Filling stations shut, loading halted as Lagos impounds tankers (Punch)

Marketers of petroleum products have expressed concerns that the alleged harassment of tanker drivers by officials of the Lagos State Government could lead to fuel scarcity in a few days, as some filling stations were shut in various parts of the state on Monday.

They also vowed to shut down operations in the South-West if the 30 tankers arrested by the Lagos State Government are not released.

This came as the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers has warned that the imposition of illegal levies on petroleum product trucks by agencies of the Lagos State Government could trigger a nationwide scarcity of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, commonly known as cooking gas. Naira hits 7months high, appreciates to N1,500/$ in parallel market (Vanguard)

The Naira yesterday sustained its upward trend rising to its highest level in seven months in the parallel market, where it appreciated to N1,500 per dollar from N1,530 per dollar last weekend.

The last time the Naira traded below N1,500 per dollar in the parallel market was Friday June 21st last year when it traded at N1495 per dollar.

But the Naira depreciated to N1,504 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM). Read more 

Tinubu to Senate: Tax reform bills not skewed against any section of the country (Tribune)

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has once again reassured Nigerians that the proposed tax reform bills before both chambers of the National Assembly are not skewed against any section of the country.

The Senator representing Niger East and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Sani Musa, restated President Tinubu’s assurance on Monday while speaking at the public hearings on the contentious bills.

The bills, which have since scaled the second reading in both chambers, include:

(i) The Nigeria Tax Bill 2024,

(ii) The Nigerian Tax Administration Bill 2024,

(iii) The Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill 2024, and

Tax Reform Bills: ACF recommends retention of 7.5% VAT (Channels)

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has recommended the retention of the 7.5% rate of Value added Tax (VAT) in the Tax Reforms Bills. 

ACF’s submission was contained in a comprehensive set of observations and recommendations to the National Assembly on the Executive Tax Reforms Bills, meant to achieve a sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s tax laws.

The group’s actions were the outcome of a special purpose committee of experts set up by its board of trustees which studied the bills for appropriate recommendations. Read more

Beginning late Friday night, several now-former employees at the Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance received termination letters from personnel officers at USAID, according to copies of those letters obtained by ABC News.
