Donald Trump’s claim that Islamic State has been defeated has been rejected by the UK and his own political allies.
Yesterday the US leader suddenly declared victory over the extremist group and vowed to pull all 2,000 US troops out of Syria.
This contradicts his own experts’ assessments and sparked surprise and outrage from members of his party, who called his action rash and dangerous.
UK defence minister Tobias Ellwood said the threat posed by Islamic extremism in the Middle East was ‘very much alive.’
The UK has formed part of the US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against IS, also known as Isis, in Syria. Read more
