Gov Oyebanji laments destruction of farmlands by herders in Ekiti (Leadership)
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has warned that the state government will no longer tolerate the destruction of crops and farmlands by herdsmen operating in the state.
Governor Oyebanji who decried that some farmlands heavily invested on by the government, particularly in Ikole local government area of the state are being destroyed by herders, called for the intervention of traditional rulers in the area.
Oyebanji gave the warning at the weekend in Ikole Ekiti during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and Ekiti State Government to convert and upgrade the Ikole Ekiti Specialist Hospital, Ikole Ekiti into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC). Read more
Tears as 20-year-old Air Force cadet who died in Abia hotel swimming pool is buried (Punch)
Mourners on Saturday wailed and clung to one another at the Okwuta Ibeku community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, where late 20-year-old Cadet Airforce Officer, Emmanuel Onyeomereneche, who died in a hotel swimming pool, was buried.
Onyeomereneche, who was said to have a few months to graduate from the National Defence Academy, had come to the facility with friends when he decided to swim at the facility’s swimming pool when the incident happened.
The young officer, on April 9, 2024, drowned at 6:37 pm in the pool and was recovered nearly three hours later, at 9:58 pm, due to a delayed and challenging rescue effort. Read more
NHRC records 106,604 human rights violation cases in June (Tribune)
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has disclosed that a total of 106,604 cases of human rights abuses were recorded in June alone. These abuses included 1,667 cases of abandoned children and the killing of 19 security personnel during this period.
Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, made this announcement on Monday in Abuja during the 6th edition of the Commission’s dashboard on the state of human rights in Nigeria. He stated that the figure for human rights abuses in June was the highest recorded in the past six months.
Ojukwu described the increase as disturbing but not unexpected, given the economic situation in the country. He called on state governors to take more responsibility in protecting the fundamental human rights of citizens in their states. Read more

Company clears air over worker’s death (DailyTrust)
The Management of KAM Steel Integrated Company has cleared the air over death of a worker, Yahaya Ibrahim, who died after slipping on the engine roller at the company along the Sagamu-Ogijo expressway in Ogun State.
Daily Trust had reported that the incident occurred on Saturday night after the 27-year-old man slipped on the rotating machine and got entangled by some parts of the roller engine.
Insiders said the victim was crushed to death by the machine after a fruitless effort to save him by other workers. Read more

Corps members will benefit from the new minimum wage, only if approved, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General YD Ahmed, has said.
Ahmed made this known during his visit to the Ogun State Orientation Camp in Sagamu.
The NYSC DG clarified that the benefit is contingent on the approval of the minimum wage, contrary to reports that the President has already approved an increment in corps members’ allowances. Read more

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on world powers to help Russia and Ukraine resume direct dialogue during a meeting Monday with Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Orbán made a surprise visit to China after similar trips last week to Russia and Ukraine to discuss prospects for a peaceful settlement of more than the two-year war. Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union this month and Orbán has since embarked on a peace mission, which, however, lacks the endorsement of other European leaders.
“China is a key power in creating the conditions for peace in the Russia-Ukraine war,” Orbán wrote on the social media platform X. “This is why I came to meet with President Xi in Beijing, just two months after his official visit to Budapest.” Read more
At least Ukrainians 31 killed, more than 100 injured in deadliest Russian missile strikes in months (UPI)
At least 31 people were killed and more than 100 injured Monday as dozens of Russian missiles slammed into cities across Eastern and Central Ukraine including the capital, Kyiv, where a children’s hospital was badly damaged, authorities said.
Most of the fatalities were in Kryvyi Rih, 90 miles southwest of Dnipro, and Kyiv where at least 17 people were killed and 48 injured in an unusual daytime raid including two at the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital in the east of the city where 16 people were injured, including seven children along with four at a private maternity clinic.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on social media that 15 of the injured were at Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital were being treated at hospitals. Read more
Tourist found with drugs in Bali avoids death penalty (Independent)
A court in Indonesia has sentenced an Australian man to six months of medical rehabilitation after finding him guilty of possessing methamphetamine on the tourist island of Bali.
Troy Andrew Smith, from Port Lincoln in South Australia state, was arrested April 30 after police raided his hotel in Legian, a popular tourist spot near Kuta Beach, and seized 3.15 grams (0.1 ounce) of crystal methamphetamine inside a toothpaste container from his room. Police found a further 0.4 grams of the drug, along with a bong and a lighter in his desk drawer.
His earlier charge of drug trafficking was dropped, it would’ve carried the death penalty. Read more

The Taliban has promoted an official, who is the subject of U.S. counter-terrorism sanctions, as the central bank’s new acting governor, a spokesman said, a move likely to be watched by Washington which has frozen billions of the bank’s reserves.
Taliban administration spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced the appointment of Noor Ahmad Agha, also known as Ahmad Zia Agha, by the Taliban supreme spiritual leader to the helm of the central bank in a statement on Saturday.
He said former central bank governor Hidayatullah Badri, who is subject to U.S. and United Nations sanctions, would take up the role of acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum. Read more
Gaza toll could exceed 186,000, Lancet study says (AlJazeera)
The accumulative effects of Israel’s war on Gaza could mean the true death toll could reach more than 186,000 people, according to a study published in the journal Lancet.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, more than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its military offensive on October 7 in the wake of deadly Hamas attacks.
The study pointed out that the death toll is higher because the official toll does not take into account thousands of dead buried under rubble and indirect deaths due to destruction of health facilities, food distribution systems and other public infrastructure. Read more

Ferrari has announced that its F1 chassis technical director Enrico Cardile has left the Scuderia with immediate effect, with the Italian engineer set to join Aston Martin F1.
