Why I poured hot water on my husband, woman tells police (Guardian)
A mother of four, Joy Akachi, has been arrested for allegedly pouring hot water on her husband at the Ijesha area of Lagos State.
The husband, Ibe Akachi, is battling for survival in a private hospital in Lagos. Joy, who was paraded on Wednesdy, June 6 by the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, told journalists that she did it on self-defence.
She said: “Akachi is really not my husband because he has not paid my bride price. Although I have four children for him, but in my tradition he is not yet my husband probably that was why he was beating me at any slightest provocation. He is not a caring husband, as he was not providing food for his family so I overwork myself trying to provide for my children”. Read more
Police Officers caught gambling on duty to face dismissal – Lagos CP (Independent)
Two officers of the Lagos State Police Command caught engaging in gambling while on duty are currently facing disciplinary action that could lead to reduction in rank or dismissal, the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said on Tuesday. SP Chike Oti, Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement, said the attention of the command was drawn to a video on social media, where the two officers were captured counting coupons which the eyewitness mistook for bribe collected from motorists.
He said the Commissioner of Police immediately ordered their arrest, detention and trial, while preliminary investigation revealed that the officers were not counting money but gambling coupons popularly known as Baba Ijebu.Read more
Police arrest two graduates who pose as bank officials to defraud account holders (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Police Command has smashed a syndicate that masquerades as bank officials, to defraud account holders.
Arrested, were two suspected members of the syndicate: Enohomfoh Osagie, a 2015 graduate of parasitology and entonoly from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State and Ebong Christopher, a 2016 computer science graduate of Tansian University, Oba, Anambra State.
The syndicate’s modus oparandi included contacting accounts owners on phone, informing them that the bank was upgrading its system and needed the customer’s account details.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are contract staff of Bright Star Limited, a company that deals with the verification of biometric detail of the Lagos State Government Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNC). Read more
$565,000 visa scam: Lawyer’s absence stalls American’s trial (NewTelegraph)
Trial of Marco Ramirez, an American, who allegedly defrauded three Nigerians of $565,000 in an American Green Card scam, was stalled yesterday as a result of the absence of the defence lawyer.
On June 22, 2017, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had slammed a 16-count charge bordering on obtaining under false presences at an Ikeja High Court. Ramirez had pleaded not guilty to the charges and Justice Josephine Oyefeso had granted him $250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum on July 10, 2017.
At the resumed court proceedings, Ramirez, who has fulfilled his bail conditions, informed the court that he had no legal representation. He said: “I have no legal representation this morning my Lord, I have been unable to reach my lawyer”. Read more
Commercial driver kills bride-to-be (Punch)
The family of a bride-to-be, Destiny Yahya, was thrown into mourning after a 52-year-old driver, Atake Benjamin, allegedly killed her.
Benjamin was alleged to have recklessly reversed his commercial bus, with the number place, KTU 823 XW, hitting Yahya in the process.
The incident was said to have happened on May 24, around 8.30pm on Kunle Akinosho Street, Oshodi, Lagos.
The deceased was said to have sustained injuries on the head and was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Read more
Alleged fake lawyer lands in police net (Punch)
An alleged fake lawyer, Uche Nwajiakwu, has been arrested by the Ojo Division of the Lagos State Police Command. It was gathered that Nwajiakwu was picked up on Friday, May 25, on the premises of the Ojo Magistrates’ Court after he reportedly applied for a bail for his client.
Punch Metro learnt that some experienced lawyers observed that Nwajiakwu’s presentation was “too poor,” which made them report him to the police that arrested him.
Our correspondent was told that the outcome of a police investigation into Nwajiakwu’s activities reportedly revealed that he did not study law in any Nigerian university or anywhere else in the world. Read more
Wanted dreaded Lagos cultist in police net (Independent)
Abdulrazak Kareem, a suspected dreaded cultist who had been on the wanted list of the police has been arrested.
He was arrested last Friday by the operatives attached to the Adeniji Adele Police Station. Abdulrazak Kareem popularly known as Falapa was wanted over alleged killings, gang war and destruction of property in Lagos Island.
Police sources said Kareem who was alleged to be the leader of the Okepopo boys was arrested on Friday after months on the run.
Sometimes in September 2017, a gang war broke out between the Okepopo boys and the Onola boys which residents attributed to supremacy in the community. Read more
