Detectives on Tuesday grilled the founder and Senior Pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, Biodun Fatoyinbo, for over eight hours in connection with the rape allegations levelled against him by a photographer, Busola Dakolo. The cleric had allegedly raped Dakolo when she was a teenager at her parents’ residence in Ilorin, Kwara State. The National Examination Council on Tuesday recommended the de-recognition of three schools in Katsina, Kebbi and Oyo states for two years, for their involvement in mass cheating during the examinations. A near-total ban on taking baby African elephants from the wild and selling them to zoos has been approved at a meeting in Geneva. Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) decided to tighten the rules after days of debate. US judge blocks Missouri’s eight-week abortion ban (BBC)
A US federal judge has temporarily blocked Missouri from enforcing a law banning nearly all abortions in the state after eight weeks of pregnancy. The law was set to take effect on Wednesday. It would ban abortions after eight weeks except in cases of medical emergency. US District Judge Howard Sachs said it was not to be enforced, “pending litigation or further order of the court”. A 16 year-old boy murdered his single father after being asked to tidy up his bedroom, police say. Jeffrey Dale Wanca reportedly shot his father Chad Wanca, 43, dead and also struck his 12 year-old brother Hunter with another bullet. The horrific incident happened at the Wanca family home in Toney, Alabama, on Saturday, with Hunter in a critical condition at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Read more

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has filed criminal charges against a former senior engineer at Google’s owner Alphabet alleging he stole car technology secrets. Anthony Levandowski was charged with 33 counts of trade theft involving Alphabet’s self-driving car technology. He had left Alphabet’s Waymo unit in 2016 and eventually ran Uber’s self-driving car project, only to be fired. Read more

A British composer, an acclaimed musician and their baby have died in a plane crash in Switzerland. Meek Mill pleads guilty to gun charge to end 12-year case (BBC)
Meek Mill has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour gun charge, in a plea deal which ends a 12-year long case. The US rapper was granted a new trial in July because judges ruled that his original trial in 2008 had credibility issues with the arresting officer. The judge in the new trial decided the two years Meek Mill had already spent in prison was enough. “I know this has been a long road for you and hopefully this will be the end of it,” said Judge Leon Tucker.
