Hit-and-run bus driver kills LNSC officer in Lagos (Guardian)
The Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Ejigbo, Lagos State, has warned the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to fish out the commercial bus driver who killed one of its officers at Iyana Ejigbo Bus Stop on Monday.
An officer, Nsude Chika, attached to Iyana Ejigbo, was knocked down by a ‘Danfo’ bus at Power Line Bus Stop, Iyana Ejigbo. He died on the spot while the driver ran away. The deceased was said to be on his way to his duty post when the incident happened at about 1:30p.m. on Monday.
A resident of Ejigbo said the driver, who was driving against traffic, ran away with his passengers after knocking the victim under a moving trailer. Read more
Two robbers nabbed while sleeping in stolen car (Punch)
Two yet-to-be-identified suspected robbers have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly dispossessing a driver, identified simply as Utibe, of his Toyota Corolla car, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspects had ordered a ride from Utibe, who works with a car-hailing company, Bolt, around the Lagos Business School area of the state.
While on their way to their destination, Utibe’s friend, @sama_on_point, chronicled on Twitter that the suspects brought out sharp objects, stabbed the driver and absconded with his vehicle. Read more
Police explain brutality in viral video of arrested suspect (Guardian)
The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, has reacted to a viral video circulating on social media where police officers from Igando division violently arrested a suspect, 28-year-old Stephen Ade.
The video featured a police officer pushing a young man into their van, following his arrest last Friday. In a statement yesterday, the spokesperson said the video was “carefully edited by the sender to remove the barrage of insults the suspect hauled on the police officer in the presence of civilians.” Read more
Killing them softly: A Lagos community where residents drink, bathe with petrol water (Punch)
On a recent evening, Alhaji Wahab Olorunfunmi was having a meal in his house on Sanusi Street, Eijigbo, on the outskirts of Lagos.
The meal on his table looked typical, but the slightly brownish water he had in his cup was a deadly brew of water and petrol.
Olorunfunmi wasn’t on a suicide mission.
Ejigbo, where he has lived all his life as an indigene, is also home to one of the busiest satellite depots of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Read more
Lagos Assembly probes Auditor-General’s report on MDAs (Vanguard)
The Public Accounts Committee, PAC, of the Lagos State House of Assembly, yesterday, started the probe of the 2019 Auditor-General’s Statutory Report on the Accounts of the State’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
In an interview with journalists in Lagos, Chairman of the committee, Mr. Nurudeen Saka-Solaja, disclosed that the purpose of the exercise was not to witch-hunt, but to seek clarifications on outstanding queries, targeted at achieving improved service delivery. Read more
AIB, Quorum Aviation bicker over late pilot’s certificate (Thisday)
The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has insisted that Quorum Aviation Limited did not send any letter to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) requesting an extension of its pilot’s licence to fly the ill-fated Bell 206B III helicopter.
In a statement issued yesterday and titled ‘AIB- We stand by our report,’ AIB said there was no evidence of submission of an application for exemption provided by the NCAA’s All Operators’ Letter (AOL) DG020/20.
It added that there was no evidence of an application for the exemption provided by the AOL DG018/20 for proficiency check. Read more
Police parade seven fake soldiers, reward SARS operatives (Punch)
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun state, Edward Ajogun, on Tuesday paraded seven fake soldiers who were arrested in Lagos and Sagamu after their failed operation on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The CP, while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, said the suspects, who were members of a gang, had operated at Ijebu-Ife around 2.30am on September 4 in military camouflage uniforms.
Ajogun said the criminal gang engaged his men in a gun battle, which led to the death of one of them while seven others escaped. Read more
NCDC to launch survey on burden of pandemic (Nation)
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), is set to conduct household surveys in four states – Gombe, Enugu, Nasarawa and Lagos states, to better understand the burden of the infection in the country.
The sero-prevalence survey will provide the best evidence yet on the extent of COVID-19 infection in Nigeria.
Director-General of NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, and the Director-General, NIMR, Professor Babatunde Salako, made this known in a joint statement in Abuja. Read more
Water Resources Bill: Afenifere, Ohanaeze, others tackle govt as FG says critics ill-informed (Punch)
The federal government on Tuesday defended the National Water Resources Bill 2020, saying it was being opposed by people who had access to the media.
It said it would go ahead and ensure that the passage of bill because it would be for the good of the country.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said these at a press conference he addressed with the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, in Abuja

China, India agree to stop troop deployment along disputed border (Aljazeera)
China and India have agreed to stop deploying more troops to their contested border and avoid any action that might complicate the tense situation there.
Senior military officials from both countries met on Monday and exchanged ideas on their contested contested Himalayan border in Ladakh, Chinese defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Tuesday.

Covid: US death toll passes 200,000 (BBC)
The US coronavirus death toll has passed 200,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
More than 6.8 million people are known to have been infected in the US, more than in any other country.
The milestone comes amid an increase in cases in a number of states, including North Dakota and Utah.
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the new death toll was a “horrible thing” and claimed China “should have stopped” the virus. Read more
Handy iOS feature lets you take a screenshot by tapping the back of your iPhone (Metro)
If you want to take a screengrab on an iPhone, you may be forgiven for thinking you have to pinch the volume rocker and jab the power button.
And in fact, that was the way ever since Apple introduced the iPhone X. But with iOS 14, there’s a new way and it’s extremely handy.
All you have to do is toggle the option to ‘back tap’ the iPhone and you can snap a screenshot just through drumming your fingers on the back of the device.
As well as taking screenshots, Apple has also made the feature available for other functions.
For example, you can double or triple tap the phone to turn the volume up or down, magnify things or scroll up and scroll down on websites. Read more
UN General Assembly: US-China tensions flare over coronavirus (BBC)
Tensions between the US and China came to the fore of the annual UN General Assembly in New York, with US President Donald Trump blaming China for the spread of coronavirus.
He called for China to be held “accountable” for the pandemic.
In his speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping said his country had “no intention to enter a Cold War with any country”.

Toothbrush removed from man’s stomach after he swallowed it while brushing (Metro)
A bloodied toothbrush had to be removed from a man’s stomach after he swallowed it while cleaning the back of his throat. Doctors removed the 19cm-long brush within 24 hours, fearing that leaving it any longer could have been fatal. The patient, 39, whose name has been withheld, was brushing his teeth on September 15 when it slipped. He rushed to a nearby health clinic, which quickly referred him to a hospital more than 100km away. Read more
Musk: $25,000 Tesla ready ‘in about three years’ (BBC)
Tesla founder Elon Musk has announced technology that he says will make Tesla batteries cheaper and more powerful.
At a live presentation that Mr Musk labelled ‘Battery Day’ he also teased the possibility of a $25,000 (£19,600), fully-autonomous Tesla “in about three years time”.
“This has always been our dream to make an affordable electric car,” he said.
But the news didn’t excite investors and $50bn was wiped off its stock market value.
The main announcement was Tesla’s new larger cylindrical cells. It was claimed the new batteries will provide five times more energy, six times more power and 16% greater driving range. Read more

COVID-19 threatens Eagles’ friendlies as case rises in Austria (Guardian)
Super Eagles’ international friendly games against the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia billed to hold in Austria next month could be cancelled or moved to another country if the current rise in COVID-19 cases persist in the European country.
According to reports from various international media outlets accessed by The Guardian, Austria has started a second wave of coronavirus infections. The country’s chancellor on Sunday urged citizens to comply with reinforced rules to keep low the numbers, suggesting that companies keep employees working from home if possible. Read more
NPFL: Sunshine Stars unveil Ogunbote as new manager (Punch)
Nigeria Professional Football League side Sunshine Stars on Tuesday unveiled Gbenga Ogunbote as their new manager.
It’s Ogunbote’s second spell at the club, having also managed the Akure-based side in 2012, and helping them reach the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Ondo State Football Agency, which oversees the affairs of Sunshine, announced Ogunbote’s appointment at the Ondo State Games Village in Akure, the state capital.
Speaking at the event, ODSFA chairman, Tajudeen Akinyemi, said the choice of Ogunbote was due to his vast experience in managing top clubs in the country.

West Ham: David Moyes, Issa Diop & Josh Cullen test positive for coronavirus (BBC)
West Ham United manager David Moyes and two of the club’s players have tested positive for coronavirus.
The club were informed of the positive tests while preparing for Tuesday’s home Carabao Cup tie against Hull City – which the Hammers won 5-1.
Moyes, 57, defender Issa Diop, 23, and 24-year-old midfielder Josh Cullen will now be required to self-isolate.
“The manager and both players immediately left the stadium and have returned home,” said a club statement. Read more

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he’s open to strengthening his squad after his side booked their spot in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. Goals from Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood gave United a 3-0 win against Luton, helping the club to put memories of a 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace behind them. French Open 2020: Bianca Andreescu withdraws to prepare for busy 2021 (BBC)
Bianca Andreescu will miss her third Grand Slam of 2020 after pulling out of the French Open to focus on recovering from a knee injury before a busy 2021.
Andreescu, 20, won the 2019 US Open but was injured at the WTA Finals in October and has not competed since.
The world number seven said she will now miss the rest of the season.

Tottenham’s Carabao Cup third-round clash against Leyton Orient has been called off after the League Two club suffered a coronavirus outbreak, with talks ongoing over what happens next. Orient confirmed on Monday that ‘a number’ of first-team players had tested positive for Covid-19, with Tottenham having spent £5,000 to pay for the lower league side to be checked over.
