How my friend and I celebrated Christmas in kidnappers’ den — Victim (Nation)
Austin Abide Odion left his residence in Benin, Edo State capital as early as December 23, 2021 for his hometown, Unemeh-Uzanu in Etsako East Local Government Area, in order to beat the traffic snarl associated with the Yuletide period. To quicken his journey, he chose to join his bosom friend, Lawrence Egumamhe, who was also travelling home for Christmas with his family in his Mercedes Benz car. Neither Odion nor his friend had an inkling that they would be celebrating Christmas in the den of kidnappers.
Odion, a telecoms engineer in his 40s and cousin to the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba, and his friend Egumamhe were abducted by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen and kept in captivity for four days before he was released upon payment of ransom by his family members.
Narrating his ordeal, Odion said for four days, his captors denied him and other victims food and water in their den tucked inside a forest. He said the kidnappers later abducted a soldier, following which the gang was busted.
Odion, whose family is based in Benin but works in Anambra State, disclosed that the criminals, who collected his bag containing a huge sum of money amid sporadic gunshots, later obtained a ransom in millions of naira from his relatives before he and Egumamhe regained their freedom around Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State. Having been brutalised and dehumanised in the forest, they also had to trek a long distance towards Okene in Kogi State. Read more

Harry Belafonte’s daughter says Sidney Poitier’s death Is ‘most difficult thing’ he’s had to fathom (People)

Now, Harry, 94, is deep in mourning for Poiter, who died Thursday evening at the age of 94.
The singer’s daughter Shari Belafonte told PEOPLE, “Losing Sidney is probably the most difficult thing my father has had to fathom, more so than losing Martin L. King.”
“They were closer than brothers,” says Shari, 67. “They have known and loved each other for more than 70 years, collaborating, living life to the fullest. While Harry was much more vocal and seemingly more instrumental in the civil rights movement via his stage presence and his navigating the dynamics between Leaders and politicians, Sidney broke those barriers in a much more creative way by taking a stand in the characters he portrayed so brilliantly on film.”Read more

New blockbuster The 355, which features a star-studded cast led by Jessica Chastain, has been panned in reviews, being branded ‘disappointing’ and ‘lazy’.

Jessica stars alongside the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, and Sebastian Stan – but the impressive cast list hasn’t made up for what appears to be a lacklustre story.
The Guardian dubbed it a ‘disappointing dud’ and as ‘forgettable as its title,’ while The Times has argued that the incredible cast deserved more, adding that the good parts ‘can’t save this hotchpotch production from its ruinous inadequacies.’ Read more
Ben Affleck explains why working on Justice League was ‘the worst experience’ (CinemaBlend)
It’s no secret to anyone who follows along with the DC Extended Universe that Justice League was a troubled production. The finalized movie that made into theaters in late 2017 was largely reshot by Joss Whedon and skewed drastically from Zack Snyder’s original vision, not to mention the public later learning of numerous behind-the-scenes clashes. Now Batman actor Ben Affleck has said that his time on Justice League was “the worst experience” for him, although not all of that had to do with the movie itself.
DCEU fans will recall that following Justice League, Ben Affleck was originally supposed to direct and star in The Batman, which would have been his first time playing DC’s Dark Knight in a solo movie. However, in early 2017, he relinquished helming duties, and two years later, he
officially exited the project. During a conversation with The Los Angeles Times about both his professional and personal lives, Affleck discussed how he realized he wouldn’t be “happy” directing, and then he said the following about why Justice League was such a difficult time for him:
It was really Justice League that was the nadir for me. That was a bad experience because of a confluence of things: my own life, my divorce, being away too much, the competing agendas and then [director] Zack [Snyder]’s personal tragedy [Snyder’s daughter Autumn died by suicide in 2017] and the reshooting. It was just the worst experience. It was awful. It was everything that I didn’t like about this. That became the moment where I said, ‘I’m not doing this anymore.’ It’s not even about, like, Justice League was so bad. Because it could have been anything.
So in addition to being saddened about director Zack Snyder losing his daughter, and subsequently frustrated about how much Justice League was being changed following the filmmaker’s departure, Ben Affleck was also struggling through his own issues, particularly divorcing Jennifer Garner and relapsing into alcoholism. Put all those pieces together, and it’s no wonder he felt miserable working on the fifth DC Extended Universe movie. That said, in January 2021, Affleck said that taking on the Batman role to excite his kids, and even getting to wear the Batsuit to his son’s birthday party, was “worth every moment of suffering on Justice League.”Read more

CDC director says US may see ‘precipitous decline’ in omicron cases like South Africa (ABC)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said Friday there is a good chance that the U.S. will follow the “ice-pick”-shaped curve of South Africa’s omicron surge of the COVID variant, but cautioned that it could roll through different parts of the country at various times, as previous waves have.
“I do think in places that we are seeing this really steep incline, that we may well see also a precipitous decline, but we’re also a much bigger country than South Africa,” Walensky said in a briefing with reporters.
“And so it may very well be that we see this ice-pick shape, but that is it travels across the country,” she said.
As far as the rapid spread of coronavirus cases contributing to that decline, Walensky said there was not yet conclusive data to say for sure that people who recovered from omicron would be protected against reinfection. The CDC is setting up studies to find out more, Walensky said.Read more
