Lagos factory worker kills friend over N300, flees (Punch)
A factory worker, Toheeb Kilani, has gone into hiding after allegedly stabbing his colleague, Emmanuel Ojo, to death during an argument over N300 in the Mushin area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the duo were returning from somewhere when they boarded a motorcycle to Kilani’s residence on Asabi Street, Mushin.
After the motorcyclist conveyed Ojo and Kilani to the destination, he received payments from the friends and gave them N300 change to share between themselves.
However, in the process of sharing the money, it caused an argument that degenerated into a fight. During the scuffle, Kilani brought out a cutter and allegedly used it to stab Ojo in the neck. Read more
NDLEA seizes N194b cocaine in Lagos, arrests 5 (Punch)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Monday busted a major warehouse where 1.8tons of illicit drugs worth over $278, 250,000, an equivalent of about N194, 775,000,000 in street value were seized in a secluded estate in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Monday, said at least four drug barons including a Jamaican and the warehouse manager were arrested in the well coordinated and intelligence led operation that lasted two days across different locations in the state.
Kingpins of the cocaine cartel now in custody include Messrs Soji Jibril, 69, an indigene of Ibadan, Oyo State; Emmanuel Chukwu, 65, who hails from Ekwulobia, Anambra State; Wasiu Akinade, 53, from Ibadan, Oyo State; Sunday Oguntelure, 53, from Okitipupa, Ondo State, and Kelvin Smith, 42, a native of Kingston, Jamaica. 5 arraigned over N40.6m fraud in Lagos (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned five people before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly forging and stealing N40,604,929,73, from a health company in the state.
The defendants, Martins Isuman 41, Alaran Olayinka 23, Malomo Adeola 36, Falilat Babatunde 42 and Patience Ekere 42, were arraigned before Magistrate Mrs T. A. Ojo, on Thursday.
They are facing five-count bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, forgery, stealing and breach of public peace, preferred against them by the police.
The police prosecutor, Supol Francis Igbinosa, told the court that the defendants and others now at large, conspired and committed the alleged offences between January 2019 and July 2022. Read more
Men in court over N100m procurement fraud (Punch)
Two men, Joseph Badmus and Ibrahim Ayodele, were on Tuesday, arraigned before Chief Magistrate Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi of the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over an alleged procurement fraud to the tune of N100m.
The defendants who pretended to be businessmen were facing charges for obtaining by false pretence and fraud.
The prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem, told the court that the defendants, under false pretence, collected the sum of N1.5m from one Elizabeth Agunbiade with the promise of helping her to procure an N100m bank draft.
Akeem said there was an agreement between Agunbiade and the defendants to facilitate the procurement in order to improve her business. Read more
Lagos police detain family of 3, relatives kick (Punch)
A woman, Happiness Liberty, has accused policemen attached to the Igando Police Division of the Lagos State Police Command of detaining and torturing her, her husband, and three children, including an 11-month-old baby.
Happiness, a resident of Igando in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state, alleged that the police tortured them for four days, and kept them without food before their arraignment at the Magistrates’ Court.
She added that injuries were inflicted on her and her children, adding that the police arraigned the family to cover up for the torture.
The mother of three, while narrating the experience in an SOS message titled “Torture and illegal detention of my husband, his siblings myself and my children,” stated that the incident occurred on Sunday evening, September 11, 2022, when a commercial motorcyclist knocked down her husband. Lagos teacher jailed 7 years for fondling student (Punch)
A 31-year-old teacher, Idowu Daniel, was on Monday, sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Ikeja Special Offences Court for sexually assaulting his 16-year-old student within a school premises.
The convict was charged with defilement.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo held that the prosecution failed to establish the charge of defilement against the convict, as the victim failed to show up in court to testify.
She said the confessional statement by the defendant, which was made voluntarily, showed that he sexually assaulted the minor. Read more
Lagos impounds 40 trucks for illegal parking (Punch)
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has impounded 40 trailers, trucks and tankers parked illegally under flyover bridges around the Costain/Iganmu area of the state.
The agency’s General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, in a statement by the spokesperson for the agency, Taofiq Adebayo, on Monday, said the 40 trucks were impounded around Ijora, Costain, Breweries and the Ajegunle Park along Ijora Mobil Road area of Iganmu, adding that the Director of Operations, LASTMA, Peter Gbedemeje, led the operation.
He also noted that the operation was carried out immediately after the expiration of the seven-day removal order served on the defaulters around the area.
The statement read in part, “The level of voluntary compliance was encouraging as majority of the defaulters had already removed their heavy duty vehicles before the commencement of the enforcement operations. Read more
Lagos men arraigned for stealing N655k property (Punch)
Three men, Bankole Ibrahim, Abu Amodu, and Bakare Ali, were arraigned at the Ogba Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing the property of one Olalekan Adebiyi worth N655,000 in the Ikeja area of Lagos State.
The trio, who were charged with two counts by the Nigerian Police, were arraigned before Magistrate F.M Onamusi.
They were said, with others now at large, to have conspired amongst themselves to commit felony to wit stealing and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
According to the police, on August 25, 2022, around 12.55pm, at No.8, Oduduwa Street, in Ikeja, Lagos, the defendants with others at large stole pressing iron and 25 gallons of 25 litres of diesel from the complainant. Read more
NDLEA arrests ex-convict, others for peddling drugs (Punch)
The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency has confirmed the arrest of an ex-convict, Onyeka Madukolu, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, for importing 5.90 kilograms of cocaine concealed in cans of deodorants and ladies’ lip gloss into Nigeria.
The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, said Onyeka, who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in Ethiopia for drug trafficking offences and released from prison in 2020, was again arrested on Friday, September 16, 2022.
Babafemi said the drug dealer was arrested at the Lagos airport on his return from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Addis Ababa, aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
He said, “A search of his luggage revealed that he concealed 5.90kg cocaine inside cans of deodorants and female lip gloss. During preliminary interview, he claimed to have ventured into the drug business to raise fresh capital to kick-start a legitimate business after his release from Ethiopian prison in 2020.’’ Read more
Lagos court sentences Evans, ex-soldier to 21 years imprisonment for kidnapping (Guardian)
A Lagos Special Offences Court, Ikeja , yesterday, sentenced kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans to 21 years imprisonment, for kidnapping a businessman, Slyvanus Ahamonou and collecting $420,000 ransom from his family.
The trial Judge, Oluwatoyin Taiwo, sentenced Evans along with his accomplice, Victor Aduba, an ex-soldier after finding them guilty for kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.
The court found them guilty of a four-count charge, bordering on kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.
The prosecution witnesses, Ahamonou and his wife, Chimebere had on December 17, 2021, testified virtually. They narrated how Evans and his gang kidnapped him on June 23, 2014 on Kara Road off Osolo Way, Ajao Estate, Lagos. Read more
2 arrested for allegedly assaulting policeman in Lagos (Guardian)
The police in Lagos, on Friday, said it arrested two employees of a transport company for allegedly assaulting a policeman on duty.
The Police Public Relations Officers (PRO) in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Friday in a statement.
Hundeyin said that the crime was committed against one Insp. Rowland Uankhehi at 7:00 a.m. on Friday at Cele bus stop, on Oshodi/Mile 2 expressway.
He said that the suspects beat up the police officer after he had arrested a recalcitrant motorcyclist at Okota road, Cele bus stop. Read more
