAs) were presented with cash awards. Youths urged to prepare for leadership roles (Punch)
Nigerian youths have been urged to shun divisive tendencies and devote their time and energy towards changing the narrative of the political landscape in the country, especially during the 2019 election. The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Adiza Usman, said this on Thursday in Lagos at the opening of a three-day leadership training programme tagged, ‘The Role of Youths in Building a United Nigeria,’ organised by the United Action for Change. She said, “Youths must demonstrate talents and experience required to take up leadership role and guard against religious and political sentiments that can derail their plans for the country.” Read more
Oba of Lagos cautions Muslims Clerics against Materialism, Donates N25m to Newly Inaugurated Ikoyi-Dolphin Mosque (ThisDay)
The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has called on Lagos Muslim Clerics to reduce their pursuit for money, describing it as an unhealthy religious practice and urged them to focus their attention towards propagating the tenets of Islam to faithful. Akiolu who disclosed this yesterday in Lagos at the Inauguration of the state of the art Ikoyi- Dolphin Community Central Mosque, called on the Chief Imam of the Mosque to set up Arab and Islamic schools in the Mosque for the teaching of the Islamic faith amongst faithful. The Oba who donated N25 million to support the maintenance of the Mosque, appealed for more supports from everyone in order to ensure that the maintenance of the Mosque remains a priority. Read more
Artistes, bikers to embark on PVC campaign (Nation)
Leveraging on the huge attention a retinue of bikers would garner, a group of artistes are embarking on a public campaign on the power of PVC in determining desired leadership. An initiative of BKleff Entertainment, headed by Balogun Akorede, the campaign tagged ‘Power of PVC Ride’ will have celebrities and bikers converge on Saturday May 5, 2018, at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park from where they will touch venues like Ojota Park, University of Lagos, and INEC Office, Yaba, Lagos to submit the ‘Power of PVC Ride Official Letter’. The group will then proceed to Ogun State enroute BABCOCK University, Ogun State University, TASUED and then to the Confluence Hotel in Ijebu-Ode where they will round off the campaign. Read more
Lagos pharmacists blame govt for JOHESU strike (Nation)
The Lagos Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has blamed the Federal Government for the ongoing Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) strike. It said the union’s clamour for better welfare package had been mismanaged by the government. According to the society’s Chairman, Mrs Bolanle Adeniran, at a briefing in Lagos, the root of the strike is the desire for more benefits and privileges. Mrs Adeniran, who spoke on: “Redressing the on-going strike of Health workers in Nigeria”, explained that it was important to understand the cause of agitation. Read more
Water Transportation: Lagos Scales up work on 9 New Jetties, 4 Ferry Routes (Independent)
The Lagos State government on Thursday said work is progressing steadily on the construction of nine jetties with shelter and shoreline protection and channelisation of four new ferry routes as part of efforts to boost water transportation in line with the multi-modal transport policy across the state. Babatunde Adejare, the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, who spoke at a Ministerial Press Briefing, to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration in Alausa, said the projects, upon completion, would transform water transportation thereby contribute to the vision of the current administration to reduce pressure on road infrastructure. Lagos Trade Fair: LCCI receives notice of participation from 25 countries (DailyTrust)
The Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said yesterday that it has received indication of interest from over 25 countries to participate in the 2018 Lagos International Trade Fair (LITF) scheduled to hold between November 2, and 11, 2018. Besides, the chamber also announced a ban on musical instruments and hawking at this year’s edition as it launched LIFF website to enable online booking and payment. Speaking at the media launch of the 2018 edition of LITF in Lagos, LCCI’s chairman Trade Promotion board, Mr. Gabriel Idahosa, listed the 25 countries to include China, Japan, Ghana, Cameroun, Republic of Benin, India, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey, Kenya, Singapore, Jamaica, South Africa, US and UK, adding that over 500,000 visitors, 2,500 local exhibitors and 400 foreign exhibitors are expected at the fair. Drop in power reception caused Lagos substation fire, says TCN (Punch)
A very serious drop in the quantum of electricity taken by power distribution companies in Lagos and the harsh weather condition on Thursday led to the explosion of a power transformer and the resultant fire incident at the Alagbon substation. According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, although the fire has been put out, the inability of the power distribution firms in Lagos to take electricity contributed to the fire outbreak. In a statement issued in Abuja by the General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN, Ndidi Mbah, the company said, “The TCN hereby states that at about 0559hrs of today (Thursday), amidst rainfall and associated heavy lightning, there was very sharp drop in power taken by the Discos in the TCN’s transmission system in Lagos area. LCCI tasks NSE on cheap funds for real sector (Guardian)
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has sought partnership with stakeholders at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in promoting accessibility to cheap funds with long tenors for operators in the real sector. According to the chamber, mobilising capital for investors in the real sector will foster economic growth. The Chamber’s President, Babatunde Ruwase, during a courtesy visit to the NSE on Monday in Lagos, the costs of fund in money market as well as tenor of funds are not in tune with the yearning of investors, especially those with a long term perspective. Road Construction: Comply with Traffic Directives, LASTMA urges Motorists (Independent)
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Thursday appealed to motorists plying routes where major construction works were going on to bear with the government and comply with traffic directive, saying concerted efforts had been put in place to deliver the projects on schedule. Olawale Musa, LASTMA’s General Manager, who stated this after monitoring traffic flow along Lagos-Abeokuta and Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, said the road projects across the state were being implemented to achieve free flow of traffic within the metropolis, and boost economy and commerce. LASTMA to dismiss 5 officials over extortion (Punch)
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has recommended five officials for dismissal over offences bordering on extortion and harassment. While 10 others were reprimanded, 14 were recommended for demotion and 15 others issued letters of warning. LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olawale Musa, in a statement on Thursday, added that three officials were exonerated after thorough investigations. He said, “The affected officers appeared in April before the Personal Management Board (discipline) to defend and make presentation on various actions that bordered on indiscipline against them.” Read more
‘Lagos environmental reform on course’ (Nation)
The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment Babatunde Durosnmi-Etti, has reiterated the State’s commitment to providing the adequate infrastructure required to support the environmental management of the emerging Smart City. Durosimi-Etti, while presenting the report of his ministry over the last one year, acknowledged the role being played by the state’s waste infrastructure provider, Visionscape Sanitation Service (VSS). He noted that with a population of over 22 million residents, providing waste infrastructure is no mean feat, hence, the state’s partner in the quest to build enduring waste management infrastructure, VSS, was making remarkable progress on the job. For instance, he disclosed that VSS is presently constructing the first engineered sanitary landfill in Nigeria, which located in Epe, and has also made marked progress on the Eco Park project. LAGESC arrests 40 sanitation offenders (Nation)
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) yesterday warned traders to stop trading on roads under construction, pedestrian bridges and drainages. Its Executive Secretary, Mrs. Idowu Mohammed, gave the warning after inspecting Oshodi-Apapa Expressway inward Airport Road. Mohammed, who frowned at the obstruction the roadside traders were causing construction workers, motorists and pedestrians, said the agency would not hesitate to destroy their wares and prosecute offenders. She said: “I want to use this opportunity to warn traders to stay away from barricaded portions of the road. They are barricaded to ease ongoing construction exercise and also create passage for pedestrians. But with people displaying their wares on those portions, they make things difficult and constitute public nuisance. Read more

CodeLagos programme expands (Guardian)
As part of the continued drive of the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to train one million Lagos residents to code through the CodeLagos initiative, the State Government has scaled up its coding centres from 193 schools last year to 275 for the new term, including 10 public centres. This is just as the Government announced the opening of the registration portal for the 3rd batch of the Out-of-School programme for interested members of the public from Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, in a statement said the present administration was committed to the vision of the CodeLagos programme geared towards making Lagos State the technology frontier in Africa by empowering people with skills needed to create and take advantage of the opportunities a tech-driven economy proffers.
