A fake soldier, Abdulazizi Abdulwasiu, has been arrested for dressing in his friend’s complete army camouflage uniform in Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered on Friday that Abdulwasiu was riding an unregistered motorcycle to a destination in the state when he sighted the policemen attached to the Ilemba Hausa Division who were on surveillance patrol on Jinadu Street, in the Ajangbadi area of the state.
Upon sighting the policemen, Abdulwasiu abandoned his motorcycle and took to his heels but the policemen, who observed his suspicious movements, gave him a hot chase and arrested him on June 14, 2024. Read more
Ogun reserves right to protect mineral resources within domain — Gov Abiodun’s aide (Tribune)
The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, on Sunday, said that the State government reserves the right to protect mineral deposits in the state.
The governor’s aide said that the Executive Order signed by the governor creating the Mineral Resources Agency is aimed at protecting those resources in its domain and entrenching decency and sanity in the sector, for the common good of the people in the state.
It said the agency was set up for mineral identification, geological mapping of the state, and data banking, in line with item 39 of the exclusive legislative list regulating mining activities in Nigeria. Read more
NDLEA bursts drug-filled shrine guarded with snake in Edo (Leadership)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have burst a snake-guarded shrine used to store illicit drugs in Igor Community in Benin City, Edo State.
The operatives made the move after detecting a specially constructed large hole storage in a wall covered with wallpapers and fetish objects.
NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said that “different quantities of illicit substances such as Methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado and Arizona, all strong strains of cannabis with a total weight of 8.743 kilograms, were pulled out from the deep hole dug in the wall of the shrine building.” Read more
Policeman guarding Rivers monarch kidnapped (DailyTrust)
A police orderly attached to HRH Cornwell Ihunwo, the paramount ruler of Rumu-Elechi community in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, has been kidnapped.
Godstime Ihunwo, an executive member of Diobu Vigilante and Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu-Orowurokwo, said he received a call about the abduction at 9pm, on Saturday.
He said the kidnappers had planned to abduct the traditional ruler but ended up taking away the police orderly and driver. Read more
Police probe alleged killing of Inspector by ‘‘Naval officers’’ (Nation)
The Police Command in Lagos State has begun investigation into the alleged killing of an Inspector by some Naval officers at Okokomaiko area of Ojo.
The Spokesperson for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, yesterday announced that the federal government was set to officially flag-off construction work for additional 2,000 housing units in eight states in the South and North-Central zones of the country.A statement from the minister’s spokesman, Mark Chieshe, said that this is in continuation of the groundbreaking ceremonies for Renewed Hope Cities and Estates, which began earlier.
He listed the states slated for the exercise to include: Ebonyi, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Osun, Oyo, Benue and Nasarawa.The nationwide groundbreaking exercise, he said, is sequel to the official launch of the housing programme by President Bola Tinubu in February 2024, with the inauguration of 3,112 housing units in Karsana, Abuja.It is also following the successful groundbreaking of 1,500 housing units in five states in the north comprising: Katsina, Yobe, Gombe, Sokoto and Kano from May 22 to 25, 2024. 5 suspected cultists, robbers nabbed in Delta (DailyTrust)
Operatives of the Delta State police command have arrested five suspected cultists and armed robbers.
City & Crime reports that the suspects were arrested in their hideouts by special operatives deployed by the commissioner of police, Olufemi Abaniwonda in Ughelli and a Special Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) deployed to Nsukwa community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state.
The spokesperson of the command, Bright Edafe, disclosed this to newsmen in Asaba. He said that four suspects – Amaechi Ichiagu of Ozalla town in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Akpomiemie Larry, Bright Ovie and Ese Ogodo – were arrested at Jesse, Ugbomaja and Okpe communities in Ethiope West Local Government Area. A retired Brigadier General, Uwem Udokwere, has been killed in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
According to a statement by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Udokwere was killed during an armed robbery attack on his estate on Saturday morning.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. Read more

A documentary on Elton John is set to premiere at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival 2024.
“Elton John: Never Too Late” will show John’s journey through the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which began in 2018 and wrapped up in Stockholm last July. It was the first-ever concert tour to earn over $900million (£708million) in gross ticket sales, making it the highest grossing concert tour of all time.

Only two weeks into its release, the Pixar sequel has managed to draw in a record-breaking crowd, earning an additional $100 million for a domestic total of $355 million, per Comscore. This puts the animated pic well above the $282.1 million domestic gross of Dune: Part Two.
On a global scale, Inside Out 2 has earned a grand total of $724 million to counter the Dune sequel’s $711 million. Read more
13 arrested after Greek mega-yacht allegedly caused forest fires on outskirts (LBC)
Thirteen people have been arrested after a forest fire near Athens which were allegedly started by fireworks coming from a mega-yacht.
Charges have been brought against a number of the people who were arrested.

UK’s Manchester airport cancels flights at two terminals after power cut (France24)
Flights at the UK’s third-busiest airport were being delayed or cancelled Sunday after a major power cut, the airport operator said.
The Manchester Airports Group, which also operates London Stansted and the East Midlands airports, said Manchester Airport had been “affected by a major power cut in the area earlier this morning.”
Power has now been restored at the international airport in the north of England, but passengers due to travel from Terminals One and Two were told to “not come to the airport” as all flights were cancelled “until further notice”. Read more
More than a dozen killed in synagogue, church attacks in Russia’s Dagestan (AlJazeera)
More than 15 policemen and several civilians, including an Orthodox priest, have been killed after gunmen in the Russian republic of Dagestan opened fire on two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a police post, authorities have said.
