Globacom, the pioneering digital services company, marks a significant milestone as it commemorates 20 years of shaping the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.
With gratitude, the company acknowledges the unwavering support of Nigerians who have stood as its bedrock since its inception two decades ago.
In a recent press release, Globacom expressed its profound journey of revolutionising the telecommunications sphere, catalysing dreams, and positively influencing the lives of millions across Nigeria. The company extends its appreciation to the government, subscribers, business partners, and stakeholders who have demonstrated unwavering faith in its endeavours.
Globacom’s impact on the Nigerian telecommunications scene has been transformative. It disrupted the norm by reducing SIM card costs from N25,000 to an affordable N200, defying expectations by introducing Per Second Billing right from its launch. This remarkable achievement was foreseen as nearly impossible for years to come.
At the forefront of innovation, Globacom introduced groundbreaking services to the Nigerian market, including Blackberry, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Magic Plus, Glo Direct, Glo Fonepals, Africhat, Glo Mobile Internet, GloFleetmanager, M-Banking and Glo Mobile Office. The company led the way in network technology by introducing 2.5G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks. Additionally, it pioneered the construction of Glo 1, an international submarine cable connecting West Africa directly to the United Kingdom and other global destinations, benefitting both coastal and landlocked nations within the West African sub region.
Glo 1 played a pivotal role in democratising internet access by reducing costs and becoming the preferred cable system for global OTT providers. The cable system seamlessly integrates thousands of kilometres of national fibre optic infrastructure across Nigeria.
Reflecting on the journey, Globacom acknowledges that its remarkable accomplishments over the past two decades are a result of the immense support from millions of Nigerians. The company conveys its gratitude for the loyalty, patronage, and unparalleled confidence shown by its supporters.
Globacom remains committed to its over 61 million subscribers, promising to deliver world-class communication and digital services in alignment with the company’s initial corporate pledge. The company asserts its position as a catalyst for socio-economic empowerment, not only within Nigeria but across the African continent. It emphasises its dedication to continuous investment in cutting-edge technologies to exceed customer expectations.
“As we celebrate our achievements these past twenty years, we wish to acknowledge that Globacom’s huge success is a result of the support of millions of Nigerians. We wish to thank them for their love and patronage and for the unprecedented confidence they have consistently shown in the company”, the statement noted.
Globacom restated its commitment to the provision of world-class communications and digital services in line with the corporate promise it made at launch to build a world class communications and technology infrastructure that would consistently deliver value to its esteemed customers. “We will remain a catalyst for socio-economic empowerment not only in Nigeria but also in Africa. We will continue to invest massively in new technologies to exceed customer expectations,” the statement concluded.
