Ghanaian woman dies after ‘one-chance’ attack in Abuja (Guardian)
The death of Miss Freda Arnong, a Ghanaian national who had lived and worked in Abuja for several years, has sparked renewed concerns over insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following an alleged attack by ‘one-chance’ robbers.
‘One-chance’ refers to a form of robbery in which criminals masquerade as taxi drivers or fellow passengers to lure and rob unsuspecting commuters.
The Guardian learnt that Freda died at about 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2025, from injuries sustained during the brutal encounter. According to her brother, Arnong Arnong, Freda had closed from a house fellowship near the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Institute in Maitama around 7:00 p.m. on July 1, and boarded a taxi heading to Pope John Paul Street along the Transcorp Hilton road, where she lived. Lagos traders, leaders bicker over Thai investors (Punch)
Members of the Coalition of Associations in the Ikeja Information and Communications Technology accessories market, popularly known as Computer Village, have accused the Babaloja and Iyaloja (market leaders) of sabotaging foreign investment opportunities by disrupting a recent visit by Thai delegates.
In a statement jointly signed by its president, Timi David; secretary, Jerry Mba; and spokesperson, D.S. Ademola, sent to PUNCH Metro on Monday, the coalition described the incident as a deliberate attempt to stifle progress in the market.
It said the disruption occurred despite a court order restraining the market board, led by the Iyaloja, Abisola Azeez; the Babaloja, Adeniyi Olasoji, and other board members, from interfering in the affairs of the associations. Read more

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the Tinubu administration against clamping down on opposition parties, stating that the president himself benefited from a democratic environment under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The party said recent actions by appointees of the federal government suggest a deliberate attempt to weaken the growing opposition movement, which it described as a threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

ASUU directs members to begin nationwide strike (Tribune)
The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed that a directive has been issued for all branches of the union nationwide to withdraw their services over the delay in the payment of June 2025 salaries to its members, citing the enforcement of “No Pay, No Work” resolution.
ASUU branches in two federal universities, the University of Jos and the University of Abuja, have already commenced strike action in compliance with the directive.
President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, who confirmed the development to Tribune Online on Monday in Abuja, said what the institutions are doing is simply enforcing a National Executive Council (NEC) resolution of the union that any month in which salaries are delayed beyond three days, members should withdraw their services until the salaries are paid. Kenya: At least 10 dead in ongoing protests, 29 injured nationwide (AfricaNews)
Police in Kenya clashed with demonstrators Monday during anti-government protests as the authorities blocked major roads leading into the capital, Nairobi, and most businesses closed.
According to government-funded national rights watchdog Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, at least 10 people died on Monday, and another 29 were reported injured nationwide.
A police statement published on Monday evening counted 11 fatalities and mentioned that numerous police officers had been injured, although it counted far fewer injured civilians than the rights watchdog. Read more

US delays higher tariffs but announces new rates for some nations (BBC)
President Donald Trump has delayed imposing higher tariffs on US imports, while sending letters to 14 countries including Japan and South Korea detailing the levies they face.
The latest development comes as a 90-day pause the White House placed on some of its most aggressive import taxes was set to expire this week.
The president renewed his threat of a 25% tax on products entering the country from Japan and South Korea and shared a batch of other letters to world leaders warning of levies from 1 August. Read more
TSA to end shoes-off policy for airport security screening (ABC)
Nearly 20 years after airline passengers were first required to remove their shoes for security, the policy is being phased out.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is planning to allow passengers to keep their shoes on when they go through the general security line at many major airports across the country, two sources told ABC News.

Germany says UN should be main coordinator of Gaza aid (MEMO)
Germany on Monday called for the United Nations to take the lead in coordinating aid distribution in Gaza, as concerns mount over civilian deaths at food distribution points, Anadolu reports.
“There is an established and functioning humanitarian aid system, supported by major aid organizations, NGOs and the United Nations. It works. In our view, it must be able to deliver the necessary aid to the people,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kathrin Deschauer at a press conference.

A YouTuber was among three men arrested at the British Grand Prix on suspicion of causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to a Formula 1 car.
Lando Norris claimed an historic victory at Silverstone on Sunday in front of record 500,000 fans but the event was marred by two separate incidents of classic F1 cars being damaged on Friday.In a statement, Northamptonshire Police said they had: ‘Received a report that a classic Formula 1 car on display at Silverstone Circuit during the British Grand Prix event had sustained several thousands of pounds worth of damage, which was alleged to have been caused by someone accessing the display stand and climbing into the vehicle.
