Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas of “blackmail” and says the Israeli cabinet will not meet to approve the ceasefire deal until the group agrees to all details. Meanwhile, Israel has continued to bombard Gaza, with medics saying dozens have been killed.
Why are some Israelis protesting against a ceasefire?
International correspondent Alex Rossi explains why some Israelis are protesting the ceasefire deal:
“Within Israel it is a divisive issue whether or not to bring about this ceasefire,” he says.
“I think to understand what you’re seeing happening in Jerusalem with that anti-ceasefire rally, you need to roll back to 7 October and understand the psychological impact that the Hamas attack had on this country.”
Rossi says there are many people “who actually think the job isn’t finished yet”.
He notes that Hamas has not been entirely obliterated, which means – in the protesters’ eyes – the war should continue.
“How divided Israeli society is is difficult to say. Certainly there is a huge body of pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to bring about a conclusion to this war, which has raged now for many months and seen huge destruction across Gaza,” he says. (Skynews)
