Excerpt from Chapter 1 (1993)
His mum was not in the parlour. She was not in her room either. No one divulged anything to him. Even his chatty aunty revealed nothing. They all looked at him with eyes filled with pity and kept quiet whenever he was within earshot of their conversations. It knocked him off like an onrushing vehicle, his father was nowhere to be found. His father was supposed to be in the parlour, but wasn’t. A brief glance through the room revealed his mother, walking through the garden, her fingers running through the flower beds imitating his father. There were two older women with her, but his father was not with her.
