Hijab policy: Residents have their say

The hijab, recognised the world over as an icon of modesty in Islam, has had a history of controversy. Wearing hijab in public is required by law in Saudi Arabia (for Muslims), Iran and the Indonesian province of Aceh. And every now and then, the hijab debate has either raised eyebrows or had people completely uninterested whether it is in the hallowed chambers of the US Capitol, a school in France, Islam’s birth place in Saudi Arabia or public schools in Lagos State, where the government has a new policy.

In recent times, other countries, both in Europe and in the Muslim world, have passed laws banning some or all types of hijab in public or in certain types of locales. According to Wikipaedia, women in different parts of the world have also experienced unofficial pressure to wear or not wear hijab. So, the controversy the new hijab policy of the Lagos State government is not surprising. But hear what some residents have to say about it in the video.
