Father, son die in Jigawa building collapse (DailyTrust)
The Buji Local Government Council of Jigawa has confirmed the death of a 30-year-old man and his two-year-old son in a building collapse that occurred in Madabe village.
The council’s Information Officer, Alhaji Ali Safiyanu, who confirmed the information to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Monday, said the 25-year-old mother of the boy survived the incident.
Safiyanu said that the surviving mother is responding to treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Read more

A 16-year-old Nigerian, Manasseh Aluga, has won an international award for transforming plastic waste into eco-friendly building bricks.
A United States-based environmental organisation, Action For Nature, declared Aluga from Jos, Plateau, as second in its International Young Eco-Hero Award for his groundbreaking Kundu Waste Management Project.
In a statement made on Monday, the AFN’s spokesperson, Kelly Carnes, said Aluga’s project earned recognition as a leading environmental innovator in Nigeria. Read more

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has invested $500 million to boost power supply in the Ogun and Lagos corridor.
Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this over the weekend when Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State paid him a courtesy visit.
Adelabu, in a statement, by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, described the agency’s investment as a boost to the Nigerian economy. Read more

Part of North West have been plunged into darkness as a trailer truck hit transmission tower T16 in Kano.
This was contained in a statement by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Public Affairs, General Manager, Ndidi Mbah on Monday..
It reads: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby states that a trailer carrying a container drove into the base of TCN’s tower T16 located in Gunduwawa Village, Gezawa Local Government Area, Kano State, on Sunday, 11th August, 2024, destroying the tower and causing outage in several communities in the North Western part of the nation,” she said. Equities trading at the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) began the week on a bearish trend, reversing previous gains.
The local stock market opened the trading week in negative territory, with the All-Share Index (ASI) declining by 0.73 percent to 97,881.75 points.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has invalidated the certificates of 101 individuals mobilised for national service by the University of Calabar (UNICAL) during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 service years.
According to a statement signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations of the Corp, Eddy Megwa, the organisation took this action to maintain the integrity of the national service programme and prevent unqualified individuals from participating.
The statement added that the affected individuals were found to have been mobilised fraudulently, and their certificates have been canceled immediately as part of the NYSC’s strong commitment to ensuring that only qualified individuals are issued certificates of national service. Read more

Following astronomical increase in price foodstuffs in various markets in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, the Ewi-in-Council, swung into on Monday, by dissolving associations in markets and warned traders against inflating prices of foodstuffs.
The council gave the warning in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with the leadership and some members of market women association.
The council expressed concern over the reports that most of traders in the markets hide under middle-men to inflate the prices of foodstuffs such as tomatoes, pepper, vegetable, palmoil, locust beans, meat, garri, among others by dictating prices to the farmers that brought them to the markets for sale. 24 dead in Uganda landfill collapse as rescuers find more victims (VOA)
The death toll from a mountain of rubbish that collapsed in the Ugandan capital rose to 24 on Monday as rescuers with excavators continued searching for victims, according to the city authority.
At least four children are among those killed by the collapse at the Kiteezi landfill Friday, police told reporters.
The collapse is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall. The precise details of what happened were unclear, but the city authority said there was a “structural failure in waste mass.” Read more
Pokémon series voice star Rachael Lillis dies at 46 (BBC)
Pokémon voice actress Rachael Lillis, who starred in Pokemon TV series, films and video games dating back as far as the late 1990s, has died from breast cancer at the age of 46.
Lillis voiced the main Pokémon characters of Misty and Jessie and many more on the beloved Japanese animated series.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 has struck near Los Angeles, California, according to the US Geological Service.
The earthquake occurred at 12.20pm just 2 miles southeast of Highland Park, a Los Angeles neighborhood, and has a depth of 12.1km (7.5 miles), the agency reported.
Although it was first classified as a 4.7 earthquake, USGS downgraded it to a 4.4 moments after it rocked Southern California. Shaking was felt in Los Angeles, East San Gabriel, Rosemead, Monterey Park and Long Beach, according to USGS. Read more

Super Eagles midfielder, Alhassan Yusuf, has joined Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit, New England Revolution, from Belgian league side, Royal Antwerp.
The Revs confirmed the signing of Yusuf on Monday, saying the 24-year-old Nigerian international joined the club using the season-ending injury replacement mechanism and has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with an option to extend for a further year.

Footballer slumps, dies during training in Enugu (Vanguard)
A rising footballer, identified as Chisom Oodo, on Sunday, died of suspected cardiac arrest during football training at Ogrute, the headquarters of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Chisom, who was in his early 20s slumped and died while contesting for football with an opponent during a routine training session.
