Manchester United hope to sign Lille star Gabriel from under the nose of rivals Arsenal after submitting an 11th hour offer for the Brazilian defender.
The Gunners have been leading the race to sign the 22-year-old after agreeing a £22.7million deal with Lille for the defender.
Napoli have also had a bid accepted but Gabriel is believed to favour a move to London and the Gunners had hoped for a confirmation of the Brazilian’s decision to join them in the next 24 hours.
However, Gianluca Di Marzio reports that United made a bid for the Brazilian on Friday and that Gabriel wants extra time to consider his options.
Arsenal had been confident of completing the signing but United can easily match the £22.7m fee and would likely be able to offer higher wages than the Gunners, as well as the lure of Champions League football. (Metro)
