Hoodlums burn BRT bus over commercial bus driver’s death (Vanguard)
An unidentified commercial bus driver was yesterday, killed in an auto crash involving his vehicle and a Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, on Ikafo bridge in the Ogudu area of Lagos.
The driver of the 14-seater Volkswagen Transporter minibus was driving inward Lagos Mainland when tragedy struck.
The impact of the collision with the BRT forced the commercial bus to somersault.
Eyewitnesses said the driver died before help could arrive. Read more
Petition: Tribunal grants Jandor substituted service on Sanwo-Olu, Rhodes-Vivour (Guardian)
Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has granted leave to the PDP Gubernatorial Candidate for the state, Dr Azeez Adediran (alias Jandor), for a substituted service of an election petition on the state Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The tribunal also granted that Adediran should do the same for Labour Party’s Gubernatorial Candidate for the state, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.
The respondents in the petition numbered EPT/LAG/GOV/01/2023 are Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sanwo-Olu, Sanwo-Olu’s deputy, Dr Hamzat Obafemi; APC, Rhodes-Vivour and Labour Party (LP). Read more
Lagos to arraign 18-year-old for hoax calls to Fire Service (Channels)
The Lagos State Government is set to arraign 18-year-old Uzuokwu Solomon for offences relating to making hoax calls for an emergency responder which is punishable under the Lagos State Fire Service Law and Command and Control Centre Law 2013.
This was made known in a statement by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ololade Agboola.
Agboola said the culprit who is alleged to have called the emergency line of the Fire Service on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 17:35 hours from Harmony Estate, Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos, reported a fire emergency within the estate leading to the activation of emergency processes and eventual dispatch of the fire trucks from Lekki Phase II Fire Service Station. Residents accuse Lagos agency officials of assaulting estate guards (Punch)
Residents of Omole Estate Phase II have accused officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency of beating up the estate’s security guards.
Our correspondent gathered from the residents that the estate security guards denied the LASBCA officials access to the estate over their failure to properly identify themselves on Monday.
The residents said the guards resisted and were subsequently attacked by the officials.
Kebbi Gov-elect, deputy, receive certificates of return (Tribune)
The Governor-elect in Kebbi state, Dr Nasiru Idris and his Deputy, Alhaji Abubakar Tafida have been presented with their certificate of returns by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kebbi state, Alhaji Muhammad Mahmoud Bello in Birnin-Kebbi.
In his speech, the governor-elect promised to complete all the ongoing projects by his predecessor before embarking on new ones that his administration will initiate.

The Federal Government has declared Friday and Monday as public holidays for Muslims in the country to celebrate the end of Ramadan fasting.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore, said the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government.
He said Aregbesola wished the Muslim faithful a happy celebration and asked them to imbibe the virtues of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, self-denial, and sacrifice, adding that the “deep spiritual consciousness” of the fasting period should not end but be maintained. Read more
Police rescue 8 kidnapped victims in Benue (DailyTrust)
The Police in Benue State says its operatives have rescued all eight abducted victims unhurt in Owukpa community in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of the state.
Daily Trust had earlier reported that the victims were abducted on Sunday evening along Atamka-Ugbugbu road of Owukpa while they were returning from a village market.
But, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, on Tuesday confirmed that the victims were abducted on their way to farm. Read more

The New York Post reported that the rapper and the reality star — who had social media personality Dixie D’Amelio, Michael Rubin, and Kim’s sister Khloe Kardashian in tow — paid a visit to the jail in Lancaster, where they teamed up with Reform Alliance’s Future Shapers Advisory Council for Gen Z activists.
The Reform Alliance — which was founded by JAY-Z and Meek Mill, alongside Rubin and Patriots owner Robert Kraft — told the Post that the celebrities were there to learn all about the terrible conditions in the jail system so they could effectively advocate for change. Read more

At least 78 people have been killed and dozens more hurt during a stampede in Yemen’s capital city after a crowd of people gathered at an event to receive financial aid were spooked by gunfire and an electrical explosion, according to officials from the Houthi rebel group.
The deadly crush took place in Old City in the center of Sanaa late Wednesday night after hundreds of poor citizens gathered for the distribution at a school, which was informally organized by merchants, according to the Houthi-run Interior Ministry.
Two witnesses, Abdel-Rahman Ahmed and Yahia Mohsen, told the Associated Press that armed Houthis had fired into the air in an attempt at crowd control. One of the bullets struck an electrical wire, causing it to explode and sending people — including many women and children — running for their lives. Read more

A Moscow court on Wednesday dismissed a prominent Russian opposition figure’s appeal of his 8 1/2-year prison sentence for criticism of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Ilya Yashin was convicted in December of spreading false information about the military, which was made a criminal offense after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine.
