The 75-year-old grandmother, Mrs Iforiti Oloro, who set her own son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren ablaze in Ondo state, is dead.
Mrs Oloro died at the hospital where she was rushed for treatment after her health deteriorated.

Banks seeking licence recategorisation restrained from entering new deals (Guardian)
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), yesterday, issued general guidelines on processes; requirements and qualifications expected from commercial, microfinance and primary mortgage banks seeking licence recategorisation or conversion.
The regulatory guide signed by the Director of the Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Chibuzo Efobi, also applies to merchant, non-interest, and payment service banks approaching the CBN for a change of the line of business.
According to the documents, operators who have applied for conversion of the licence category are prohibited from expanding, reducing their current banking network, rolling out new products or executing new strategic banking activity, while the application is being processed. Read more
Queues disappear as banks increase cash payout to customers (Vanguard)
Banks, yesterday, increased cash payout to customers leading to a sharp reduction in the long queues and massive crowds that characterised the cash dispensary points in the last two and half months.
This followed the sustained cash evacuation from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Deposit Money Banks since Friday last week.
Vanguard visits to several banks in some major cities yesterday showed that most of the banks’ branches had enough cash to meet customers’ withdrawal needs.
Vanguard visits to four banks on Broad Street on Lagos Island showed that all the banks allowed customers to withdraw as much as N200,000, a departure from the situation last week when customers could not withdraw more than N5,000 in most cases. Read more
Lagos police arraign 4 for stealing phones (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned four men for allegedly stealing telephone handsets and money.
The suspects were also accused of assaulting a policeman, an action likely to cause a breach of public peace.
The defendants, Abiodun Akinola, Abdullahi Jimoh, Olalekan Eyiomo, and Omomuzo Arume, were arraigned on Monday in a Yaba Magistrates’ Court, before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka, on eight counts of conspiracy, theft and assault. Read more

NLC shelves planned strike over Naira scarcity by 2 weeks (Leadership)
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned strike action over Naira scarcity by two weeks.
This, the Congress said, was to enable it to monitor the level of compliance by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Naira notes disbursement and availability to Nigerians.
The decision over the extension followed the receipt of reports by the Labour Centre from its monitoring teams across the 36 States and all the local government areas where the apex bank was rated on a pass mark on the level of compliance. Read more

Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday, said that it has reliable information that Governor Samuel Ortom plans to appoint new permanent secretaries and give accelerated promotions to selected cronies in the state civil service.
A statement by the state Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ihomun, yesterday, in Makurdi, Benue State, APC wondered why Ortom would be making appointments at the twilight of his term in office when he should be writing his hand over notes.
The APC scribe alleged that they have information that the “new appointees would be strategically placed in selected ministries to constitute impediments to the incoming administration of Fr. Hyacinth Alia by planting landmines and pitfalls to slow his takeoff.” Read more

United Capital Plc has declared N9bn dividend payout to shareholders for the 2022 financial year.
“The Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting yesterday announced a 13% year-on-year increase in profit before tax to N13.5bn, a 49% year-on-year increase in gross earnings to N26.9bn, and a 33% year-on-year increase in total assets to N601.9bn.
“The board also resolved to declare a dividend of N1.50 for every 50 kobo ordinary share, much to the satisfaction of shareholders.”

The X-Files creator says Ryan Coogler is developing diverse reboot (Deadline)
There’s a new version of The X-Files on the horizon from Ryan Coogler, according to series’ creator Chris Carter.
“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So, he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory,” Carter revealed Monday on the CBC podcast On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko.
20th Television declined to comment. Deadline has reached out to Coogler’s reps.
Coogler’s production banner Proximity Media is under a five-year exclusive deal with Disney Television, which Deadline reported exclusively in 2021. Read more

Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter has testified that her mother was “visibly upset” after a 2016 collision with another skier, who says the incident left him with life-changing injuries.
The Hollywood actress’ trial has heard sworn testimony from her daughter, Apple Martin, about the crash on a beginners’ slope at the Utah resort.
The 18-year-old said her mother seemed to be in pain afterwards.

Lena Headey to star in Netflix series from Sons of Anarchy creator (UPI)
Lena Headey will star in a new Netflix series.
Netflix announced Monday that Headey, 49, has joined the cast of The Abandons, a Western series from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter.
The Abandons is described as “a pulse-pounding action drama that explores that fine line between survival and law in 1850s Oregon.”
Headey will play Fiona, a devout matriarch. The character is mother to four orphans she took in to create her own family, according to Deadline. Read more

The folk music documentaries Joan Baez I Am a Noise and Alexandria Bombach’s Indigo Girls documentary It’s Only Life After All are getting international premieres as part of the Hot Docs Festival, which unveiled its 2023 lineup on Tuesday.
Co-directors Miri Navasky, Karen O’Connor and Maeve O’Boyle’s portrait of Baez, the American folk singing legend and civil rights activist, bowed in Berlin. Bombach’s film about Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who became folk-rock duo Indigo Girls and eventually environmental activists, premiered at Sundance.
The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival’s 30th edition will be filled with a host of films about activists, as the festival is set to open with a screening of Twice Colonized, Danish director Lin Alluna’s film about Greenlandic Inuit lawyer and protector of her ancestral lands, Aaju Peter. Ukraine war: Germany sends much-awaited Leopard tanks (BBC)
The first shipment of Leopard 2 tanks from Germany has been sent to Ukraine, the German defence ministry says.
Eighteen cutting-edge main battle tanks were delivered after Ukrainian crews were trained to use them.

For the second time in a row, Nigeria will not be at the Olympic Games. Yesterday in Morocco, Guinea, which held Nigeria to a goalless draw last week in Abuja, defeated the U-23 Eagles to beat the country to the 2023 African U-23 Nations Cup.
The African U-23 Cup of Nations is the Paris 2024 Olympic Games’ qualifying tournament, where the four best teams will pick the ticket to the Games.

IOC recommends return of Russian, Belarusian athletes as neutrals (AlJazeera)
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international sporting events as neutrals, after they were banned from competitions in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
The IOC said on Tuesday that its advice to the governing bodies of Olympic sport does not concern the participation of athletes and their support staff at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 or the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
“The IOC will take this decision at the appropriate time at its full discretion,” said President Thomas Bach, adding “we are not kicking it down the road,” when asked if the committee was effectively buying time for the war to end. Read more
PGA Tour’s Mexico event leaves LIV venue for Tiger-designed layout (France24)
The PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico will move next fall from the site of this year’s LIV Golf League opener to a Tiger Woods-designed course, the PGA said Tuesday.
Mayakoba, a course designed by LIV Golf chief executive officer Greg Norman, had hosted a PGA event from 2007, when it became the tour’s first event staged outside Canadian or US venues, through last November, when its contract expired.
The feud between the rebel LIV Golf series and the PGA Tour has created a rift in elite men’s golf, with record purses offered by LIV luring several PGA stars and the tour responding with a revamp of its events that has included boosted prize money for many of its tournaments. Read more
