A software engineer, Akinbiyi Gbolahan, who had an encounter with ‘one chance’ bus criminals, said he has yet to get over the traumatic encounter which happened on Saturday, June 11, 2022.
He was still soaked in the experience when he spoke with our correspondent.
He explained that the day was work-filled and he was stressed, adding that he left his office located at Ikeja, Lagos, at 11 pm that day.
Akinbiyi stated, “Regularly, a colleague of mine drops me off at Fadeyi Bus stop whenever we close late at work. Then he drives to Jibowu to link Yaba using the Jibowu under bridge and on my part, I take a bus or cab heading to Ojuelegba where I reside. Read more
2 arrested for allegedly assaulting policeman in Lagos (Guardian)
The police in Lagos, on Friday, said it arrested two employees of a transport company for allegedly assaulting a policeman on duty.
The Police Public Relations Officers (PRO) in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Friday in a statement.
Hundeyin said that the crime was committed against one Insp. Rowland Uankhehi at 7:00 a.m. on Friday at Cele sus stop, on Oshodi/Mile 2 expressway.
He said that the suspects beat up the police officer after he had arrested a recalcitrant motorcyclist at Okota road, Cele bus stop. Read more
2 cheat death in Lagos as car tumbles off Otedola Bridge (Vanguard)
At least two occupants in a lone accident on Friday, narrowly escaped death when their car skidded off Otedola Bridge along Lagos Ibadan Expressway inward Berger area.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, who confirmed the incident, said there was no loss of lives.
The victims however, sustained different degree of injuries and were.later taken to hospital for treatment

Despite being teargassed by police, Peter Obi’s supporters hold rally in Ebonyi (DailyTrust)
A large number of the supporters of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, despite being teargassed by the Nigeria Police, held their rally in Abakiliki, the state capital.
Armed policemen had at the early hours of Saturday stationed themselves at Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakiliki to prevent the ‘OBI-dient supporters’ from gaining access to the venue of the rally.
Daily Trust learnt the coordinators of the ‘OBI-dient’s’ movement had earlier approached the state government to use the stadium but were asked to pay the sum of four million naira which caused a change of venue to the Pastoral Centre, Mile 50 for the rally.
At Mile 50, the supporters were seen in droves at 8:am. However, it was claimed that the Nigeria Police Force threw teargas canisters at the LP supporters which forced them to run for safety. Later, they gathered at Nkwegu Ogbala where they took off for the rally. Read more
Lagos court jails Vietnamese for trafficking in pangolin scales (Nation)
The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday convicted a Vietnamese man, Nguyen Huy, of trafficking 200kg of pangolin scales.
Justice Daniel Osiagor sentenced Huy to three months imprisonment on each of two counts preferred against him by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).
The court ordered that the sentence should run concurrently and commence from May 9, 2022, when Huy was arrested in Lagos.
Justice Osiagor gave the judgment following Huy’s ‘guilty’ plea to the charge and an allocutus by his counsel, Mr. Okey Mgbobukwa, praying the court to temper justice with mercy. Read more

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met with the Chairman and select members of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities, promising to engage in further consultations with relevant stakeholders, towards ending the protracted strike by university lecturers, under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The President said without necessarily going back on what is already established policy, “I will make further consultations, and I’ll get back to you.”

Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 superhero film Constantine.
The news about the 58-year-old performer was confirmed on Friday by Deadline, and it was reported that Francis Lawrence, who made his directorial debut on the original film, would return to helm the sequel.
Akiva Goldsman is also set to both write the script to the upcoming feature and produce alongside J.J. Abrams.

Henry Silva, “Ocean’s 11” and “The Manchurian Candidate” actor, dies at 95 (TheWrap)
Henry Silva, a character actor known for playing bad guys and gangsters in movies like “The Manchurian Candidate” and “Ocean’s 11,” has died.
Silva died Wednesday of natural causes at the Motion Picture Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, his son Scott Silva confirmed to Variety. He was 95.
The stage and screen actor, whose career spanned 50 years and 140 TV and film credits, was also an honourary member of The Rat Pack. He starred alongside Frank Sinatra in both “Ocean’s 11” (1960) and “The Manchurian Candidate,” (1962) in which he played one of the 11 casino robbers in the classic caper film. Also in 1962, they both appeared in “Sergeants 3” and would go on to collaborate on the TV movie “Contract on Cherry Street” (1977) and “Cannonball Run II” (1984) with Dean Martin.

“The Karate Kid” Franchise announces new movie and sets release date (Collider)
Just a week following the Season 5 release of Cobra Kai, Sony has announced that a new Karate Kid movie is on the way, and it already has a release date. The upcoming movie is set to release on June 7, 2024. While no further information regarding cast, crew, or plot are available, Sony has stated that the new installment will continue the original franchise.
The original franchise kicked off in 1984, with Ralph Macchio leading the movies as Daniel LaRusso. The first movie introduced viewers to the titular character, a scrawny teenager who’s relentlessly bullied by his classmate Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and his crew. So, Daniel turns to karate master Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita), whose unconventional methods soon help Daniel gain a fighting chance against Johnny and the rest of Cobra Kai.
Following the first movie, three others were released set within what’s now dubbed the “Miyagi-verse.” In The Karate Kid II, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi head to Okinawa, where Daniel comes up against a new foe: Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto). Macchio and Morita returned once more for The Karate Kid III. “The Phantom of the Opera”, Broadway’s longest-running show, is closing (EW)
After 35 years, the curtain is closing on the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which holds the title of the longest-running show on the Great White Way, will take its final bow at the Majestic Theatre on Feb. 18, 2023. According to The New York Times, The Phantom of the Opera is the latest COVID casualty following a decline in audience attendance.
“The Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group’s Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Harold Prince — the longest-running show in Broadway history — is confirmed to play its final 5 months,” representatives for the show said in a statement.
The show returned last September when the lights went up on Broadway after the pandemic forced all productions to shut down on March 12, 2020. Several shows like Ain’t Too Proud, Jagged Little Pill, Waitress, and Thoughts of a Colored Man have since closed. Read more

Iranian woman dies in custody after arrest by morality police, sparking protests (ABC)
A young Iranian woman has died after three days in a coma following her detention by morality police enforcing Iran’s strict hijab rules, sparking protests by Iranians.
In the past few months, Iranian activists have urged women to publicly remove their veils, a gesture that would risk their arrest for defying the Islamic dress code as the country’s hardline rulers crack down harder on “immoral behaviour”.
Videos posted on social media have shown cases of what appeared to be heavy-handed action by morality police units against women who had removed their hijabs.
Authorities launched probes into the death of Mahsa Amini following a demand by President Ebrahim Raisi, state media reported on Friday, as police said the 22-year-old was ill as she waited together with other detained women at a morality police station. Read more
German guard Schroder plans to sign with Lakers (RFI)
German free agent point guard Dennis Schroder plans to return to the Los Angeles Lakers for the upcoming NBA campaign, according to multiple reports on Friday.
Schroder, who played for the Lakers in the 2020-21 season, plans to sign a one-year deal worth up to $2.64 million, according to ESPN, which reported the deal along with The Athletic.
Schroder, who turned 29 on Thursday, has averaged 21.6 points and 7.3 assists for Germany in the EuroBasket tournament.

Mathias Pogba has been taken to court in relation to the alleged extortion attempt made against his brother, former Manchester United footballer Paul Pogba, according to a report from France.
According to BFMTV, a French news outlet, Mathias Pogba’s police custody has been lifted, and he was set to be moved to court in Paris on Friday night.
Across Tuesday and Wednesday, four people were taken into police custody in relation to an alleged extortion attempt made against Paul Pogba, who currently plays for Juventus.
Mathias, one of the four questioned by authorities, reportedly presented himself to investigators, and was placed in police custody. Read more

Great Britain crashed out of the Davis Cup in Glasgow on Friday as the Netherlands won a deciding doubles rubber to end the hopes of Andy Murray and his team-mates.
Dan Evans gave Britain the perfect start with a straight-sets victory over Tallon Griekspoor, then Cameron Norrie could have sealed the tie with victory over Botic van de Zandschulp but was well beaten 6-4 6-2 to send it to a deciding doubles rubber.
