Father defiles daughter for 12 years, jailed 21 years (Punch)
An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Thursday sentenced a 52-year-old- man, Akin Isaac, to 21 years for raping his 18-year–old daughter for 12 years in Lagos State.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced the convict to 21 years imprisonment following his plea of guilty to the one count preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.
During the arraignment, the state’s prosecution counsel, Omowumi Bajulaye-Bishi, told the court that Isaac defiled his daughter from age six to age 18.
According to the prosecution, the offence committed contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law Cap C.17 Vol. 3 Laws of Lagos State, 2015. Read more
Lagos partners LawPavilion on e-publishing, announces digital platform (Independent)
To ensure continued and effective administration of justice, Lagos State government on Wednesday, stated that it has begun the move to increase access and ensure quick dispensation of justice by publishing all laws of the state online.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), disclosed this at a press conference held to announce the partnership between the Ministry of Justice and Law Pavilion on E- publishing laws of Lagos State.
Onigbanjo said the electronically published Laws of Lagos State will bring the administration of justice in the state in line with international best practices, which encourages technology as a major driver of legal initiatives.
He said the new initiative of e-publishing the laws will also improve the ease of doing business in the state as investors and other interested persons will now have access to all the laws of Lagos State at a glance. Read more
Relatives of ‘one-way’ drivers’ victims justify vehicle auction (Punch)
Nigerians have taken to social media to justify the action of the Lagos State Task Force on traffic offenders that auctioned 134 impounded vehicles on Thursday, September 15, 2022.
The taskforce spokesperson, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, had said the auction was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
Abdulraheem added that the vehicles were seized for various traffic offences ranging from driving against traffic otherwise known as on “one-way” to wilful obstruction of traffic flow across various parts of the state.
He continued that the exercise was witnessed by members of the public and the processes are seamless. Read more

Rapper Panshak Zamani aka Ice Prince has finally spoken days after his release from prison.
Ice Prince, who was accused for allegedly assaulting a police officer, was released from the Nigerian correctional centre in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday.

Osun PDP declare support for Ayu, fault Makinde’s call for removal (Sun)
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, has declared their support for the national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.
The party faulted the call by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oye State that Ayu should resign his position.
In a statement made available to our correspondent by the State Caretaker Chairman of the party, Dr Akindele Adekunle, the party stated that there was no meeting where the South West agreed to call for the removal of the national chairman, stressing that “the call is not a mainstream position of the party in the region.
“The leadership of the PDP in Osun state wishes to affirm that we are not part of any revolt against the national leadership of the PDP. We remain guided and loyal to the PDP constitution which stipulates processes for leadership election and removal. As a party with a democratic tradition, we see no justification for any anti-democratic agitation to torpedo the ship of the party at this very critical stage of national campaigns and pre-election preparation. Traffic Offences: Widow, son beg for price reduction as Lagos auctions over 134 seized vehicles (Vanguard)
Emotions ran high on Thursday when a widow, Dorothy Dike, 49 and her son, Osinachi Ndukwe, wept openly as they begged for price reduction while their only vehicle bought at the rate of N1.8 million on hired purchase was being auctioned for N450,000.
Lagos State Government through its Ministry of Justice and the state Task Force held a public auction for over 134 abandoned and seized vehicles at Lagos State Task Force headquarters, Alausa, Ikeja, where auctioneers, agents, buyers, and vehicle owners tried to outwit one another.
A private auction house took charge of the event under the supervision of Mrs Arinola Ogbara-Banjoko of Lagos State Special Crimes Coordinator (Mobile Court) and Chief Superintendent of Police, Shola Jejeloye, the Chairman of the state task force.
At about about 12.35pm, Dorothy and her son who had earlier jumped for joy when their mini bus (Korope), with number plate, ANAMBRA NEN 347 YX, was displayed for auction with an opening bid of N50,000 but the joy was shortlived. Read more

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George, yesterday, insisted on the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, to allow a southerner to take over.
George, who has consistently said it is a misnomer for both the national chairman and presidential candidate to come from the same zone, stressed that the current arrangement is unfair to the South.
Speaking with newsmen on Thursday, George also dismissed the vote of confidence passed on Ayu and the party’s NWC at its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting last week.

Medical experts in Kogi State have lamented the non-availability of data for people suffering from prostate cancer in Nigeria.
While speaking on the sideline of prostate cancer awareness month yesterday, a team of medical experts under the auspice of, ‘Cancer of the Prostate Trans-Atlantic Consortium, (CAPTC) Federal Medical Center, (FMC) Site Lokoja’ submitted that prostate cancer remains the second leading cause of death for men in Nigeria.
The team lead of CAPTC site Lokoja, a consultant Surgeon with Federal Medical Center, Lokoja, Dr. Taiwo Jones Olaoluwa said it was very worrisome that there was no available statistics for people suffering from prostate cancer despite being one of the leading causes of death for men in Nigeria.
“We actually run a cancer registry here at the Federal Medical Center Lokoja. That is supposed to be something that will feed up to the central cancer registry in the Federal Ministry of Health. But the number of patients that present to the hospital is the only one we have. We cannot feed in data without adequate diagnosis. Read more

Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible 8” set interrupted by a flock of sheep (Fox)
Tom Cruise and the rest of the “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One” cast had to pause production after a run-in with a flock of sheep in the Lake District in England.
The actor, 60, was seen admiring the large flock as he stood to the side to make way for the sheep passing through. Cruise was also captured mid-air attached to a blue parachute while filming a scene in the upcoming movie.
Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt in the film series, sported a black jumpsuit as he descended back down to the ground.

Tokyo Film Festival names Julie Taymor as Jury President (THR)
The 35th Tokyo International Film Festival has named acclaimed stage and film director Julie Taymor as the president of its main competition jury. Taymor will be the festival’s third consecutive female jury chief, following French screen icon Isabelle Huppert in 2021 and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi in 2019 (the festival didn’t hold a competition in 2020 due to the pandemic).
Taymor is perhaps best known on an international basis as the director of the wildly successful stage musical version of The Lion King, which has played continuously for 25 years in over 100 cities in 20 countries. As a filmmaker, she has directed the Anthony Hopkins Shakespeare adaptation Titus (1999), the Oscar-nominated biopic Frida (2002), the Beatles jukebox romantic drama Across the Universe (2007); and the recent Gloria Steinem film, The Glorias (2020).
Tokyo’s festival chairman Hiroyasu Ando highlighted Taymor’s connections to Japan when unveiling her appointment.
“Ms. Taymor has directed not only musical theater but also many excellent films,” he said, adding: “She has a particularly strong connection with Japan, having studied Ningyo Joruri traditional puppet theater here as a student and later applying it to her own works.”

Kanye West’s Yeezy terminates deal with Gap (NBC)
Kanye West, who goes by Ye, said Thursday he’s terminated the contract between his company Yeezy and Gap Inc.
The move comes after Gap allegedly failed to meet its obligations in the companies’ agreement, including distributing Yeezy products in its stores by the second half of 2021 and creating dedicated Yeezy Gap stores, according to a letter shared by his lawyer with CNBC.
Shares of the retailer fell nearly 4% Thursday.
“Yeezy notified Gap of its concerns in August and gave the company a contractually-designated 30 days to cure its breaches,” Nicholas Gravante, a lawyer for Ye, told CNBC. He said Gap took no action on the concerns. Read more
Cardi B accepts plea deal in strip club assault case (HipHopDX)
The Bronx native pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and reckless endangerment — both of which are misdemeanors — in a New York court on Thursday (September 15).
Cardi’s plea means she avoids jail time and was instead given 15 days of community service. Additionally, she is required to stay away from the victims of the strip club brawl for three years.
Cardi’s plea deal arrived just in the nick of time as jury selection was due to begin on Friday (September 16) followed by the trial itself on Monday (September 19). Neither will now be going forward.

Gunmen kill 3 soldiers in southern Philippine attack (VOA)
Gunmen killed three soldiers in an ambush in the southern Philippines on Thursday in violence that coincided with the president’s visit to the region to pledge support for a 2014 peace deal with Muslim rebels that has eased decades of fighting.
There was no indication the attack on the soldiers in the island province of Basilan was connected to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s attendance at a ceremony with former Muslim rebel leaders in another southern province.
But the midday killings underscored the complex security issues the newly elected leader faces.

Nigeria’s walking football team begins Rwandan tour today (Guardian)
The Nigeria walking football team, will today embark on a two-day playing tour of Kigali, Rwanda, as part of their preparations for next year’s Walking Football Nations Cup to be held in Manchester, England.
Walking football is reportedly a slower paced version of the beautiful game and it was originally designed to help get over 50s back into football and increase physical activity through rekindling players’ love for the game.
Now in its formative years in Nigeria, the walking football team will be accompanied on the tour by interim chairman of Waka Football in Nigeria, Godson Uti, while chairman of Imo State Football Association and presidential candidate in the forthcoming 2022 NFF Elections, Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam, is expected to captain the team for the international friendlies.
“Nigeria and Rwanda are two of the African countries that will feature at the Walking Football Nations Cup in Manchester in the summer of 2023,” Uchegbulam said. Read more

The NBA legend’s The Last Dance jersey from the 1998 NBA finals sold for $10.1 million at the auction house Sotheby’s.
With this price, Jordan’s Bulls jersey set the record for the most money spent on a basketball jersey, any game-worn sports memorabilia and a Jordan item sold at any auction. The previous record holder for sports memorabilia was a Diego Maradona “Hand of God” jersey from the 1986 World Cup that was bought for $9.28 million back in May.
In terms of Jordan memorabilia, the previous record was a 1997–98 Upper Deck Game Jersey patch card with an autograph that was bought for $2.7 million in Oct. 2021. Read more
