Electricity: Lagos community reject planned migration to Band A (Vanguard)

The residents of Ilasamaja community in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State have petitioned the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKDC), rejecting the planned migration from Band B to Band A. The community has vowed to resist the alleged clandestine move with every legal means at their disposal.

In a petition copied to the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the state Commissioner of Police, among others, the community leaders stated: “We are leaders of all Community Development Associations (CDAs) representing the residents of Ilasamaja, Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State. We have it on good authority that there are sinister plans to forcefully migrate us from Band B to Band A. We reject this plan and will resist it with everything at our disposal. We have already informed our lawyers to be on red alert for any eventuality. Read more

Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday dismissed a N500 million suit filed by a prominent Catholic music composer, Sir Jude Nnam, against singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as KCEE, over allegations of copyright infringement.

Justice Ogundare, who held in his judgement that Nnam failed to prove the alleged infringement of his copyright work, “Som Too Chukwu”, also awarded a punitive cost of N1 million against him.

The plaintiff had joined Five Star Music Limited and Emeka Okonkwo E-Money in the suit. Read more 

Lagos-Calabar expressway: Community accuses govt agencies of alleged illegal diversion (Vanguard)

The indigenous people and residents of Okun Ajah community in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, yesterday, raised the alarm over the alleged illegal diversion of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Expressway through their community by some officials of the Federal and State government agencies.

Members of the community, under the auspices of Okun Ajah Community Development Association, have urged President Bola Tinubu to investigate the alleged illegal diversion, expressing fear that it would lead to the demolition of their houses. Read more

Unidentified lady dumped by roadside in Osun (Tribune)

A yet-to-be-identified lady was found abandoned by the roadside at Olaiya, Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday, suspected to be a victim of ritual sacrifice by individuals believed to be Yahoo boys.

The lady, whose behavior appeared abnormal, sparked suspicion that she may have been used for rituals by her captors.

Unable to speak or recognize people or objects, she was discovered lying helplessly on Asikolaye Street, where she was dumped. Read more

The Lagos State Deputy Governor Babafemi Hamzat has explained how it is working to ensure food sufficiency in the area, saying it partners with other states among other strategies. 

Hamzat was a guest on Channels Television’s special Independence Day programme which was held on Tuesday.

Opposition lawmaker applauds court ruling upholding Rivers LG elections (Independent)

Honourable Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the opposition coalition in the National Assembly, has commended the ruling of the Federal High Court in Rivers State, which declared that the scheduled local government elections in Rivers State on October 5, 2024, must proceed as planned.

Delivering the judgment, Justice I.P.C. Igwe ruled that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the Rivers State Government, and the Governor of Rivers State are constitutionally obligated to ensure that local government elections take place.

The court ordered the relevant authorities to conduct the elections, in line with the Constitution and existing electoral laws, and ensure that local government councils are led by democratically elected representatives. Read more 

Man arraigned over defamation of Plateau governor (DailyTrust)

A 26-year-old man, Samuel Bature, was on Monday arraigned before Justice Cyril Kamal of High Court 8, Jos, on a three-count charge bordering on defamation and cyber-stalking against Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State.

Reading the three-count charge to the defendant, the clerk said, ‘’You Samuel Bature, male, 26 years old together with others, now at large on or about 17/09/2024 at opposite NTA College, Rayfield, Jos South LGA within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, without any lawful or moral justification made and published a defamatory statement against His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and his political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Read more

The royal family will welcome a new baby in the spring, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The late Queen’s granddaughter Princess Beatrice, 36, and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 40, have announced they are expecting a second baby.

The royal baby will be a little brother or sister for the couple’s three-year-old daughter Sienna, and Mr Mapelli Mozzi’s son and Beatrice’s stepson, eight-year-old Wolfie. Read more 

Good Times star John Amos dead at 84 (Fox)

John Amos, who played the father on Good Times, has died. He was 84 years old. 

Amos’ publicist, Belinda Foster, confirmed the news of his death Tuesday to The Associated Press. No other details were immediately available.

One of Amos’ first prominent roles was as the WJM-TV weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He was also frequently on The Tim Conway Comedy Hour, which ran in 1970, before he landed Good Times in 1974. Read more

After various hints of Daniel Day-Lewis returning to acting, the iconic Academy Award-winner has announced that he has officially come out of retirement for the upcoming film, “Anemone”.

The movie, which is currently filming in Manchester and across the North West of England, is set to tackle the various relationships that afflict a family. It’s also set to star Sean Bean, Samantha Morton and Samuel Bottomley alongside Day-Lewis. Notably, Anemone marks the directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis, the actor’s son, with whom he wrote the project.

Barbra Streisand, who starred with Kristofferson in the Oscar-winning 1976 remake of A Star Is Born, paid tribute on Instagram, writing: “The first time I saw Kris performing at the Troubadour club in LA I knew he was something special. Iran launches 200 missiles at Israel and at least 6 killed in suspected terror attack in Tel Aviv (ABC)

At least six people have been killed and nine injured by two gunmen who got off a tram in Tel Aviv and opened fire on passers-by, according to Israeli police.

Police labelled the incident on Tuesday, local time, a terrorist attack but no armed Palestinian factions or other militant groups immediately claimed responsibility. 

Footage broadcast by Israeli television channels showed the two gunmen getting off the train and opening fire on people on the platform. Read more

U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers began their first large-scale strike in nearly 50 years on Tuesday, halting the flow of about half the country’s ocean shipping, after negotiations for a new labor contract broke down over wages.

The strike blocks everything from food to car shipments across dozens of ports from Maine to Texas, in a disruption analysts warned will cost the economy billions of US dollars a day, threaten jobs and potentially stoke inflation.

The International Longshoremen’s Association union, which represents 45,000 port workers, had been negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group for a new six-year contract ahead of a midnight Monday deadline. Read more
