The planned visit of the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, to Anambra state has been rescheduled to Sunday, according to an announcement from the party in Awka.
Ganduje, originally set to visit the state on Thursday with members of his executive, was scheduled to commission the new APC state secretariat and pay courtesy visits to prominent figures, including the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe.
The rescheduled visit has raised political temperatures, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which views it as a potential precursor to the 2025 governorship election.
Tensions between the Obi of Onitsha and Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo have been brewing since Achebe criticized Soludo’s disregard for the traditional institution in the state.
The fallout from these disagreements led to Soludo dissolving the traditional ruler’s council, which was headed by Achebe, and a subsequent public dispute over the growing insecurity in the state.
This strained relationship even led Soludo to skip the 2024 Ofala festival of the Obi of Onitsha.
The new APC state secretariat, set to be inaugurated during Ganduje’s visit, was funded by Sir Paul Chukwuma, a leading contender for the party’s governorship ticket.
The visit is expected to be a one-day event, according to a statement signed by the state party chairman, Sir Basil Ejidike, and Secretary, Chidi Oji. (Nation)
