Father, son re-arraigned for alleged N5.6b fraud (Nation)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned a man and his son at the Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly laundering N5.6billion.
First defendant Adewale Daniel Jayeoba, his dad (second defendant) Emmanuel Jayeoba and their firm Wales Kingdom Capital Limited (third defendant) were first arraigned on August 2, 2022, before Justice Nicholas Oweibo on a two-count charge of carrying out banking business without an appropriate licence.
They pleaded ‘not guilty’ and were granted bail.
On Wednesday, the EFCC brought the Jayeobas before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke. Read more
Lagos developer defrauds 200 house seekers, victims blame police (Punch)
There was pandemonium on 22, Anuoluwapo Street, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State, on Saturday, after about 200 house seekers who paid various sums of money for accommodation discovered that they had been duped.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the landlady of the one-storey building, identified only as Kudirat, allegedly connived with an agent, Tunde Nojeemdeen, to perpetrate the fraud.
Kudirat was alleged to have directed the prospective tenants to Nojeemdeen for payments after they enquired about the building.
Things took another turn on Saturday, September 24, when the victims got to the house and discovered that the number of tenants outnumbered the 14 available flats. Read more
Events industry contributes N1b to GDP yearly, says Dabiri-Erewa (Nation)
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said Nigerians in the diaspora are not only supporting the growth of the economy through remittances, but also through foreign direct investments.
She said the Diaspora Day, the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit were some of the programmes the commission facilitates yearly to attract diaspora investments to support businesses and grow the economy.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke as the chairperson at the Event Industry Conference, held in Lagos, said these events created a platform for businesses and business owners to connect with potential diaspora investors.
“According to statistics, the events industry contributes conservatively to the Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria annually approximately N100 billion and the industry is growing exponentially,” Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said. Read more
Lagos man charged with biting off wife’s ear (DailyTrust)
The police in Lagos State have arraigned a 47-year old man, Ola Ade, before an Ogba magistrates’ court for biting off his wife’s ear.
The prosecutor, Inspector Akinleye Funmilola, said the accused engaged his wife, Kathryna, in a fight over a domestic issue.
The prosecutor said it took the intervention of neighbours to rescue the woman after he bit off her ear.
In his statement to the police, the accused said he resorted to biting off his wife’s because she had done the same to him. Read more
Learn Africa boss bemoans pirates’ negative impact on academic market (ThisDay)
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Learn Africa, Chief Emeka Iwerebon, has decried piracy’s adverse effects on the academic market.
Iwerebon stated this at the organisation’s annual general meeting in Lagos.
According to him, pirated versions of the organisation’s popular titles, such as ‘New Concept Mathematics’ and ‘New Concept English’, are sold at “outrageously low prices,” resulting in poor turnover and low profit.
“It is frustrating to see pirated copies of books that our company has invested heavily in its development on the shelves of booksellers a few months after their introduction to the market,” Iwerebon explained. Read more
FG approves Lagos’ proposed Lekki Airport (Sun)
The Federal Government has given its approval to Lagos State government to commence construction works on the proposed Lekki-Epe cargo and passengers Airport. The airport, expected to cost an estimated $900 million will on completion have 5million annual capacity traveling passengers around Lekki, Ajah and Epe axis of Lagos state.
While officially handing over an approval letter for development of the airport to the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 2022 edition of the Lagos Economic Summit tagged “Ehingbeti” on Victoria Island, Lagos, Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, said, the state is now qualified to embark on the project, considering its cosmopolitan nature.
Sirika said the proposed airport, was crucial, especially as the state embarks on its 30-Year Development Plan to make the state a model mega city in Africa and one of the best in the world, adding that “the airport would be effective to link Lagos with Africa and the rest of the world, through the aviation industry. The Lekki airport is the right step in the right direction.” He said.

Lagos govt, NCF hold walk on nature conservation (Punch)
The Lagos State Government in conjunction with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation is set to hold the 15th edition of the annual ‘Walk for Nature’ which will highlight the importance of nature protection.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, announced this on Tuesday, during a press conference held in Alausa, Ikeja.
Bello, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environment, Dr Omobolaji Gaji, disclosed that the walk will be held on Saturday.
He said, “The Lagos State government, since 2008, has been collaborating with NCF to enlighten the citizenry on the importance of environmental protection and conservation through a yearly programme tagged ‘Walk for Nature’ on every third Saturday of October of each year. Read more
Lightning kills 2, injures 4 in Imo (Vanguard)
Ndegwu community in Owerri West LGA of Imo State was Monday thrown into mourning as two of their sons were struck by lightning that also injured four others during heavy rainfall.
The victims, Mr Emeka Gerald Mbah, a 39-year-old from Umuejekaubi Umuahum Ndegwu, and his friend, Mr Chigbomkpa Ernest Odionyenma, 36-year-old from Umuadi Umuogwuta in Ndegwu community, died instantly after being struck by the lightning.
Mr Stanley Opara, an eyewitness, told newsmen that the deceased were both married with kids and until their demise were members of the Assemblies of God Church at Ndegwu. Read more

Lizzo has faced fatphobic bullying and internet attacks as a celebrity, but she told Vanity Fair in a profile published Tuesday that she is most bothered by assumptions that she makes music for white audiences.
The “About Damn Time” singer, who is on the publication’s November cover, said the notion that some Black musicians make music for white people is “such a critical conversation.” She said it’s “probably the biggest criticism” that she has received as an artist.
“When Black people see a lot of white people in the audience, they think, well this isn’t for me, this is for them,” she said. “The thing is, when a Black artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s going to be a predominantly white crowd.”
Lizzo said Black artists like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Tina Turner, Diana Ross and Beyoncé are examples of musicians she believes also happen to draw crowds that are “overwhelmingly white.” Read more
Sydney Sweeney to star in new ‘Barbarella’ film at Sony Pictures (Variety)
Sydney Sweeney has found another film project to add to her slate, setting plans to star in a new “Barbarella” movie for Sony Pictures, a source close to the project confirmed.
The film remains in early development, with no director, producer or writer currently attached.
Sweeney seemed to confirm her involvement with the project through an Instagram post late Tuesday afternoon. The actress shared an image of original artwork from the original 1968 space opera, with a caption: “time to save the universe.”
Sweeney has become somewhat of a marquee talent at Sony Pictures, with the actress co-starring alongside Dakota Johnson in the Marvel Comics adaptation “Madame Web.” The studio also landed the rights to “The Registration,” an adaptation of Madison Lawson’s thriller of the same name. Brad Fuller is producing, while Sweeney is attached to star.
Beyond film projects, Sweeney’s star has risen through her acclaimed performances in the first season of HBO’s comedy series “The White Lotus” and the network’s “Euphoria.” This year, she earned Emmy nominations for her turns on both programs. Read more

Rescuers in Venezuela continue search for missing after floods (France24)
Rescuers worked to clear rocks and mud from the streets of a north-central city in Venezuela on Tuesday, three days after it was hit by a massive and deadly landslide, and expanded their search for any bodies buried under the sludge.
Officials raised the death toll from the slide in Las Tejerias to at least 43 and warned that it could go up further as bodies are found downstream from the hardest-hit neighbourhoods.
Crews extended their search perimeter to include that area, along a river located about a mile (2 kilometres) outside the city.
At least 56 people were said to be missing, and some local residents have joined in the hunt for them. Read more

Hornets’ LaMelo Ball (ankle) to miss 1-2 weeks (ABC)
Charlotte Hornets All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball is expected to miss one to two weeks because of his sprained left ankle, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday.
The Hornets had earlier announced that an MRI confirmed that Ball has a sprained ankle and his return to full basketball activities would be determined by how he responds to rehab and treatment, adding that further updates on his status will be provided as appropriate.
Ball left Monday night’s preseason game against the Washington Wizards after his left foot was stepped on by Anthony Gill as he was driving toward the basket.
Ball collapsed to the floor and remained there for several minutes before getting up, limping to the foul line and shooting two free throws. He then exited the game and headed to the locker room. Read more
