FGGC Bida Old Girls’ unveil activities to mark school’s golden jubilee

The Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Bida, Niger State, is set to mark its 50th anniversary with a grand celebration this October.

The Old Girls’ Association, representing alumnae from five decades, has unveiled an impressive lineup of events to commemorate this significant milestone under the theme “50 Years of Memories, Magic and Milestones.”

At a media briefing held on Friday, September 27 at the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, Mrs Hilda Nkor, global president of the association, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming celebration.

“The journey from the founding of our school to where we stand today has been filled with countless memories.

“This milestone anniversary provides us an opportunity to reflect on the shaping of generations of women leaders, innovators and change agents. It is a tribute to all the beautiful ladies, who have passed through the gates of this great Institution,” Nkor stated, emphasising the school’s impact since its establishment on October 12, 1974.

The week-long jubilee celebration promises a diverse array of activities.

The celebration will commence with a Sensitisation and Public Awareness Campaign in Bida on October 7, highlighting the school’s influence and addressing key educational issues. Throughout the week, various events will showcase the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, community service and cultural heritage.Notable activities include an Intercollegiate Quiz and Debate Competition on October 8, a Free Medical Outreach for the Bida community on October 9, and a Novelty Football Match between old and current students on October 10. The festivities will continue with a Variety Night on October 11, featuring cultural performances and entertainment.A highlight of the celebration will be the Grand Gala Night and fundraising event on October 12 at the Armed Forces Officers Mess, Asokoro. This glamorous affair aims to secure funds for vital school projects and scholarships for deserving students.

The grand finale will take place on Founder’s Day, October 14, 2024, at the Multi-purpose Hall of FGGC Bida. The Etsu Nupe, HRH Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, CFR, will commission the 50th-anniversary projects presented by the Old Girls, symbolising the alumnae’s commitment to their alma mater.

FGGC Bida, established in October 1974, has a rich history of academic achievement. From its first graduating class of 28 students in 1979, the school has produced approximately 4,000 graduates who have excelled in various fields globally.

The Old Girls Association has consistently given back to the school through various projects, including the renovation of hostels, equipping the library and improving school infrastructure. This year, in collaboration with the Habiba Dangana Foundation, they have established a state-of-the-art digital classroom, further enhancing the learning environment for current students.Dr Amina Salihu, chairman of the Board of Trustees, used the occasion to call for increased government funding for public schools. “While we are proud of our contributions as alumnae, it’s crucial that the government adequately supports these institutions,” Salihu stated, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts in education.

FGGC Bida not only honours its past but also looks forward to shaping the future of female education in Nigeria with this golden jubilee celebration that is a testament to the enduring legacy of unity, excellence and empowerment the institution has fostered over the past five decades.

The association extends an open invitation to all alumnae, current students, staff, parents and well-wishers to join in this historic occasion.

“Together, we will celebrate the memories that bind us, the milestones that define us, and the magic that continues to inspire us,” Nkor concluded, encapsulating the spirit of this momentous celebration.
