Hamzat apprehends commercial drivers for driving against traffic (Guardian)

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Saturday apprehended two commercial drivers and their buses for driving against traffic.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commercial drivers were apprehended at Majidun area of Ikorodu, on the outskirts of Lagos.

The buses with registration numbers, FKJ 704 XK and FKJ 864 XV were driving inward Ikorodu using the outward Ikorodu Lane. Read more

We will turn Lagos to technology hub as quickly as possible – LASRIC (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), says it will deploy all means at its disposal to ensure that the desire of the state government in turning Lagos to a technology hub is realised as quickly as possible.

The leader of the 16-member council, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

Ogundipe, also the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, was speaking against the backdrop of the presentation of a seed fund of N250 million by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to the council to boost innovation in the state. Read more

CAN insists on violation of religious freedom in Nigeria (Guardian)

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), yesterday, said it is unwavering in its support of the recent placement of Nigeria on a watch list of countries that violate religious freedom by the United States government.

The body, therefore, urged President Buhari to be fair to all Nigerians, stressing that the country belongs to all, irrespective of their religious and tribal persuasions, as any policy that is discriminatory is nothing but persecution.

In a statement in Abuja, National Director, Legal and Public Affairs of CAN, Evangelist Kwamkur Samuel, observed that the group would only stop complaining when there’s a just society, where the rule of law, fairness, and social justice are allowed. It appealed to the Buhari-led government to let the Constitution be its guide in all its policies and operations. Read more

Saraki dares Kwara govt over revocation of father’s property (Nation)

Immediate past  Senate President Bukola Saraki on Saturday accused  Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State of going all out to erase the legacies of his (Saraki’s) late father, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki. Saraki was reacting to Friday’s revocation of the right of occupancy to Plots 1, 3 and 5 Ilofa Road, GRA, Ilorin, by the governor.

The State government said it plans to build offices for civil servants on the said plots. The former Senate President said that Abdulrazak,by his action,has “crossed   the line of decency” with his   efforts to erase the legacies of the Second Republic Senate Leader.

The younger Saraki, in a statement he personally signed alleged that the war of attrition waged against the legacy of his father and everything that belongs to the late politician simply portrayed the Governor as a man who lacks a sense of history and who is out only to fight the Saraki family. NIMC dismisses workers as extortion, bribery, poor funding rock enrolment (Punch)

The National Identity Management Commission has dismissed six of its workers for engaging in extortion in the course of the ongoing National Identity Number enrolment exercise, investigations by Sunday PUNCH have revealed.

The appointment of a widow, Mrs. Bridget Twar, as commissioner in Taraba State, has excited the Tiv ethnic group in the northeastern state, writes Fanen Ihyongo, who is in Jalingo, the state capital.

When Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State announced his new cabinet and the name of Bridget Twar, a widow of Tiv extraction surfaced on the list of commissioners that will work with him, the Tiv ethnic group erupted in joy as they celebrated what they describe as yet another confirmation of the indigene-status of the Tiv in the state contrary to claims in some quarters. The celebration, our reporter learnt, was also compounded by the personality of the new commissioner.

Speaking on the development and the reaction of the Tiv across the state, a source explained that the significance of the appointment is in the fact that it is coming soon after the Tiv and Jukun people fought over claims by the Jukun that Tiv are “settlers,” not indigenes in Taraba State. “The appointment confirms the Tivs’ indigene-status in the state,” he said. What should people know about ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries. There are two ovaries in the female reproductive system, with one on each side of the uterus. Each ovary is normally about the size of an almond and they are responsible for producing eggs (ova), as well as hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. In general, cancer begins when a cell develops errors (mutations) in its DNA. The mutations tell the cell to grow and multiply quickly, creating a mass (tumour) of abnormal cells. The abnormal cells continue living when healthy cells would die. They can invade nearby tissues and break off from an initial tumour to spread to other parts of the body. Read more

Drowned RCCG pastor’s wife to sue Spanish hotel (Punch)

Strong indication has emerged that Mrs. Olubunmi Diya, the widow of the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s pastor who drowned alongside his two children while swimming in a Spanish hotel, may sue the company.

The deceased, Gabriel Diya, 52; daughter Comfort Diya, nine; and son Praise-Emmanuel Diya, 16; died on Christmas Eve at the Club La Costa World holiday resort in Fuengirola, Spain.

The woman alleged there was “something wrong” with the pool they died in, adding that she had hired a lawyer.

A Fuengirola-based lawyer called Javier Tor also confirmed he was now working for Mrs Diya, a British media outlet-metro.co.uk-reported on Saturday. Read more

West Ham have sacked Manuel Pellegrini following their defeat to Leicester.

Tyson Fury’s rematch with WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will take place in Las Vegas on February 22, both fighters have confirmed.
