Electricity Act fallout: Gencos, Discos rage as states begin tariff cuts (Punch)
More states have announced plans to reduce electricity tariffs in their jurisdictions after the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission issued a new tariff order to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, revising the electricity cost for Band A customers from N209 per kilowatt-hour to N160/kWh, effective August 1, 2025.
This was, however, vehemently opposed by power generation and distribution companies, who claimed that the move may cripple the sector, as the Gencos declared that the industry is indebted to power producers to the tune of over N5tn.
As the Gencos and Discos attacked Enugu State over its move on Monday, the state insisted on its decision, stressing that it followed all required processes to arrive at the new N160/kWh power tariff for Band A consumers. Read more
2 bag prison sentences for cybercrime (Guardian)
The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Damelda Damilola Sodiq and Samuel Paul Osayande to one year imprisonment each for cybercrime.
The duo were arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the Ipaja Command area of Lagos in May and subsequently arraigned on June 27.
During investigations, it was revealed that Sodiq and Osayande had three bank accounts domiciled in United Bank of Africa (UBA), Opay and Moniepoint, as well as several email accounts , which they used to defraud unsuspecting victims. Read more
IGP meets protesting retired police officers in FCT, denies opposing exit from CPS (Sun)
The Inspector-General of Police(IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has met with aggrieved retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force with a promise to address their plight under the Contributory Pension Scheme(CPS).
The IGP, while addressing the retired officers who took their protest to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, expressed empathy for their situation, saying that the issue of poor retirement benefits was a concern for not just retired personnel but serving officers as well.
Egbetokun, who said he has been engaging the government on the matter, said, “We all feel concerned. We empathise with you because we are also going to retire. I have been engaging at the highest level to ensure that something is done to improve the condition of the poor pensioner.” Read more

Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.13 per cent year-on-year in real terms in the first quarter of 2025.
This is according to the latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday.
According to the Bureau, this represented an improvement over the 2.27 per cent growth recorded in the corresponding period of 2024. Read more
Police shoot FCT natives protesting demolition (DailyTrust)
Two natives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) identified as Sunday Danjuma and Jacob Audu have been shot by policemen deployed to quell the protest over demolition of houses in Karsana community of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The Karsana community chairman, Zakari Baba, who confirmed the incident to our reporter, said the police opened fire when the natives whose houses were demolished attempted to force their way into the community.
He said commotion started around 10:am when policemen stationed at the main gate of the community barred natives from entering into village to evacuate their property. Read more

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who rose to fame as the son on 1980s megahit The Cosby Show and had a prolific acting career that included series-regular slots on The Resident and Malcom & Eddie and was a Grammy-winning recording artiste, died Sunday in a drowning accident while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He was 54.
Costa Rican National Police told ABC News that Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia. Police said he died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, after being caught by a high current. He was found Sunday afternoon.
The Associated Press reported that the local police initially reported that Warner “was rescued by people on the beach.” But first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue. Read more

Officer convicted in Breonna Taylor raid gets 33-month sentence (BBC)
A former Kentucky police officer has been sentenced to 33 months in prison after being convicted in connection with a raid that resulted in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, a black woman, in her home.
A federal jury last year found Brett Hankison guilty of violating Taylor’s civil rights by using excessive force. The maximum sentence for the charge was life in prison.
The sentencing comes days after the Trump administration asked the judge to give Hankison a one-day sentence – a position that starkly contrasts with the approach to the case under President Joe Biden. Read more
Man found guilty of murdering couple & dumping their remains in suitcases (LBC)
Yostin Andres Mosquera, 35, has been found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court of murdering civil partners Albert Alfonso, 62, and Paul Longworth, 71, in July last year before dumping their remains in suitcases near Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Mosquera repeatedly stabbed Mr Alfonso, who suffered injuries to his torso, face and neck, while Mr Longworth was attacked with a hammer to the back of his head and his skull shattered.
The double killing, dismemberment and dumping of the remains of the couple was described as “one of the most harrowing murder investigations” a senior police officer has ever dealt with. Read more
