Health commissioners hail Tinubu over plans to bring back ‘Japa’ doctors (Nation)
Nigeria Health Commissioners’ Forum has lauded President Bola Tinubu for approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration to address exodus of Nigerian doctors abroad.
The thirty-six commissioners said the policy would help transform Nigeria’s health care human resource management and tame the exponential drifting of medical doctors to foreign countries.
This was contained in a communique issued on Friday by the Commissioners at their 3rd quarterly meeting and jointly signed by its Chairperson, who doubles as Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani and the Secretary, Dr Ahmed Amina Ahmed el-Imam. Read more
Police lock church after service turns violent in Abuja (Punch)
Church service abruptly ended at the United Methodist Church in the Durumi area of the Federal Capital Territory as congregants engaged in a serious fight.
The fight, which went on for hours, resulted in damage to some of the church’s property and required intervention from FCT command operatives to bring it under control.
Our correspondent gathered that frantic efforts initially made by the police to stop the fight proved abortive until tear gas was released. Read more
NAUS condemns abduction of 20 medical students (Tribune)
The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has said that it is deeply outraged by the recent kidnapping of 20 medical students on the Otukpo-Otukpa-Enugu Road, which occurred on Thursday, August 15.
The students were en route to a significant academic convention organised by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students when the ugly incident occurred.
President, National Association of University Students, Comrade Obaji Marshal, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, called on relevant government agencies to take immediate and effective action to secure the safe return of the kidnapped students and to prevent such incidents from recurring. Read more
Police repels bandits, rescue 7 victims in Katsina (Vanguard)
The Katsina State Police Command has foiled a kidnapping attempt, rescuing seven victims from armed bandits along Magama-Katsina Road.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer for Katsina, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, disclosed that the incident occurred on Friday night around 11:15 pm after armed bandits in their numbers blocked Kukar Babangida Bridge situated along Magama-Katsina Road.
According to ASP Sadiq, the heavily armed bandits intercepted a J5 vehicle, kidnapped seven occupants, and set the vehicle ablaze before fleeing the scene. Read more

A professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has alleged that a prominent indigene of Ogun State committed suicide over cancellation of a contract under the administration of former Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
Utomi also narrated how he suffered to pay back millions of naira in loans after Amosun allegedly cancelled a contract he (Utomi) had with the Ogun State government.
Utomi was reacting to Amosun’s statement on the controversial Arbitration and legal matters between a Chinese firm, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co Lt, and the Federal Government of Nigeria/Ogun State Government on the termination of the contract at the Ogun/Guangdong Free Trade Zone. 13 passengers rescued from kidnappers in Kwara (ThisDay)
About 13 passengers reportedly kidnapped by suspected kidnappers along Obbo-Osi Road in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State have been rescued by men of the vigilante groups.
Already, one of the passengers who sustained serious injuries during the attack has been hospitalised in one of the hospitals in Osi town.
The incident, according to THISDAY checks, happened around 3.00 p.m on Friday when the bus conveying the passengers was coming from Abuja, en route to Ilorin. Read more
Military, LASTMA clash over planned closure of Lagos road (Punch)
Officials from the Lagos Traffic Management Authority and military personnel have clashed over the military’s attempt to close the busy Adeniji to Falomo Road.
The standoff between the two parties is ongoing at the time of filing this report.

This commitment was made during the NAFDAC Export Stakeholders’ Interactive Session in Lagos, which brought together representatives from COPAN, the Network of Practicing Non-oil Exporters of Nigeria (NPNEN), the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) to discuss the draft NAFDAC export regulations for 2024. Lufthansa has contacted singer Bebe Rexha after she claimed she was “mentally abused” by a member of the airline’s staff for being Albanian.
In a series of Instagram posts, the 34-year-old alleged she was “threatened” when speaking to a member of staff at Munich airport, who she thought was from Albania, in Albanian.
She also claimed the male member of staff was trying to ban her from the flight. It is not known whether Rexha was allowed to fly. Read more

Doctors across the country have held protests and candlelight marches and refused to see nonemergency patients in the past week after the killing of the 31-year-old postgraduate medical student in the early hours of August 9 in the eastern city of Kolkata.
